A suburban Atlanta police officer resigned after his department said he used foul language and inappropriate tactics during the arrest of a 65-year-old grandmother during a traffic stop, recorded on a police dashboard camera.Alpharetta Officer James Legg had been called in as backup during a May 4 traffic stop because the Lyft driver would not sign a ticket and refused another officer's order to get out of her car, officials said.In a letter to Alpharetta Public Safety Director John Robison released Friday, Legg said he felt he behaved appropriately and followed his training."I judged her actions to be passive resistance and used very limited force to end a multiple minute encounter with the suspect," he said. It’s when family members in different houses or close friends agree to socialize in person, but only with each other to limit the risk of infection.“So, when you join a bubble, you're taking on additional risk and the amount of risk you're taking on is that difference between you and the person with the highest risk in the group,” said Cyrus Shahpar, an epidemiologist with Resolve to Save Lives. “So, it’s important to be vigilant and trust those in the bubble.”Part of a support bubble agreement is that everyone practices the same things outside the bubble, including not forming other bubbles. You should also agree to how long the bubble will last. Obviously, the less people, the lower the risk.It’s also a good strategy for families that need help with things like childcare or taking care of an aging relative.Even professional sports teams and other businesses are somewhat following this theory, setting up things like safe hotels and doing things like testing anyone that comes in.“Then, you tell them they can’t leave the place and inside have to be careful about interaction, then you could theoretically say that’s a safer place than outside the hotel,” said Shahpar.Support bubbles could also help limit virus spread even if someone inside the group were to get the virus, because you already know who the close contacts are.“As we navigate through uncharted waters, we don’t know what’s going to happen. We don’t know how long it’s going to last. So, if this helps us maintain our sanity throughout this pandemic, I think it’s a good idea,” said Shahpar.Other countries and some U.S. counties using the support bubble model are seeing success in lowering cases. 1861

A mother is grieving the loss of her teenage son, who was stabbed to death Monday morning in Palm Beach Gardens.Jovanni Sierra celebrated his birthday a day early. First, he and his friends played paintball and then they had pizza. He was about to turn 13. Sierra's mom, Karen Abreu recorded video of him with his friends, singing "Happy Birthday" to him, eating pizza. “I could just see it, that night he was so happy. I never thought in my wildest dream that I would get the news I got yesterday,” Abreu said.Jovanni went over to stay at his friend, Dane Bancroft’s house. They’ve known each other for years. “I had told him, are you sure baby? I want you to come home. I want to sing happy birthday, give you a hug and a kiss for your birthday tomorrow,” she said. “He’s like mom, 'It’s OK. I’m going to have fun, please, I love you,’ and that’s the last words he said to me."Palm Beach Gardens police say Dane’s older brother had his friend, 17-year-old Corey Johnson, over that night too. Johnson told police he waited until everyone was asleep around 4 a.m. to kill Jovanni, Dane and Dane’s mother, Elaine. Johnson was allegedly inspired by his Muslim faith, and violent jihadist videos, which encourage killing non-believers, he told police. Dane and Elaine were hurt. Jovanni was killed in a brutal knife attack. Karen says any rumors her son made fun of Johnson are wrong. “I don’t feel like my son is one to make fun of anybody. He’s always been accepting of everyone. It disgusts me because that’s not my son,” she said. Johnson was there Sunday night, celebrating Jovanni’s birthday. A steady gust of a late autumn's wind is about the only thing moving quickly in rural corners of this country. But Pamela Curry has learned that the solitude she loves about her home in this remote part of Maryland can come at a price.It was 2017 when the Curry family's home in rural Maryland caught fire. Curry, her husband and kids happened to be on vacation at the time."Everything you worked for, everything you had, was gone," the mother of four said while sitting on the front porch of the home she now lives in.The first firefighters who arrived were from the Denton Volunteer Fire Company, a 10-mile drive from the Curry's home in Caroline County.Todd Berneski was there that night and serves as the department's president."We’re here to provide a service to the community," Berneski said.That service that Curry's and others in rural communities across the country depend on though has been struggling lately. Since COVID-19, this volunteer fire department and others nationwide suddenly lost revenue from yearly fundraisers. Denton Volunteer Fire Company is looking at a ,000 budget shortfall right now.What that means is that volunteer fire agencies nationwide are struggling to keep up with maintenance on equipment. While there are no salaries to pay, it still costs hundreds of thousands of dollars to run these departments.All of it is putting the public at risk."If we show up and pumps don’t work or we don’t have tools, there’s nobody else to call," Berneski said about the constant struggle to keep aging equipment running.Across the country, there are close to 25,000 volunteer fire departments, most of which serve as critical lifelines to rural communities. In Denton, they were able to hold their annual Christmas tree farm fundraiser, but their budget is still off by 25 percent."People want to give. We know they want to give, but if someone can’t afford to give, I don’t want to take a meal off of somebody’s table because they can’t afford it," Berneski added.The National Volunteer Fire Council is worried about the long-term implications the funding gap could create. They've successfully lobbied Congress for millions of dollars in aid for volunteer departments, but the money is held up in the current stimulus bill.The concern is that some agencies may be forced to close if they don't get help."You’re probably not going to know you have a problem until you have a very big problem," said David Finger, who works with the National Volunteer Fire Council.As for Pamela Curry, she knows firsthand how vital these volunteer fire departments are and how critical it is to keep them running."Their equipment has to be running. If their equipment isn’t running and it’s not in good order, we won’t have machines to help us out,” Curry said. 2779

A Manhattan judge ruled on Wednesday that a bar can legally eject and not serve a customer for wearing a hat containing President Donald Trump's campaign slogan "Make America Great Again," the New York Post reported. The judge ruled that there is not a law against political discrimination. In January 2017, Greg Piatek was asked to leave the New York City watering hole The Happiest Hour because he was wearing a "Make America Great Again" hat. Piatek claimed that a bartender told him that they do not serve Trump supporters. According to the New York Post, Piatek claimed in the lawsuit that the incident “offended his sense of being American.”Piatek's attorney argued that his client wore the hat to pay tribute to victims of the September 11, 2001 attacks. Piatek claimed he visited the 9/11 Memorial before going ot the bar. “The purpose of the hat is that he wore it because he was visiting the 9/11 Memorial,” Piatek's attorney Paul Liggieri said, according to the Post.   Attorneys for The Happiest Hour claimed that political beliefs are not a protected class. While Liggieri claimed that honoring the 9/11 victims was part of his spiritual beliefs, Judge David Cohen ruled that the hat is not faith-based.  1340
