SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The holiday shopping season is here and you probably have a long list of presents to buy that will set you back hundreds, even thousands of dollars. But you might think twice about overspending on Black Friday or Cyber Monday when you take a closer look at the FIRE movement to help you make it in San Diego. Amon Browning and his wife Christina were recently featured on ABC News. The San Francisco couple just retired, and they’re only 40 years old. “I was making ,000 a year, and Christina was making about ,000 a year,” says Amon Browning. In just eight years, they managed to save million by investing 70 percent of their income through a method called FIRE, which is short for Financial Independence, Retire Early. Mah is the Community Liaison for a local FIRE Chapter in San Diego called Choose FI, as in Financial Independence. They gathered to learn what it takes, mostly significant financial sacrifices, to retire early. “The American Dream is getting a college degree, and this job, and this white picket fence. But all of that has this huge debt behind it,” claims a woman interviewed for the documentary.The goal of the film is to get people thinking about where they spend their money. “The consumerism culture is harmful. It really hurts people,” says another man as video of a massive Black Friday rush appears on the big screen.Ultimately, the documentary portrays how consumerism and marketing place so many Americans on the edge of bankruptcy. “We are spending money we don’t have to buy things we don’t need to impress people we don’t know,” says another man in the documentary in an ominous tone. Nearly half, 44 percent, have credit card debt, and only 38 percent have an emergency fund. Those in the Choose FI community are the opposite. “People in the FI Community have a savings rates upwards of 40 percent,” says Mah. Meaning nearly half of their income is going into savings. Everyone in the movement is different in their quest to save and retire early; there’s no one specific way to do it. “Some things that most people cut: really expensive cable, really expensive phone bills, streaming services,” adds Mah. For others, it’s more drastic, like downsizing a house or giving up an expensive car for a used one. Everything is always going to be out of your control.”“Even if I don’t reach financial independence, retire early, I think I will be better for trying than not to try at all,” says Mah. The FIRE movement takes a great deal of sacrifice. To be successful like the Brownings, you must reduce spending, pay off your debts, and maximize your savings by setting aside 40 to 60 percent of your income. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The former home of San Diego Padres icon Tony Gwynn has finally found a buyer."Mr. Padre's" Poway home, that had since been foreclosed, was sold on Dec. 13 for ,429,500, according to Realtor.com. The two-acre residence was placed on the auction block in June starting at .2 million. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The beloved founder of the popular Roberto's Taco Shop chain which began in San Diego died last week, according to the company.Dolores Robledo, 90, died on July 14, the company said in a release. Robledo opened the first Roberto's Taco Shop — and San Diego's first taco shop — with her husband, Roberto, in 1964, according to the company. Prior to that, the couple started their food career providing tortillas to stores and restaurants from their San Ysidro tortilla factory."Since then, Sra. Dolores had been sharing her love for family and authenticity through each meal served," the company said in a release. "She has left the legacy of her love and perseverance. The way she touched lives will remain ongoing. Dolores Robledo will be deeply missed. Please keep her family in your thoughts as they go through this difficult time."Robledo was the mother to 13 children and had 39 grandchildren, 50 great-grandchildren, and 5 great-great-grandchildren. In 1990, Roberto moved to Las Vegas and soon after decided to open his first taco shop in Las Vegas. With the help of her family, Roberto's expanded to 60 locations across California and Nevada.The Roberto's chain is believed to have started the variety of other eateries with the "berto's" suffix in San Diego. It's long-rumored that the famed California Burrito was created at one of these "berto's" shops, but which shop can claim that title continues to be debated.On Instagram, the company continued: "Sra. Dolores Robledo, founder of Roberto's Taco Shop, loved cooking good Mexican food for her family and friends. She and her family expressed that passion by opening their first Roberto's Taco Shop in San Diego in 1964. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The California Department of Motor Vehicles announced new safety measures for its offices Thursday as the coronavirus pandemic continues across the state.Starting Thursday morning, every person who goes to a DMV location will get their temperature checked before they're allowed inside.Previously, only people getting in-car driving tests were subject to temperature checks.A DMV spokesperson told ABC 10News they'll follow CDC guidelines, only letting people inside if their temperature is below 100.4 degrees."We always follow the guidelines that are issued by the CDC," said DMV spokesperson Cynthia Moreno. "So, following their guidelines, we decided that it would be best to start taking the temperature of all of our customers and our employees to make sure that we follow the safety protocols."The temperature screening is in addition to safety measures already in place, which include mask requirements, social distancing, limited services available and hand-washing and sanitizing stations located throughout each field office.Because of all that, DMV officials say it's best to do as much as you can on the agency's website and avoid coming into the offices, if possible."We want to make sure the people who come to our offices feel safe," said Moreno.
