SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — County officials closed a portion of La Jolla's coastline after a sewage spill Friday morning.The closure was issued for the area of Playa Del Norte in Windansea, near the 7000 block of Neptune Pl., after a sewage spilled before 9:30 a.m.Seven year La Jolla resident Marc Hirschfield said he was walking his dogs Saturday morning when he noticed the yellow warning signs dotting the beach and asked lifeguards what happened. He said they told him "there was a manhole cover that overflowed and raw sewage spilled into the ocean."Lifeguards told 10News it was a storm drain to blame in the same area.The spill has been contained, according to the County Department of Environmental Health, but there still may be impacts to water quality after 130 gallons of sewage entered the beach area.Warning signs have been placed in the area until samples of the ocean water indicate the water is safe for recreational use. It's not clear how long the area will remain closed.Some beach-goers ignored the signs, others, like surfer Cole Reiner just didn't see them. "Well I went out into the water. I mean contaminated doesn’t sound great, but I was out there and it says may cause illness so that’s not great," he said. Lifeguards couldn't say when the beach would reopen. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Cal Trans closed down a section of southbound I-5 Thursday night.The closer started at 9:30 p.m. from the I-805 split to La Jolla Village Drive.The closure is expected to last until 5 a.m. Friday.Crews shut down the section of freeway due to necessary work on the construction of a trolley overpass over the interstate. Teams needed to bring heavy equipment onto the freeway to pour concrete onto the structure.Overnight and early morning commuters that take I-5 SB is being rerouted to I-805 SB and will need to use Highway 52 or I-8 to cut over.Crews say they will need to do follow up work within on the overpass in the next few weeks, so drivers should expect the same closure again. 716

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Crews battled flames from two house fires that sprang up overnight in San Diego.The first fire was reported in City Heights at about 3 a.m. Crews responded to a home in the 4000 block of 42nd Street engulfed in flames.One person made it out of the home safely and surrounding neighbors were temporarily evacuated as a precaution. Neighbors say the homeowner was not inside when the fire broke out. It took about 30 minutes to knock the fire down and no injuries were reported.San Diego Fire Department said Metro Arson Strike Team determined the fire was intentionally set. The blaze caused an estimated 0,000 in total damages.No arrests have been made.Fire crews also doused a fire in Encanto at an abandoned home near 66th St. and Madera St. The home's doors and windows were boarded up and transients frequented the property, according to fire crews.No injuries were reported in that fire as well. 955

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – Any other year, Sonia Highbaugh and her family would be spending Christmas gathered at her sister’s house, but in true 2020 fashion, things look a little different this holiday.“I was sad this year not being able to spend the holidays with my extended family and everyone, but we make those hard decisions for the betterment of everybody,” said Highbaugh. “We actually stayed home, it’s just my immediate family, my boyfriend, and our two boys. We made videos of them opening their gifts so we can share with family so we can feel like we were together.”Highbaugh works for the Chicano Federation and says through training with the San Diego Latino Health Coalition; she received pointers on how she should be spending the holiday this year.“With the pandemic, we wanted to be safe. I’m also expecting, so it’s very important for me to stay safe,” she said.Registered Nurse Francisco Garcia can relate.“It’s just us three,” said Garcia.While breaking traditions can be challenging, Garcia, his wife, and daughter also decided to spend Christmas at home together.“Being a Latino, my family chooses to get together every year for Christmas and have food and presents. Just having everyone together is what we take pride in, and so it’s very different that we’re not around each other this year,” he said.Working as a registered nurse, Garcia knows all too well the potential consequences of large gatherings during the pandemic, especially after the surge in COVID-19 cases after Thanksgiving celebrations.“Seeing an influx of patients and the number of patients we’re seeing with COVID as the year went on was a big challenge,” he said.Health officials across the nation, including here in San Diego County, have urged people to stay home, avoid traveling and large gatherings, despite that some continue to ignore the guidance.According to the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), 846,520 people in the United States were screened at TSA checkpoints on Christmas Eve alone, and millions more were screened since last Friday.Still, many families are playing safe and having a great time doing so.“It has been fantastic; I think the biggest challenge we’ve had is not burning the Christmas dinner,” said Garcia.“We have to trust our community.
