BALTIMORE — Romance scams have nearly doubled this year, according to the FBI. The holidays coupled with the pandemic have many people feeling lonely. Dating sites help singles connect, but it's not always who you think it is.A Montgomery County man thought he was in a relationship with a woman named Brandy Bowens, instead, he lost ,000 in a romance scam. "It’s like there are claws in you that you can't seem to get out," he said.He didn't want to be identified but wants to warn others about how his five-year relationship ended in financial ruin."It's hard. I lost the money and it messed up everything in a financial way for me, trying to build my credit back, just so much that that has screwed up for me," he said. His better judgment took a back seat when he was asked to be the go-between for the woman's art business. The FBI later informed him that he was involved in a money-laundering operation."That's a huge problem and continues to be a problem," said Supervisory Special Agent Keith Custer with the FBI Baltimore field office.Custer estimates that romance scams are up 30 to 50 percent. It's also one of the highest dollar value scams, and victims rarely get their money back.Custer is warning anyone with an online dating profile to research the person's photo and profile. Start by doing a reverse google image search, and look for scammers to make up excuses on why they can't meet in-person or video chat."Saying my phone is broke or my camera doesn’t work," the Montgomery County man said. And never send money to anyone you don't know personally."More people are being isolated and are online looking for companionship, so naturally that fraud and those scams are going to continue," said Custer. If you think you might be a victim of a romance scam, contact your local FBI office or file a report online. This story was first reported by Mallory Sofastaii at WMAR in Baltimore, Maryland. 1920

Authorities in India have decided to hold off retrieving the body of the American national feared killed on North Sentinel Island amid concerns about a possible confrontation with the tribe that lives there.John Allen Chau is believed to have been killed by Sentinelese tribespeople after he visited their island home in the Andaman and Nicobar archipelago in November, breaching local laws strictly prohibiting contact with the isolated people.Indian police say Chau found local fishermen who agreed to take him near the island, before using a canoe the rest of the way. Days later, the fishermen -- who have since been arrested for facilitating his trip -- say they saw the tribespeople dragging his body around the island."We want to avoid direct confrontation with the tribespeople," Dependra Pathak, director general of police of the Andaman and Nicobar islands, told CNN when asked about the latest efforts to retrieve Chau's body. "We do not want to go there and create an unhappy situation."The decision to avoid a direct confrontation with the isolated tribe came after a series of meetings and reconnaissance trips made by the officials. Anthropologists and tribal experts were also consulted.By Sunday, authorities had mapped out the area with the help of the fishermen and observed several members of the tribe walking around the area where eyewitnesses claim to have seen Chau's body dragged and buried. However, despite ruling out any immediate attempts to land on the island, local police would not categorically rule out retrieving the body at a future date. "We are working on it. We'll firm up a plan very soon," said Pathak. 1650

ATLANTA, Ga. – A top official with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said Wednesday that experts are seeing a “distressing trend” as coronavirus cases surge across the United States, particularly in the Midwest.“Unfortunately, we're seeing a distressing trend here in the United States,” said Dr. Jay Butler, Deputy Director for Infectious Diseases. “Smaller, more intimate gatherings of family, friends and neighbors may be driving transmission as well, especially as they move indoors.”Butler also urged Americans to continue taking the necessary precautions to prevent the spread of the coronavirus, like practicing social distancing, washing your hands and wearing masks.“I recognize we are all getting tired of the impact that COVID-19 has had on our lives, we get tired of wearing masks, but it continues to be as important as it’s ever been and I’d say it’s more important than ever as we move into the fall season.”Butler made the comments during a press briefing with CDC Director Dr. Robert Redfield and Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Alex Azar.CDC, HHS give an update on COVID-19 response https://t.co/YxLSMGZgbs— Reuters Science News (@ReutersScience) October 21, 2020 During the briefing, Azar and Redfield discussed Operation Warp Speed, a partnership initiated by the Trump administration to accelerate the testing, supply, development and distribution COVID-19 vaccines, therapeutics and diagnostics. The goal of partnership is to produce and deliver 300 million doses of a safe and effective vaccine with initial doses available by January 2021, according to the HHS website.Azar provided an updated timeline on when we can expect vaccine to be distributed and who will receive the first doses. According to him, a vaccine would be widely available by late March or early April.“We expect that we would have by the end of this year, enough vaccine that is FDA authorized, to be able to vaccinate all of our vulnerable, the most vulnerable individuals,” said Azar. “Then by the end of January, we expect we’ll have enough to vaccinate all seniors as well as our health care workers and first responders. And by the end of March to early April, enough vaccine for all Americans who would want to take a vaccine.”Wednesday’s briefing comes as many states report increases in the number of COVID-19 cases. The U.S. has surpassed 8.3 million cases and more than 221,500 people have died across the nation from the disease, according to an ongoing tally by Johns Hopkins University.Experts are concerned there may be a major spike in cases during the fall and winter months, which will strain the country's health care system, which will also be caring for flu patients. With many people still struggling amid the pandemic, Congress and the Trump administration still have not come to a deal on another COVID-19 relief bill. As for the Senate, Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has signaled his chamber may not support the potential deal. 2983
