In previous years, she's often been the one to initiate contact."I would call it a societal shift," she said. "[Companies are] reaching out to me from all around the world."Something like this, she added "has never happened since the inception of UN Women," the United Nation's group dedicated to empowering women."Brands are always looking for opportunities to leverage events to shape their perceptions," said Tim Calkins, a marketing professor at Northwestern University's Kellogg School of Management."International Women's Day is a perfect opportunity for brands to talk about their commitment to empowerment."For some big companies, the event has become a focal point for major campaigns. This year, Mattel planned its "biggest global effort to date timed to International Women's Day," said Lisa McKnight, global general manager for Barbie, during an analyst event in February.Though Mattel is only offering three new Barbie dolls for purchase right away, it's planning to roll out another 14 "Shero" dolls — including ones based on Olympic snowboarding champion Chloe Kim and "Wonder Woman" director Patty Jenkins. The company is also inviting customers to tweet using the #MoreRoleModels to shout out women who inspire them.Procter & Gamble launched its big
So you think ice cream is child's play? The state of New York just gave the OK for companies to produce frozen treats that are strictly for the 21 and over crowd.Monday, Governor Andrew Cuomo signed a bill allowing the manufacture and sale of ice cream and other frozen desserts made with liquor in the state. The new legislation is designed to give dairy farmers, liquor and craft beverage producers cross the state a new market to explore."It might be nice for the adults, if they want to have a little bit of alcohol and kind of indulge while the kids are getting ice cream or candy or playing around in the fun atmosphere," said Adriana King, Assistant Manager of King Condrell's Candy and Ice Cream in Kenmore. 723
Sen. Rand Paul shared an update on his medical status Wednesday, tweeting that he has six broken ribs following an incident last week where a neighbor allegedly assaulted the Kentucky Republican at his home in Bowling Green."I appreciate all of the support from everyone. A medical update: final report indicates six broken ribs & new X-ray shows a pleural effusion," Paul tweeted Wednesday. The attorney representing the man who was charged with assaulting Paul called it an "unfortunate occurrence" in a statement and said it had nothing to do with politics."It was a very regrettable dispute between two neighbors over a matter that most people would regard as trivial," a statement by attorney Matthew Baker said.A neighbor who did not want to be identified previously told CNN?the two men have been "quibbling" over yard waste for years.According to the neighbor, Paul and Rene Boucher, who was charged with attacking Paul, share a property line in a gated community and have a long-running dispute over grass clippings and leaves blown onto each others' lawns. The neighbor did not witness Boucher allegedly assaulting Paul on Friday, and therefore could not say definitely if this is what led to the attack. It was initially reported that Paul had only sustained minor injuries, but Sunday, a senior adviser to Paul said the senator had five rib fractures, including three displaced fractures and bruised lungs.Paul tweeted Sunday?about the event: "Kelley and I appreciate the overwhelming support after Friday's unfortunate event. Thank you for your thoughts and prayers."CNN previously reported that Boucher was charged with one count of fourth-degree assault. He is currently out of jail after posting ,500 bail.According to the Bowling Green Daily News, Boucher is an anesthesiologist and pain specialist, and Boucher's attorney's statement noted that the two men worked together when they "were both practicing physicians.""We sincerely hope that Senator Paul is doing well and that these two gentlemen can get back to being neighbors as quickly as possible," Baker's statement Monday said. 2148

Spencer Davis, bandleader of the self-titled group that reeled off such hits as "Gimme Some Lovin'" and "I'm a Man," has died at the age of 81.Davis died Monday while being treated for pneumonia in a hospital, Rolling Stone reported.Steve Winwood, who served as lead singer of the Spencer Davis Group, called Davis "an early pioneer of the British folk scene" in a statement released Tuesday and said Davis was "like a big brother" to him."He was definitely a man with a vision and one of the pioneers of the British invasion of America in the sixties," Winwood said.Founded in Birmingham, England, in 1963, Davis teamed with Winwood, his bass-playing brother, Muff Winwood, and drummer Pete York to form the quartet. The band's first No. 1 single, "Keep On Running," was released in 1965.In the next two years, the Spencer Davis Group followed with another pair of hits -- "Gimme Some Lovin'" and "I'm a Man," both of which cracked the top 10 on the U.S. charts."Gimme Some Lovin'" has been featured in several popular movies, including "The Big Chill," "Days of Thunder" and "Striptease."In recent years, the band is arguably known for its trick trivia question, "Who was the lead singer of the Spencer Davis Group?"Winwood eventually left the band to form Traffic in 1967, but the Spencer Davis Group carried on without him, though with far less success. The group eventually disbanded in 1969.This story was originally published by Peter Burke at WPTV. 1463
