As a primary care doctor at Vanderbilt University, Dr. John Scott can understand why people were initially delaying preventative care back in the spring, but now, many of the patients he’s seeing are sicker, having delayed routine care for months.“We’re going to have to pay that bill later, and the cost is going to be much greater,” he said. What worries Dr. Scott the most is the 50 percent drop-off in cancer screenings across the country. With Americans avoiding the doctor, they’re putting off preventative screenings for breast cancer, colon cancer and cervical cancer. Diseases that have a much higher rate of being cured when caught early.“So, the impact of that is significant when you think about the benefit of catching cancer at an early stage,” Dr. Scott added.Nearly one-third of Americans have put off healthcare during COVID-19, which is why physicians nationwide are now urging people to schedule that regular checkup sooner rather than later. According to the CDC, 40 percent of Americans are also struggling with mental health issues and depression right now, something most doctors screen for during regular checkups.“Healthcare is a marathon and you want to put the finish line as far out as possible, so if we start skipping steps, then we aren’t going to get to the finish line we want,” Dr. Scott warned. And since it could be months or even years before the pandemic is over, family physicians across the country are urging people to at least consider making that a trip to the doctor.“It’s safe to return. It’s safer to return than not, when we look at these long-term issues. There is medical care that needs to occur,” Dr. Scott added. 1670
As cases of COVID-19 surge among members of FC Dallas, the MLS announced that it has postponed the team’s match against the Vancouver Whitecaps scheduled for Wednesday.Six players from FC Dallas in the last week have tested positive for COVID-19.The MLS is resuming play this week in Orlando, Florida as part of a tournament after the league shutdown in mid-March, less than two weeks into the 2020 season.. The entire league is staying in Orlando, and will play all matches at the Wide World of Sports complex.Four of the positive tests have cone since the team has arrived in Orlando, prompting concerns that the virus could spread within the protective bubble the league has established. All FC Dallas players are quarantining themselves in their hotel rooms. The match has now been pushed back to July 15.“In consultation with MLS medical officials, FC Dallas took proactive steps to isolate the newly-affected players as well as all FC Dallas players and staff in Orlando out of an abundance of caution. An Australian energy company is giving hundreds of female employees a raise to make sure they get paid the same amount as their male counterparts. It's "not right or fair to expect women to have to wait any longer for the pay gap to close -- so, we're fixing that right now," said Catherine Tanna, managing director of Energy Australia, said in a statement announcing the move.Around 350 women at the electricity and gas supplier will receive a one-off adjustment to their salaries, with an average increase of about 3,500 Australian dollars (,740), according to the company. About 80 men who earn less than colleagues doing the same job will also get a salary bump. The raises will add an extra 1.2 million Australian dollars (0,000) to the company's annual salary bill. It announced the investment Wednesday, on the eve of International Women's Day.The changes will be made quickly. Energy Australia said the new pay packages will go into effect next month, effectively closing the company's current 2% gender pay gap.But addressing the broader issue of unequal pay across Australia will take a lot longer.Australian women earn on average about 84 cents for every dollar that men earn, according to government figures. The gap widens once annual bonuses and other additional payments are included, with women earning about 73 cents for every dollar that men earn. That means men working full time earn nearly 27,000 Australian dollars (,000) a year more on average than full-time women employees, according to Australia's Workplace Gender Equality Agency.Everyone is playing catch up to Iceland. The Nordic country made it illegal to pay women less than men earlier this year, requiring companies to proactively get equal pay certification from the government.Iceland ranks first among 144 countries for gender equality across politics, education, pay and health policies, according the World Economic Forum's annual report on the issue.Australia comes in at 35, while the US is ranked 49. 2009

An outbreak of salmonella infections linked to chicken salad has sickened 65 people in five states, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported Thursday. No deaths have been reported, but 28 people have been hospitalized.Diarrhea, fever and abdominal cramps are the symptoms of salmonella poisoning. Signs of illness usually occur within 12 to 72 hours and last for four to seven days in most cases. An investigation by the CDC and the US Department of Agriculture linked the outbreak to chicken salad produced by Triple T Specialty Meats Inc. in January and February and sold at Fareway grocery stores in Illinois, Iowa, Minnesota, Nebraska and South Dakota. Most of the sick people are in Iowa.Triple T Specialty Meats has recalled all chicken salad sold at Fareway stores between January 4 and February 9.If consumers purchased chicken salad from Fareway but don't remember the date, they should not eat it, the CDC says. Either throw it away or return it to the store.Even if some of the chicken salad was eaten or served with no ill effects, the CDC advises throwing the rest away in a sealed bag so children or animals cannot eat it. Wash and sanitize countertops, refrigerators or freezers -- wherever the salad was stored.Because foods from animals may be contaminated with salmonella, never eat raw or undercooked eggs, poultry or meat, the CDC says. Most people recover from a salmonella infection without treatment. However, for some, the diarrhea may be so severe that hospitalization is necessary. In rare cases, an infection can lead to death unless a patient receives prompt treatment with antibiotics. 1648
