CANBERRA, Aug. 13 (Xinhua) -- An anti-China rant by an editor on Australia's biggest-selling national newspaper has come under fire from netizens around the world.     Greg Sheridan, an editor of The Australian, flattered Rebiya Kadeer -- leader of the separatist World Uygur Congress -- for her "courage" to confront the Chinese government in an article published Wednesday.     In his article, titled "Uygurs must fight for rights within China," Sheridan said Rebiya should leave aside her campaign for a separate state for a while and "concentrate instead on human rights, cultural autonomy and democracy," so as to win support and aid from Western nations.     He lauded Rebiya's week-long visit to Australia, saying it would "change the course of Chinese politics."     However, responding to Sheridan's instruction to the self-appointed Uygur leader, many netizens expressed their disagreement with his absurdities and scoffed at his ignorance and crankiness.     "Has anyone worked out of these facts about Kadeer? She was born and grew up in Xinjiang, but she cannot speak Chinese (Mandarin); She has 11 children and many many grand children (a lot of them live abroad); she was once one of the richest women in China; she had been a representative for her people in the highest political body in China and had gushed so much praises for the Chinese government...," Weldon, a netizen in Canberra, said in a follow-up post to Sheridan's article.     "'Extermination of Uygur cultural?' or 'Ethnic cleansing?' or 'Suppressing the minority people?' or 'A woman compassionate for her cause?', I am confused," he said.     Jonny of China called the report "another anti-Chinese rant."     "I did not read all the replies. I did not need to. Most that Iread succinctly corrected your bias," he said.     "The minorities in China including the Tibetans which you again focus on are given favored treatment... Greg your obvious ignorance of China is appalling for a person who writes about international affairs," Jonny added.     A netizen named David said Australia's invitation for Rebiya was wrong.     "Let's imagine what will happen if Australians invite Bin Laden to Sydney to give a speech with topic like 'How to end the U.S. rule around the globe and fight for the rights for all Muslims," he said.     Sharon of Brissy called Sheridan's article "a load of rubbish."     "Get your facts right before you start making bias reporting. The Uygurs get a lot of privileges as compared to the Hans. Plus during the ethnic riots were incited by the Uygurs with the majority who died are Hans," she said.     GMK of Gold Coast, who described himself as a "war veteran -- married to a traditional Australian-Chinese lady with a young son, and a frequent visitor to China," said he was puzzled about this media/Australian government-driven fantasy.     "That is their China and the Chinese, which is being produced. It is nothing like reality," he said.     The 56 separate and distinct ethnic groups within the borders of China all "have their cultural sensitivities guaranteed" by the Chinese government, he noted.     Yue, a netizen in Melbourne, said he did not understand why Western nations always have a prejudice against China.     "Why Western countries always see people instigating terror and hatred in China as a hero? Why do they always believe words said by these people rather than government?" he asked.

BEIJING, July 21 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping Tuesday urged Communist Party members and government officials to exert more efforts to learn and implement the Scientific Outlook on Development.     Xi, also member of the Standing Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee Political Bureau, made the remarks during a meeting on better implementation of the theory.     He said after the first and second round of the theory implementation work, progress has been made in solving problems, institutional innovation and Party's working style building.     He urged Party members and government officials to better deal with social contradiction and disputes and further strengthen the social security work.     Xi also pointed out the third-round learning would mainly be held at towns, villages, communities, hospitals, and primary and secondary schools.     About 1.22 million grass-roots Party organizations with nearly 40 million members will join the third round learning work.

URUMQI, Sept. 5 (Xinhua) -- The party chief of Urumqi and police chief of northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region were removed from their posts Saturday. The removal came after the July 5 riot in Urumqi which left 197people dead and following syringe attacks in the city that caused panic among the public. Li Zhi, 59, secretary of the Urumqi Municipal Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC), was replaced by Zhu Hailun, 51, secretary of the CPC Xinjiang Autonomous Regional Political and Legislative Affairs Committee, according to a decision by the CPC Xinjiang Autonomous Regional Committee and approved by the CPC Central Committee.     Li was appointed the Urumqi party chief in November, 2006.     Also on Saturday, Xinjiang's police chief Liu Yaohua was replaced by Zhu Changjie, party chief of Xinjiang's Aksu Prefecture. Zhang Hong said on Friday the situation was basically under control in the city.     SYRINGE ATTACKS     Fresh protests broke out this week after hundreds of Urumqi residents reported that they were stabbed by syringes. Five people were dead and at least 14 people hospitalized over injuries in the protests.     Tens of thousands of people took to the streets to protest against the syringe attacks and demand security guarantees.     By Thursday, local hospitals had dealt with 531 victims of hypodermic syringe stabbings, 106 of whom showed obvious signs of needle attacks.     Chinese military medical experts on Saturday ruled out the possibility that radioactive substance, anthrax and toxic chemical were used in recent syringe attacks in Urumqi City.     "According to the preliminary test results, such possibilities can be ruled out," said Qian Jun, director of Disease Control and Biological Security Office with China's Academy of Military Medical Sciences.     Qian said he, along with other five medical experts from the military, had examined medical records of more than 200 victims since Friday.     Samples had been sent to Beijing for further test, Qian added.     Xinjiang police has captured 25 suspects amid the syringe scare, of whom seven are in police custody, four were arrested and four others were referred for criminal prosecution.     Four suspects, three men and one woman, have been prosecuted for endangering public security, said Wutkur Abdurahman, procurator general of the city's procuratorate Saturday.     The four, all from the Uygur ethnic group, were involved in three cases.     Two suspects threatened a taxi driver with a syringe and robbed him, one suspect allegedly inserted a pin into a woman's buttock at a roadside fruit stall, and the other injured police when resisting arrest with a syringe that contained drug.     SOCIAL ORDER BACK TO NORMAL     Xinhua reporters witnessed Saturday that most of the buses in Urumqi had resumed operation. People could be seen on buses, some of which were even a bit crowded. Many were waiting at bus stops.     A large number of customers could be seen at the Carrefour Supermarket at Nanhunanlu Road. Long queues were seen in front of the cashiers at noon.     In Hepingnanlu Road and Xinhuananlu Road, areas mainly inhabited by people of Uygur ethnic group, shops on both sides of the roads have resumed operation.     Situation in Urumqi came under control Friday, as there were no major protests in the city. Small crowds, which gathered "in a fewlocations," were soon dispersed, said Executive Deputy Mayor ZhangHong. BEIJING, August 5 -- Property sales across 30 cities in China fell 4 percent in July as prices soared and supplies dwindled with big cities feeling the pinch for the first time this year, analysts said.     According to the UWIN property transaction system, the floor space of apartments sold in July dipped 5.37 percent over June to 1.04 million sq m.     Statistics put out by the Beijing Real Estate Transaction website showed that sales of forward delivery housing in Beijing fell to 10,862 units last month, compared to 12,840 units in June.     Property transactions in Guangzhou fell 36 percent over June. The figure is only half of that of May, said Guangzhou's official property website.     "The fall has been triggered by high property prices and shrinking supplies in some cities," said Qin Xiaomei, head of research, Jones Lang LaSalle Beijing. "Property developers have slowed down the pace of new projects in the second half after robust sales in the first half," she said.     Property prices in China's 70 major cities were up 0.8 percent in June, the fourth month-on-month growth in a row this year, according to statistics from the National Development and Reform Commission.     Beijing and Shanghai reported a month-on-month growth of 0.4 and 1 percentage points respectively in June, with prices skyrocketing to record highs of 2007 in some areas, fueled by strong investment, purchase demand and higher land prices.     The high prices have also made most of the prospective buyers wary of making fresh investments.     Li Wei, a 29-year-old company executive in Beijing, said he would prefer to adopt a wait-and-see attitude as the high prices have made most of his preferred apartments unaffordable.     "The unit price of the apartment has soared to 20,000 yuan per sq m from 14,500 yuan per sq m 40 days ago," Li said.     For others like Zhang Li, a property speculator from Wenzhou, Zhejiang province, this is the time to cash in. The apartment she bought in November last year has gained 40 percent in the past six months, largely exceeding her expectations.     "I am a bit uneasy with such a rapid increase in such a short period of time," said Zhang, who has property investment experience of more than a decade. "With people's income and economic fundamentals seeing no big change, I think selling the property will be a safer bet."     According to Grant Ji, director of Savills (Beijing), a UK-based real estate service provider, the fall in transaction volume is still within a normal band.     "July was an off-season for the housing market," said Ji.     "With no big shift likely in the macroeconomic policy during the second half, property prices are unlikely see a big fall as the market is still awash with funds," Ji said.

BRUSSELS, Sept. 1 (Xinhua) -- The European Union (EU) should restrain its use of anti-dumping measures against imports from China, the Chinese ambassador to the EU urged on Tuesday, calling for more dialogue and cooperation.     "We saw reemergence of anti-dumping cases against China recently. An increasing number of Chinese enterprises received unfair treatment. We are very concerned about this," Song Zhe told the International Trade Committee of the European Parliament, which is newly formed after June elections.     "But we believe between China and Europe, there is more cooperation than competition, more opportunities than challenges. At present, it is urgent to strengthen economic and trade cooperation by maintaining mutual flow of trade and investment and creating more business opportunities," he added.     Faced with the worst economic crisis in decades, the EU has launched a series of anti-dumping actions against China this year, covering a wide range of Chinese products. As from late July, the 27-nation bloc took five separate decisions in just three weeks.     Such a frequent use of anti-dumping probes and punitive duties has been unprecedented. The EU's unusual move leads to concern, especially when the world economy is in recession due to the financial crisis.     "We hope the EU will prevent this uncontrolled development of anti-dumping. We also hope to strengthen dialogue and refrain from arbitrary use of anti-dumping measures for the sake of further cooperation opportunities," Song said.     He said that China has been opposed to any form of protectionism, especially in the current financial crisis which needs cooperation among world governments rather than protection.     In his address to EU lawmakers, Song noted that economic and trade cooperation has always been an important part of China-EU relations, which he said are becoming more mature and stable in recent decades.     Currently, China and the EU are one of the most important trade partners to each other. Bilateral trade volume reached 425.6 billion U.S. dollars in 2008 from 2.4 billion dollars in 1975, an increase of 176 times, according to Song.     Mutual investment also started from scratch and now the EU have made a total investment of 63.9 billion U.S. dollars and operating more than 20,000 companies in China. In recent years, Chinese companies are beginning to invest actively in Europe.     The sustained and rapid development of China-EU economic and trade cooperation has created huge benefit to both sides and helps promote closer bilateral relationship.     However, Song acknowledged the China-EU trade and investment have no escape from the current global financial crisis.     "In the first seven months, bilateral trade volume fell by 20.7percent and the EU investment in China fell by 4.8 percent. China-EU trade and economic relations are facing severe test," he said.     Despite the difficulties, Song referred to the bright sides. He said the economic stimulus plans implemented by China and the EU provide enterprises of both sides with new business opportunities, while both markets contain great potential in the wake of the crisis.     But Song stressed unless China and the EU make efforts to defuse friction and contradictions, to strengthen consultation and cooperation and seek mutual benefit and win-win results, the great potential can not be translated into reality.     He said China and the EU should have a strategic perspective on the long-term development of bilateral relations and make sure that temporary issue does not affect the mainstream of cooperation.     Challenged by an EU lawmaker on the EU's trade deficit with China, which is a major concern for the 27-nation bloc, Song said it has been caused by various reasons and China is working on that.     "The trade imbalance is caused by many reasons, including the international industrial transfer and thus the relocation of trade. China's trade policy is not the cause," he said. "Nevertheless, in recent years, the Chinese government adopted a series of measures to encourage more imports, such as import promotion activities, greater facilitation of imports, sending purchasing groups and so on."     Separately, a senior official of the Chinese Ministry of Commerce said in Beijing on Monday that China's trade surplus with the EU for 2009 will be less than last year.     Song said in order to solve problems arising from expanding trade relations, China and the EU should uphold the principle of mutual openness and mutual benefit, maintain and improve the existing communication and coordination mechanisms, and give full play to complementary advantages of both economies.
