CLEVELAND, Ohio — People taking care of elderly loved ones who receive Social Security benefits may not know to what they are entitled."This money belongs to us...the social security recipient,” said Don Wright, who is nothing if not passionate about his mission now to help others.“It’s our money!” he said.Reporters with E.W. Scripps television station WEWS in Cleveland, asked Wright: “Do you think many people know about this?”“No. No. That is sad,” he replied.Wright is from Akron, Ohio. He was married to a woman for 16 years. They divorced and later she passed away.In 2009, Wright said he filed for his Social Security benefits, talking with a staff member at the Akron office."He said this famous statement. ‘Well, who do you want to collect your benefits from?’” Wright said. The man offered him either his own benefits or his ex-wife's benefits."What he should have said was 'Well, you know you're entitled to collect your survivor widower's benefits first,’" Wright said.It wasn't until 2016 when some friends told Wright to look into the survivor benefits."Social security, I found out in my investigation, does not willfully just hand out a bunch of information for you to know," Wright said.He told us from that first meeting with the Akron office in 2009 until 2016, he was entitled to 7 to 8 years of the survivor benefits and more. However, after fighting for that money, he got a message from an attorney's office on his answering machine saying he might get six months to a year of benefits."The average person would think Social Security said, 'You're done! There's no way in the world you can get anything else.’ Well, that's not true,” Wright said.Reporters at WEWS found in the social security Code of Federal Regulations, there's an admission that agents "may have given you misinformation about your eligibility for such benefits ... Which caused you not to file an application at that time." It even gives examples that are similar to Wright’s claims."You don't always get that correct answer right off (the bat),” said Marcia Margolius, who is an attorney and a social security law expert. She works in Cleveland."We have to encourage people continuously to persevere, to follow up on their rights,” Margolius said.Marcia said she's experienced plenty of social security roadblocks."It's a weeding out sort-of a policy where social security may take the attitude of, if you're serious and if your claim is legitimate, you're going to keep going," she said."Is it a strategy by social security?” a WEWS reporter asked.“I wouldn't go that far…but I have seen it a lot,” Margolius said.Wright said another hurdle was when social security gave him a list of lawyers to help him through the process. He wrote letters to those attorneys only to have many returned to sender. We saw the envelopes marked “no such number,” “address vacant” and “not deliverable.”"And I kept getting all these dead ends and nobody to help me,” Wright said.WEWS investigative reporters contacted the Social Security Administration. A representative said if Wright signed a consent form, then the rep could talk to us about his case. Wright did that. However, later the rep "respectfully declined" an interview. Here’s the full statement sent to WEWS reporters: 3283

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — Rapper Kanye West used part of his first event since declaring himself a presidential candidate to rant against historical figure Harriet Tubman. West said the Underground Railroad conductor “never actually freed the slaves, she just had them work for other white people." West's comments drew shouts of opposition from some in the crowd gathered Sunday in North Charleston, South Carolina. His appearance was marked by a lengthy monologue touching on topics from abortion and religion to international trade and licensing deals. Whether West is actually seeking the nation’s highest office remains a question. 640

CORONADO (KGTV) - The 200 million dollar project is being called the "Reimagination" of the Hotel del Coronado. The plans have been in the works for almost 20 years according to Coronado resident Felicia Bell, "17 years ago in 2002 when it was first presented to our community and the California Coastal Commission". Bell tells 10News the Hotel del holds a special place in everyone's heart, "my two daughters were married there".The beachfront resort just celebrated its 130th anniversary. The history makes it much more than a resort to the community, "this represents our history here in Coronado this is the key to the rest of the whole island" Kitt Walker tells 10News. Walker and her husband have lived in Coronado for years and say it's a staple piece for the community, "if it hadn’t been for the hotel del, Coronado wouldn’t even be here to speak of". In fact, Richard Walker gave walking tours of the resort for years. They both have ties close to the resort. They're looking forward to the repairs in order to preserve the resort for many more years to come. The first phase of the project includes the first of two underground parking structures. The entire project also includes adding 142 new guest rooms, a new Conference Center and repairs to the roof. The entire project is expected to be complete by the end of 2021. Bell tells 10News the construction could cause some headaches but they'll be worth it, "which will be noisy dusty dirty incovienent but at the end I think it will be a beautiful project". Many in the community say it's well overdue and a small price to pay to keep the Hotel del around for another 100 years, "if it hadn’t been for the Hotel del, Coronado wouldn’t even be here to speak of" Walker tells 10News. 1755

CLEVELAND — Who’s been at a store buying holiday gifts and then the cashier asks, “do you want to sign up for our credit card today?” They might offer a discount or something else, but should you sign on the dotted line?“They make it easy. They really make it easy,” Leanne Smith said.Smith is from Solon and knows how stores can tempt you with their credit cards, but she’s sticking to her Target Red Card for now.“I don’t think it’s a responsible thing for me to have one at every store,” she said.Tedd Rossman from CreditCards.com said that if you ever plan on carrying a balance, store cards aren’t going to be the best option for you.“While sometimes these store cards can work for you, most of the time, they’re not the most consumer-friendly option,” Rossman said. That’s because Rossman says the average store credit card has an interest rate of 25%, some as high as 29.99% such as Discount Tire, Big Lots and jewelry store cards like Kay Jewelers.“These cards are not as selective about credit quality, which is why the retailers and their bank partners say they have to charge such high-interest rates,” Rossman said.CreditCardInsider.com recently rated various popular store cards based on various things like interest rates. Here are those results:Target - 24.4%Old navy - almost 26% (25.99%)Walmart - roughly 18-27% (17.99%-26.99%) interestNathan Grant from CreditCardInsider.com said you shouldn’t just sign-up at the checkout on a whim even if there’s a discount offered or cashback incentives.“The percentage of interest you’re paying might end up calculating to be more than what you got from spending on the cards,” Grant said.According to Grant, some of the better retailer cards are:Amazon prime cards with lower interest rates—5% back on Amazon purchases and gift cards when you sign up. Target—higher interest rate, but 5% back. And the only one rated excellent is Costco’s card, which has a 15% rate and various cash back options and good rewards on gas purchases. But keep this in mind: In a survey of nearly 3,000 shoppers nationwide, more than 40% said they regretted signing up for a retail credit card. Plus, one out of five in the survey said they carried a balance from the last holiday season, and more than 50% said they’ve paid interest on a retail store card.“That’s kind of like a wake-up call even to myself to be like I got to make sure that I’m always smartly shopping if I’m using credit cards,” Grant said. For Smith, she said she’s only carried a balance a couple of times in the past 20 years because she knows “if you can’t pay it, you really shouldn’t buy it just because you have a credit card.”Retail credit cards can give you benefits especially if you’re loyal to the business. It could help you build credit, but you’ll want to pay off your balances every month and spend responsibly. And another thing to watch out for is deferred interest. Even if you owe just one dollar by the time the term ends, you could end up paying interest on the entire amount you initially financed. This story originally reported by Jonathan Walsh on News5Cleveland.com 3102
