POWAY, Calif. (KGTV) - Poway Unified School District is launching a pilot program in an attempt to take an innovative approach to special education, bringing children with learning disabilties together with the general education population."We know, as students of history, separate has never been equal," Associate Superintendent Greg Mizel said in an interview with 10News. "So the more that we mix up our kids, the better for all children."The program is being tried in three schools: Monterey Ridge Elementary in 4S Ranch, Twin Peaks Middle in Poway, and Mt. Carmel in Rancho Pe?asquitos. All students who are in the special education program will have regular classes with students from the general education population. Those classes will have two teachers, one from special ed and one from general ed. That means all children will have more academic support, while there always be someone trained to give the special needs students the additional care they need.Thus far, teachers and administrators say the program has been a big success, with special education students thriving on the increased socialization and higher academic standards, and the general education students getting additional attention in the classroom and the chance to increase empathy working with differently abled students.Staff at seven other PUSD schools are currently going through training in anticipation of the program being expanded next school year. 1448

This is the third vacancy while Trump has been president.Trump’s announcement Saturday is eight days after the death of Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg. Trump reflected on Ginsburg's passing, saying the country “mourned the loss of a true American legend. She was a legal giant and a pioneer for women.”Barrett also spoke about Ginsburg and her legacy for women in the legal profession and all Americans. She clerked for Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia in 1998 and 1999. Scalia and Ginsburg had a close friendship, despite their strong legal disagreements. He called Barrett a "woman of unparalleled achievement” and "very eminently qualified for the job."Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell says the Senate will vote "in the weeks ahead" on Barrett's nomination, according to the Associated Press. Meanwhile, former vice president and Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden released a statement Saturday calling on senators to wait until after the election to vote on the nomination of a new Supreme Court justice. (KGTV) — San Diego Sheriff's deputies Saturday were investigating a homicide at a North County apartment complex.Sheriff's deputies responded to the Sofi apartment complex on Midland Rd. at about 1:45 a.m., deputies said.Early Saturday morning, the San Diego Sheriff's Department received a call from Pomerado Hospital in Poway of a man who was brought in with a gunshot wound. Just after 3:00 a.m, Michael Walker died at the hospital.10News spoke to a neighbor, Christine Zobel. She was woken up at around 1:45 am after hearing commotion upstairs. "There was an altercation in the apartment on top of my children's room, and there was a gunshot that went through the wall and killed a man that was sleeping," Zobel said. Minutes after the shooting, Zobel saw Walker's wife drive him to the hospital. But he did not make it. "That could've gone through the floor and into my kids' room, or anybody around us could've been affected from this reckless event," Zobel said. Saturday afternoon, Sheriff's Homicide detectives arrested Manuula Save for murder. The investigation is ongoing. (KGTV) - Students in Poway are trading their notebooks and pencils for needles and thread, as they make teddy bears this holiday season."This is hands on," says 5th Grade teacher Kimberlee Rizzuti. "They're making something. Some of these kids have never held a needle and thread."The 5th Graders at Painted Rock Elementary School do every part of the bear-building by hand, from drawing and cutting patterns to stuffing the bears. Parents help with the sewing machines in class."It's pretty hard, but it's fun to do," says 5th Grader Deacon Tilley.It's a project the school has done for about 35 years. The classes make about 100 bears total, all of which get donated to Interfaith Services of Escondido."We've kind of gotten away from hand made things," says Rizzuti. "This is more of a gift from the heart.""It makes me feel happy because some people don't get a lot of things for Christmas," says 5th Grader Bella Lesagonicz.
