YOSEMITE NATIONAL PARK, Calif. — Rock climber Emily Harrington has become the first woman, and fourth person, to free-climb the Golden Gate route on Yosemite National Park’s granite wall in a single day.The 34-year-old began to scale 3,000-foot El Capitan early Wednesday. The San Francisco Chronicle says Harrington reached the top in 21 hours, 13 minutes and 51 seconds, despite banging her head on the granite wall at one point.Free climbers don't use ropes to ascend, only to catch them if they fall.Harrington posted about her accomplishment on Instagram over the weekend.“I never believed I could actually free climb El Cap in a day when I first set the goal for myself,” she wrote in a caption. “It didn’t seem like a realistic objective for me. I didn’t have the skills, fitness, or risk profile to move so quickly over such a large piece of stone. But I chose it exactly for that reason. Impossible dreams challenge us to rise above who we are now to see if we can become better versions of ourselves.”As for her head injury, Harrington says she suffered a “nasty slip” that almost took her resolve. It left a deep gash on her forehead, but she soldiered through it and reached the end by about 10:30 p.m. View this post on Instagram A post shared by ????? ?????????? With the surge in people buying above ground and inflatable pools, coupled with the fact that kids are spending nearly all their time at home now, the risk of drowning is up significantly. It’s the leading cause of death among young children.“A lot of that has to do with just the nature of those toddlers. They are impulsive. They are quick. They're just built to explore and they're not great at following rules or understanding limits. And for them water is a fascinating thing and if they can find it, they will, and they're going to try and get in it,” said Dr. Ben Hoffman, pediatrician with AAP Council on Injury, Violence and Poison Prevention.Hoffman says a locking fence around the entire pool can cut the risk of drowning by half. If you don’t have a fence for inflatable pools, emptying them out is best. For above ground, he suggests removing the ladder.Swim lessons also can decrease the risk of drowning. But nothing replaces the constant, within arm’s length, non-distracted adult supervision.“You have to have somebody designated as a water watcher,” said Sophia Brizeus, whose daughter drowned in pool. “Make sure they are watching the kids in the water because like I said, this can happen to anybody and it only takes a second, it only takes a second.”Brizeus started the Love Bug Foundation in memory of her daughter Soraya, who was almost 2 years old when she drowned while they were visiting with family one Sunday afternoon. The toddler just slipped away and into the pool, even with adults around.Soraya was even supposed to start swim lessons a week later.Brizeus is now educating other parents about water safety through Facebook and Instagram accounts.“What I’ve learned about the drownings is it’s not like the movies at all. It happens quick. It’s silent and a child can be with a room full of people and it still happens,” said Brizeus. 1874
"He's an amazing baby, all he does is eat and sleep," she says. But what makes this feat even more remarkable is that Emerson underwent a heart transplant in 2014. She was diagnosed with restrictive cardiomyopathy in 2011, and was later put on a long list of recipients for a heart transplant. Her prayers were answered on Valentine's Day in 2014. She received her heart from 21-year-old Blake Adkins, who died from a brain aneurysm. Emerson remains close to Adkins' mother Donna, who is overjoyed that her son lives on through Emerson and now her new baby boy, too."She was so excited because her son was not only able to keep me alive, but he was also to keep my baby alive as well," Emerson said. "I mean my heart, his heart, beats for two."Emerson says her family is now complete. She married her husband Bradley a year ago, and her family grew with his two children. Emerson also has an adopted son. Now with her new baby, Collings, she feels like her family is complete. But she knows it's a family that almost never was, and wouldn't have been without Adkins' sacrifice. She urges everyone to register to be a donor. She says she and her baby are proof it saves lives. This story was originally published by 1213

is warning people about the red flags.Chelsea Earley almost fell for what she thinks is a scam after she read an email that popped up in her school inbox."Yeah because I was like 'oh it’s a job placement in student services, maybe it’s legit,' ” she said.It was enticing her with a 0 weekly paycheck if she kept up with their instructions. She put in her phone number and address and a week later she got a package in the mail. They opened it and found a check for ,355, plus detailed instructions that told her to deposit the check and then within 24 hours, buy two 0 Walmart gift cards, scratch off the back, take a picture and send it in so they can get their money back."I was like who is sending you a ,300 check? That’s insane. You’re 19 years old,” said Christy Bidgood, Earley’s mom.Her age falls in line with research from the Federal Trade Commission that say the highest number of fake check scam victims are people in their 20s because they don’t understand how checks work. The BBB says it can take a week or two for a check to bounce, yet banks typically release the money into the account sooner than that."Yeah I do have a lack of knowledge about checks so I think people that don’t understand checks, they are definitely going to fall for it,” Earley said. The BBB says be wary of a company that overpays an employee and then asks them for money to be wired elsewhere. They say no legitimate business would do this. The BBB doesn’t have record of the company’s business profile in their system, but they say at least seven other people have reported concerns through their 1598
