SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — After getting approved by voters, San Diego State is moving forward with its SDSU Mission Valley Plan. As they are still working out the finishing touches, community members are offering their suggestions to organizers. SDSU Mission Valley still calls for a stadium, housing for students and the public, retail space, offices and a river park. Local land use and design professionals met in Balboa Park this morning to offer their ideas on how to enhance and improve the existing plans."They want to make sure that this very large development... isn't like an island in the middle of Mission Valley," says Cary Lowe, with C3 San Diego. Community members want to ensure the project "connects fluidly with the surrounding community."There are other concerns, as well. Once construction begins, crews may have to remediate a gas plume that once sat under the site."A number of people have raised the issue of the subsurface contamination of the site," says Lowe. This has "been a long time issue because of a leak from fuel tanks in Murphy Canyon."Lowe says there is an elaborate plan for the possible contamination removal. But as negotiations continue, it is unclear if the city or university will be paying for it. Land use and design professionals estimate the project to begin towards the beginning of next year. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A San Diego Unified School Board Trustee is moving forward with a possible settlement over accusations of date-rape and other sexual advances.Kevin Beiser is facing accusations of date-rape, groping, and other sexual advances, brought forth by four men, including his former political consultant and former campaign manager. Beiser has denied all allegations since they surfaced in March.The settlement could indicate a preference to not allow a jury to decide whether Beiser is innocent of the accusations, according to political analyst John Dadian."The oldest rule in the book is if you go to trial, even if you are innocent, you never know what jury is going to do. That's exactly why people do settle," Dadian said.The victims' attorney told 10News he could not comment on the case to the media as part of the agreement. In March, Beiser was placed on leave from his teaching position in Chula Vista. The San Diego County Democratic Party has asked for Beiser to resign from the school board.Despite the scandal, Beiser has announced that he will be running for San Diego City Council next year as well. 1135

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — An El Cajon mother is searching for clues after her teenage son was brutally beaten and mugged in the East Village.Two Tuesdays ago, Sarah Swift-Farrow got the call every mother dreads. Her 19-year-old son, Titan Mellor, was in the ER and hurt badly."My heart dropped ... just a hopeless feeling," said Swift-Farrow.She believes around 2 p.m., her son, a Grossmont College student, was headed to the Family Health Centers clinic in the East Village, applying for some sort of state assistance, when it happened. Swift-Farrow learned details from the paramedics' report."He was attacked from behind by a group of people, hit in the back of the head with a glass bottle. He fell to the ground, was repeatedly punched, and lost consciousness. Then he was kicked in the face for an unknown duration of time," said Swift-Farrow.Swift-Farrow says the attackers took his keys, phone, and wallet, charging thousands of dollars in purchases on his credit cards during the next few days. As for Mellor, he suffered a concussion and a host of severe injuries."Multiple fractures in his eye socket, his nose, above the mouth, behind his ear and in the back of his head," said Swift-Farrow.She says his road to recovery won't be an easy one. His memory of the attack remains hazy."He remembers a group of six to eight males yelling at him, and then getting hit from behind," said Swift-Farrow.Swift-Farrow is making a plea for tips to help police fill in the missing details."They need to be caught because my son deserves justice, and I don’t want this to happen to anyone else," said Swift-Farrow.She says the first charge on the stolen credit card was at the nearby MTS stop. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A suspicious package discovered at Naval Air Station North Island forced military investigators to close the base's Main Gate on Monday morning.The closure at base, located on the northside of the Coronado peninsula, created major delays along the Coronado Bridge and into the base."North Island Naval Air Station main gate has been closed, expect delays in the area," the Coronado Police Department tweeted.Officials kept the remaining two gates at the base were left open during the investigation. The Main Gate was reopened just before 9:30 a.m.Details about the package were not available at this time.NAS North Island is the home port of several aircraft carriers of the United States Navy.The incident comes as San Diego County military bases began bolstering security measures amid rising tensions in the Middle East and threats of retaliation against the U.S. after an American drone killed a top Iranian general.Officials have warned that military law enforcement will be checking all identification cards and increasing vehicle inspections prompting entry gate delays."Due to these security measures, travelers will experience longer wait times entering installation," Camp Pendleton officials said on Twitter Monday. 1255

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — After receiving criticism from the Chicano Federation, UCSD Health officials met with the group Friday to review plans to recruit volunteers for a COVID-19 vaccine clinical trial.The Chicano Federations sent the following statement Thursday after hearing about UCSD’s plans to enroll approximately 1,600 volunteers to participate in the AstraZeneca COVIS-19 Phase 3 clinical trial:“Once again, the burden of COVID-19 is falling on communities of color. It is unfair that underserved communities who have the least access to information are now being targeted to participate in an experimental vaccine. This tactic, unfortunately, does not come as a surprise given that this country has a history of using people of color for experimental medical treatments. The two sides are now working together on solutions to any concerns.“Part of the confusion is there are multiple clinical trials happening at the same time,” said Maldonado. “A lot of these clinical trials are happening in communities where there is a lack of communication. We did meet with UC San Diego, and we are going to be working with them in making sure that our community receives the education around these clinical trials.”Maldonado said community outreach would ensure that volunteers have all of the information necessary to make informed decisions.“When outreach is done in a way that is respectful to the community that different then some of the other approaches that other clinical trials are taking,” she said.UCSD made it clear that this trial is entirely voluntary, and consent forms will be available in English and Spanish.“I would just encourage anyone who has any questions or who might also be confused about the different trials and what’s going on, to contact the community-based organization that they know and trust to get some more information,” said Maldonado.The trial is expected to begin on Sept. 8.
