SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A Carmel Valley family who moved from Parkland, Florida is upset after learning two Parkland victims died of apparent suicides.Erin George says these suicides in her hometown are re-opening old wounds. It has her wondering how many more lives will be lost due to the senseless tragedy. She said, “I was numb. I just thought when does the loss of life stop from this.”Erin’s daughter Lauren lost a friend in the shootings. She worries about the emotional impact the shootings will have on her daughter.Suicide prevention experts say the best thing you can do is look for warning signs and talk to your teenagers. Simply ask them if they have thought about suicide. They say the best time to talk about it is when they are not depressed. Warning signs include a drastic change in behavior or withdrawing. SAN DIEGO (KGTV and CNS) -- A San Diego County deputy facing charges that he groped 13 women was arrested again Thursday on five new charges, including forcible oral copulation.Richard Fischer, 32, is being held on million bail and is scheduled to be arraigned Friday morning in a Vista courtroom.Fischer faces more than 10 years if convicted on the new charges, according to the District Attorney. Fischer is already facing 14 years and eight months behind bars if convicted on previously filed charges.RELATED: San Diego deputy accused by multiple women of sexual assault speaks publiclyIn July, Fischer, accompanied by his attorney, spoke out for the first time about the accusations."These charges are simply untrue. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A Del Mar woman wants lifeguards to put more signage up on Dog Beach that warns of riptides after her dog was dragged out to sea."As the tide goes up it fills up and as the tide goes out it flows out," Deputy Lifeguard Chief Lifeguard Mark Rathsam said, describing the movement of water between the San Dieguito Lagoon and the ocean."If you get caught in that you're gone," said Mark Waters, a long-time surfer and volunteer surf club coach at Westview High School.On Wednesday, Joanne Goss took her 4-year-old Dachshund Hank and her rescued chocolate Labrador to the beach. A large dog started playing with her Lab as they were walking toward the ocean, steering clear of the fast flowing river below.The owner of the big dog tried to get his dog's attention. "When he threw the ball, the Mastiff ran, the Lab ran and Hank ran," Goss said choking up. Hank was ripped out to sea with the current.Goss sprinted into the water, soaking her fanny pack with her phone inside. Waters saw the danger and took off."Threw off all my clothes except my shorts and just ran," he said.He swam out into the fog hoping to find the dog, and hoping he wouldn't be too late."I thought I saw him get rolled over in a wave and then I heard the sound of a drowning animal," he paused, "that just pierced right into my bones and I was just like, 'Oh my god, I've got to hurry."Swimming faster, he finally reached Hank."He was the happiest dog on the planet when that happened. He jumped up on my chest and he's up in my arms, so I kept him on my chest," Waters said.Hank was so excited he scratched Waters making him bleed. Waters said he knew the "big fish" like sharks wouldn't be in the area for an hour or so, and then he started to look around to get oriented. "I look back there's no shore, I looked in all directions, you can't see anything," said Waters.He stayed calm and laid on his back, holding Hank out of the water. He said he looked at his watch and knowing the tide, he would ride it back in in the next couple hours.Back on the beach, Goss felt sick to her stomach. "We lost sight of Mark, and I thought Mark had died," Goss said.She said she felt responsible.A friend of Waters called lifeguards. The friend comforted Goss, reassuring her Waters would be OK. Finally, they saw the rescue team return with Waters and Hank.Goss was overjoyed. She and Waters said they want more signage posted warning the public, especially visitors, of the dangers of the river.10News asked lifeguards what could be done. They said there's eight signs posted north of the river and two on the south side. Rathsam explained they don't want to post "so much that people ignore it, because that's what ends up happening, and not so little that people can't see it. So we strategically place it where it's the most visible."He also said with the huge change in the tide, it's nearly impossible to put more signage up without moving it by hand every few hours.Waters and Goss hope that by at least telling their story, they can get the word out, so their close call prevents a tragedy."It really made me feel good to save the dog, it really did and um it was probably one of the best things I've done in a long time," Waters said.Goss said she will be buying Hank a life jacket. 3279

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A 19-year-old Arizona student has been arrested and now faces animal cruelty charges after police say he abused his emotional support dog.Netzer Villagomez, a student at Grand Canyon University, was arrested Sept. 22 after an Arizona Humane Society Animal Cruelty Investigator responded to reports of animal abuse involving a pug named Miso, an emotional support dog.Miso was examined by an AHS veterinarian, who said she found two fractured ribs, a fractured pelvis, and fractured tooth. Blood work also revealed elevated liver values indicating acute injuries.Police said Villagomez admitted to hanging Miso by its collar and leash, with all four legs off the ground, on two occasions for several seconds each time. Police say he also admitted to harming the dog on purpose.Villagomez sent photos of the reported abuse to another person, police added.Villagomez has been charged with Animal Cruelty, which went from a Class 6 to Class 5 Felony in Arizona last August. This means that such crimes cannot be dropped to a misdemeanor and may included jail time or supervised probation or treatment, according to the law. He's the first person to be arrested under the new penalties.Grand Canyon University released a statement to 10News, saying Villagomez had been expelled following his arrest."GCU Public Safety became aware of an incident involving Netzer Villagomez and immediately took possession of his emotional support animal to ensure its safety. The animal was turned over to the Arizona Humane Society and Mr. Villagomez was removed from campus. Mr. Villagomez has since been expelled from the university following his arrest by the Phoenix Police Department. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A flying eye hospital is bringing medical care to countries in need. One of the doctors who boarded the Orbis International plane in November is from San Diego.“Orbis International is a unique nonprofit focused on training eye surgeons around the world in advanced techniques of surgery," said Dr. Srini Iyengar, an Encinitas-based Oculoplastic Surgeon who volunteers for Orbis. The ultimate goal is to reduce blindness in countries with inadequate access to care.“In the world, preventable blindness is something that is a big concern, not only for the individual but also populations. Every blind person takes two people out of the workforce, not just them, but also someone who is caring for them," said Dr. Iyengar.The nonprofit just returned from Ghana, where 4 out of 5 people are blind from preventable causes. The plane has an operating room in front and a classroom in the back. “Local doctors, they come to the airplane, and they sit in the front seats and watch on the screen what’s going on in the back, and so they’re watching live surgery being performed," said Dr. Iyengar. The local doctors can then train more eye professionals in their country, helping people long after the plane takes off. Dr. Iyengar says both kids and adults receive care. For many patients, it's the first time they've seen a plane. Orbis International relies on volunteers and private donations.FedEx donated the plane. 1437
