Before arriving for jury duty on Monday, prospective panel members filled out a lengthy questionnaire that might have given them pause."The case for which you are summoned involves the defendant JOAQUIN ARCHIVALDO GUZMAN LOERA, also known as 'El Chapo,' " read query No. 48. "Have you read, seen or heard anything about the defendant, the case, or people involved?"It would be hard not to."In some ways, this case is unprecedented; the amount of public attention has been extraordinary," Brooklyn U.S. District Court Judge Brian Cogan wrote in a recent ruling. That will be a major challenge when jury selection begins on Monday for Mexican cartel boss Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman.Everything is extraordinary in the long-awaited case against a defendant once considered the world's most powerful drug trafficker. The international scope of an alleged criminal enterprise that spanned continents "makes it an outlier among even the biggest drug prosecutions to date," Cogan wrote last week. 993

BRANDON, Fla. -- A Florida woman says someone threw some type of acid on the side of her 2002 Ford Explorer that was parked outside a Kmart in Brandon. Glenda Banfield said she was in the store for about an hour when she came out to find the paint on her car bubbling. "My paint was down to the metal," she said, "I rubbed my hand down over it and it just came off in flakes."Banfield was parked in a disabled parking space in the front row towards the entrance of the store. "I wish I would have just stayed home," said Banfield.Banfield, who lives on disability, is on a fixed-income and took the car in for a repair estimate, "they said it would be at least ,500."  703

BONITA, Calif. (KGTV) — Local officials will break ground on the county's first "bike skills" park at Sweetwater Summit Regional Park Thursday.Officials said the park will feature a bike jump track with four lines for beginners to experts, a kids' pump track, and a skills zone for riders to test themselves."There's a very strong biking community and it really fits right in with what we're trying to do at the County of San Diego to encourage people to live well and thrive," County Supervisor Greg Cox said. BOULDER, Colo. -- Officers across the country are getting backlash after the deaths of George Floyd and others at the hands of law enforcement. One officer wants people know there’s a human behind each badge and says now is a time for everyone to come together."To those of you who don't know me, I’m Vinnie Montez, a third generation Mexican American born in Boulder, Colorado," is how Montez starts his now viral video. In the video Montez, a Patrol Commander for the Boulder County Sheriff's Office, states "for the first time in my life, I’m deeply hurt because I have concluded people don’t think much of law enforcement."Vinnie Montez wears a badge and uniform to work, but he said those symbols don't define or speak for him.The commander with the sheriff's office also happens to be a stand-up comedian. His latest material is more commentary than comedy. His five-minute video has been viewed more than 1.3 million times since June 21."It’s really humbled me to be a voice, to create something from our perspective that is not intended to offend anyone, but just share our perspective and encourage people to get to know local law enforcement," Montez said of the post's meteoric views. That perspective includes the dark parts of the job we often don't see. Montez gets personal in his essay. He alludes to several difficult experiences from his law enforcement career."Do you know what it’s like to give CPR to a 17-year-old kid? To be covered in blood, to do everything you can to save his life but then die?" Montez asks in his video. "To go on those calls and try to remove that pain later on, it’s hard after the course of a career. I’m not the only one."Montez hopes his message will encourage communication from both law enforcement and those who they protect during this time of civil unrest. 1815

BALTIMORE, Maryland — Tommie Tarsell, an experienced insurance agent with 40 plus years in the business, has spent months job hunting.“You would think with all the credentials I have the CIC, CFP LUTC, all these,” said Tarsell. She even owned an agency at one point.“But two years ago, my health failed and I merged with a different agency, which is literally me selling my business,” Tarsell said. She still has bills to pay, so when she was contacted about a job opportunity, she jumped at it.“So up out of the blue came this email to me from Janelle. [It had] GC stationary heading, all that, and they had read my résumé and they felt I was qualified for the position,” Tarsell said.Next steps would be an interview with Patrick Chng over Google Hangouts. Chng apologized for the “unseemly approach” but said it was to stay on top of advancing technologies.Tarsell chatted for two hours providing detailed responses, and at the end, she was offered the Administrative Assistant/Data Entry position for .00 per hour.“I have a little dog that I can’t take to the vet because I’m really strapped for funds. I started to cry and I’m not a person who cries easily,” said Tarsell. She told her neighbor about the new job, and then her neighbor said it was really a job scam.“I felt let down, disappointed, and ashamed,” she said.Fortunately, Tarsell didn't lose any money, but Angie Barnett, president and CEO of the Better Business Bureau serving Greater Maryland said that's what they were after.“'Alright, let's set you up for employment, we need a bank account,’” said Barnett. “They'll give you a check for ,000, tell you use this website to buy your items, cash this check and when you do, you're cashing usually a bad check.”Tarsell suspects the scammer knew how long she had been looking and saw her as easy prey.“They might see how long a résumé’s been on file with Indeed and they might see that you’re really desperate. And desperation, you do a lot of things, and here I sit,” Tarsell said. 2009
