(KGTV) - Southwest Airlines announced plans to begin offering flights to four Hawaiian airports later this year. The airlines will begin selling tickets sometime in 2018 for flights to Honolulu International Airport, Lihue Airport, Kona International Airport at Keahole, and Kahului Airport.Southwest didn't say when the flights would begin service to the islands, prices for flights, or from which airports flights would depart from on the U.S. mainland.A Hawaii-specific page on Southwest's website has since gone live as well.Southwest is reportedly waiting for federal regulatory approvals as certification is required for flights over long distances of water, multiple outlets reported. Extra pilot training and stringent maintenance and replacement of parts are required for flights making such a trip. The news comes on the heels of the airlines said ticket sales have dipped in the wake of a fatal accident aboard a Southwest flight earlier this month. 991

(KGTV) -- The state’s Department of Motor Vehicles is reopening its remaining field offices that were shut down due to the COVID-19 pandemic.Starting Thursday, June 11, 169 DMV locations across California will reopen for customers that have appointments and provide service for limited transactions that require an in-person visit.DMV field offices were closed in March due to the coronavirus pandemic but select locations around the state began reopening in May with limited service.Although field offices will reopen, many services -- including behind-the-wheel drive tests – are not available for the time being. Officials said behind-the-wheel testing will return in the coming weeks.DMV officials are urging customers to continue “to use its online services, expanded virtual services and other service channels to complete transactions, including eligible driver license and vehicle registration renewals.”Among the limited services being offered at field offices:Paying registration for an impounded vehicle due to registration-related issuesReinstating a suspended or revoked river licensepplying for a reduced-fee or no-fee identification cardProcessing commercial driver license transactionsApplying for a disabled person parking placardsAdding ambulance certificate or firefighter endorsement to a driver licenseVerifying transit training document to drive transit busProcess DMV express customers for REAL ID transactions, if time and space allowVehicle verificationsDMV officials said the department is rescheduling any appointments that were canceled during the closure and notifying customers of new appointment dates. At each field office, employees will be wearing face coverings, practicing physical distancing protocols, and will have access to disinfecting wipes, hand sanitizer, field shields, gloves, and soap and water. All customers will be required to wear a face covering and remain at least six feet apart from others when in line. Officials said, “Customers are offered a text message that will allow them to wait outside the building until notified they are ready to be served. Entry into the building is metered, and customers may experience extended wait times.” 2199

(KGTV) - New details have been released in the moments leading up to a small plane crash in Scottsdale, Ariz., that killed six people this month. The National Transportation Safety Board report said video showed the plane take off from Scottsdale Airport on April 9, its wings "rocking during and shortly after."A traffic camera also recorded the plane in a left bank executing a left turn about half a mile from the airport. (KGTV) -- San Diego nurse Ana Wilkinson spent a month working at New York’s Harlem Hospital during the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic. She returned to San Diego May 21st and returned to work at UCSD Medical Center, just three days later. The transition has not been easy.“A part of me feels guilty leaving my team there. The first day back at UCSD Medical Center I felt lost and I cried.”Wilkinson’s firefighter husband and two young sons understood when she answered the call for help in New York City. She has served on medical missions all over the world but this mission was the most challenging. Her motto is that no patient dies alone.“I became attached to my patients and because their families couldn’t be there, I was there holding their hands when they died.”Wilkinson says her time in New York has made her a better person and a better nurse. 860

(SAN DIEGO, KGTV) -- Ahead of next week's United Nations Climate Summit, 10News is taking a deeper look at the effects of climate change. Since 1900, global sea level has risen 8 inches, dramatically increasing the odds of coastal flooding and damaging floods from storm surge. According to Climate Central, nearly 5 million people live less than 4 feet above high tide across the United States, and scientists expect roughly another 2 to 7 more feet of sea level rise this century.Imperial Beach is one of the most vulnerable in California to sea-level rise as it experiences flooding during periods of extreme high tides and winter swell. 10News looked into a program designed to give people ample warning, called The Resilient Futures program. The goal is to create a flood alert system through a network of instruments to measure local wave and water levels monitored by the Scripps Institution of Oceanography giving scientists and emergency managers a 3 to 4 day head-start to help determine where extreme tides may occur."It is something people are concerned about, and they want to know how often is this likely to occur. As sea levels continue to rise, what’s the change and risk as time goes on.” says Mark Merrifield, the Director of the Coastal Data Information Program at Scripps Institution of Oceanography. He goes on to say, “just like it helps to have a weather forecast if there’s going to be an extreme rain event or wind event coming up. More and more there’s going to be the value of an ocean flooding event.'A bouy is already two miles off the coast of Imperial Beach transmitting data back to scientists and they hope to one day expand the program to other beaches. 1696
