BEIJING, Nov. 17 (Xinhua) -- China and Chile celebrated the 40th anniversary of bilateral diplomatic ties at a reception here Wednesday.Chinese State Councilor Liu Yandong and visiting Chilean president Sebastian Pinera attended the reception, which was held by Chilean Embassy.China was ready to take the opportunity of this anniversary to push forward Sino-Chilean relations, Liu said when addressing the reception.Noting Chile was the first Latin American country to establish diplomatic ties with China, Liu said the Chinese government attached great importance to developing the bilateral ties from strategic perspective.Pinera, on his first China visit since taking office as Chilean president in March, expressed the willingness to expand cooperation and friendship with China, and he hailed the progress made in bilateral cooperation since the two countries forged ties in 1970.Chile is China's second biggest trade partner in Latin America and China is Chile's biggest trade partner. Bilateral trade last year rose 2.1 percent to 17.72 billion dollars.China and Chile forged a comprehensive cooperative partnership in 2004.

LANZHOU, Dec. 7 (Xinhua) -- Floods caused by torrential rains and tropical cyclones have left at least 3,222 people killed and 1,003 others missing across China in the first eleven months of this year, government statistics released Tuesday show."In 2010, China experienced the worst flooding casualties and damage since 1998," Water Resources Minister Chen Lei said during a national drought and flooding relief workshop held in the northwest city of Lanzhou.Further, the average accumulated rainfall across China this year has increased nearly 10 percent over levels recorded in previous years. In some areas, the figure shot up five times over that recorded in a usual year.Nearly 270 towns and cities were flooded, 437 rivers swelled with water and 111 of them broke past records, and thousands of dams faced dangers, Chen said.Floods also destroyed 2.27 million houses and damaged 17.87 million hectares of farmland, statistics show. The economic loss caused by this year's flooding has reached 374.5 billion yuan (56.74 million U.S. dollars), said officials.

NEW YORK, Jan. 17 (Xinhua) -- A video show about Chinese people made its debut on screens at Times Square on Monday, presenting Americans a multi-dimensional and vivid image of Chinese people.With China's traditional red as the theme color, the 60-second video was shown on six screens simultaneously at Times Square with a billboard written "Experience China" on top of the screens. The show highlights Chinese ordinary people and some important figures recognized by the international community, including Chinese pianist Lang Lang, basketball player Yao Ming and Chinese astronaut Yang Liwei, etc."The layout of the video is quite smart. I like it," Charlotte Mcguckin, 18, a high school student in New York, told Xinhua, adding that "everyone (in the video) looks happy.""Look, that's Yao Ming. I can recognize him, and also the female table tennis player standing beside him. She is very famous, " she said, pointing to the giant screen. "I learned in class that U.S. and China started diplomatic ties from playing the table tennis," she smiled.For Si Yaqin, who came to New York with her son for vacation, watching the debut of the video is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. "It's my first time to New York, first time to Times Square," she told Xinhua. "How lucky I am here to witness this moment.
