House Speaker Nancy Pelosi held a press conference regarding the extension of increased unemployment benefits on Friday, hours before those benefits are set to expire. As part of the CARES Act, a coronavirus stimulus bill passed by Congress in March, federal unemployment benefits were increased by 0 a week. At the time, lawmakers thought it was a necessary move as millions lost their jobs amid lockdowns to prevent the spread of the virus. However, those benefits are set to expire this weekend. And with the unemployment rate still in double digits and the virus spreading at its highest levels yet, Democrats say increased unemployment benefits should be extended. On Thursday, reports emerged that Republicans were considering extending unemployment benefits, only at a level of about 0 a week. GOP lawmakers are expected to unveil their plan for another round of coronavirus stimulus next week.Pelosi slammed the Republicans' delay in her press conference Friday, calling it a "dereliction" of their duty. She asked that Republicans "get something on paper" so that Democrats and the American people could see their plan.House Democrats passed the HEROES Act in May — a trillion bill that would extend the 0 unemployment benefits through the end of the year. It would also extend those benefits to gig workers, independent contractors, and other self-employed people.Rep. Richard Neal, D-Massachusetts, called on Congress to keep up the "momentum" of the CARES Act by adopting the HEROES Act.Republicans argue that extending the benefits is too expensive and that the ,400 payments encourage people not to seek unemployment. However, Rep. Danny Davis, D-Illinois, argued that the benefits were needed because COVID-19 made it too dangerous for some to work, made others unable to work due to lost jobs, and made childcare more difficult due to the closure of schools. 1893

If you're in an industry hit hard by the pandemic, you may be considering making a career change. However, it can be hard to know where to begin and you may not feel like you're qualified.LinkedIn has a new tool called "career explorer" that could help you figure out the best career to transition into. You put in the job that you have or had most recently and it shows you in demand jobs that are a strong match for those same skills.“When it comes to retail positions, soft skills, there's a lot of soft skills that are acquired being in retail and we know from hiring managers that soft skills are highly in demand right now, especially in a COVID world,” said Blair Heitmann, a LinkedIn career expert. “Those are skills like communication, thought leadership, management and we know that those are just as important to those hard skills.”You want to make sure you're listing those skills. LinkedIn found people who have five or more skills on their profile are discovered by recruiters 27 times more.“You could have been on a team of servers that was a part of the restaurant that was the fastest growing restaurant in the area,” said Heitmann. “That demonstrates the quality of the service, so you want to make sure that you really word about the impact that you had on the role.”If you were a food server, the career experts at LinkedIn say you have three quarters of the skills you need to be a customer service specialist, which is one of the most in demand jobs. The similar skills include customer service and time management. 1543

If you were born after 1959, when Hawaii became the 50th state, 50 states in this country is all you've ever known. Paul Strauss, the shadow-senator for the District of Columbia, thinks it's time to change that. "This is the first century where we haven’t admitted a new state yet," Strauss told Scripps National Political Editor Joe St. George."That flag used to always change and get more and more stars on it," Strauss added. As shadow-senator, Strauss has no vote in committee or on the floor of the United States Senate. The possibility of another state joining the Union is intensifying as the prospect for a Democratic sweep on Election night increases. WHY ODDS ARE INCREASINGDemocrats are expected to maintain control of the House of Representatives and the chamber has already passed a bill admitting D.C. into the union.Democratic Nominee Joe Biden has also backed the idea. Meanwhile, if Democrats take back the Senate and change the filibuster rule, the possibility of D.C. becoming a state is even more likely. That's because Democrats would only need 51 votes in favor of statehood. Currently 60 votes are needed and unlikely even if Democrats win big on election night. DEMOCRATS' POLITICAL MOTIVE Of course Democrats have a political motive in making the District of Columbia a state beyond the belief that "no taxation without representation" is unjust. D.C. is an overwhelmingly Democratic city with only 4% voting for President Trump in 2016. In all likelihood, two Democratic Senators would be elected, giving Democrats a major political advantage for decades to come. "This is not about the voice of the people of the District of Columbia, this is a raw powerplay," Senator Steve Daines, R-Montana, said in a recent interview with Scripps. Daines says if D.C. truly wants representation, Virginia or Maryland could annex parts of the city where people live. Strauss couldn't disagree more. "We want to join the union. What could be more patriotic than that?" Strauss said. For those who say the Constitution calls for the seat of government to not be in a state, Strauss says a new special district would be created outside of D.C.'s jurisdiction and stretch from the Supreme Court to the Capitol, through the National Mall and to the White House. 2278

In a Sunday evening tweet, the UPS Store sent out a note offering to shred children's letters to Santa. Oops. The tweet read, "If your child addresses a letter to the North Pole, you can leave it with us. We do shredding." A company spokesperson told ABC News the now-deleted tweet was simply meant to highlight the company's shredding service. Unfortunately, that's not how the people of the interned took it. This is the darkest tweet I’ve ever seen https://t.co/tdo2pzMuwW— Dana Schwartz (@DanaSchwartzzz) December 17, 2018 534
