SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A Paradise Hills family is in search of a good Samaritan after a young autistic man was mugged and beaten for his brand new iPhone, just blocks from his home.The incident played out along Briarwood Road on an afternoon two weeks ago. Garrett De Leon had just gotten off work and off the bus.His pride and joy was in his right hand - a new iPhone 10 that his parents gave to him for his birthday. Deleon was texting his mom that he was blocks from home, when it happened."This guy came from behind me and snatched my phone and pushed me to the ground," said De Leon.De Leon says he fought back, the two struggling on the ground. "He pushed me again and runs to the car," said De Leon.Deleon says he chased the man - a tall, lean black man wearing a beanie - to an older black car, where the man jumped in the back seat, the window rolled down."He tells his buddy to take off immediately," said De Leon. In the meantime, the thief was hitting De Leon, who says he was delivering his own blows through the window."I had too much adrenaline and didn't feel pain. Hopped up on anger and determined to get at them and at the phone," said De Leon.After the car started up, it dragged De Leon some 100 feet before he was thrown off, bloodied with cuts and and scrapes, and a sprained hand.Soon after, a Hispanic woman in her 20s, with a baby in her back seat, raced to his side. She tended to him before calling 9-1-1."Shows there are good people. She was more worried about me than her baby," said De Leon.When help arrived and she left, De Leon never got her name. "I wish I could thank her as a mom, as a person," said Shawn De Leon, Garrett's mother.She says she prefers to focus on the actions of that stranger, and not the other one."There are bad things happen to good people, and there are good people that rally when bad things happen," said Shawn De Leon.If you know who the Good Samaritan is, send tips to Tips@10news.com. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A Kearny Mesa couple says a local hawk is preying on neighborhood cats, and hope their story prompts pet owners to be cautious. Over Memorial Day weekend Caralee and Joe Jaeckels took their cats outside to enjoy the garden. Not long after, they said a hawk swooped down. "At first we thought it was kind of cool," they said. "It's this bird flying around. But we discovered pretty quickly that it was not a cool thing."The bird began attacking the couple's cat Ludwick. Thankfully, the 16-pound cat was able to escape with only a scratch on his face. His owners say this probably meant he was too heavy for the hawk to carry him away. 677

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A heartbroken dog owner is demanding answers from a motel in Mission Valley.Mary Prevost left her 4-year-old German Shepherd alone her room Saturday night when she went to dinner then found out later it had been hit and killed on Interstate 8.“I opened my door and my dog wasn’t there,” said Prevost, “I ran down to the front desk and said my dog wasn’t there and the woman said around 8:30 they had seen a dog running around in the parking lot.”Prevost says the motel staff said they tried calling her but they had dialed the wrong number.The dog owner then drove around Mission Valley as Saturday night turned into Sunday morning — then animal control rang.“She apologized and said that a dog that fit my description with a red collar had been hit on the highway and she was on the side of the road,” said Prevost through tears.“I planned to take her to Coronado beach the next day and instead I picked her up dead on the highway,” said PrevostPrevost had 4-year-old Valkyrie cremated on Sunday, but now she is grappling with Motel 6 management about how this happened.Prevost says the motel's risk managers told her the dog likely opened up the door on its own.“If they just called me or animal control or the police,” said Prevost, ”I could have gotten her because she was alive.”She says the hotel has video of the dog wandering the motel and the parking lot, but they won’t let her see it.Motel 6 has denied multiple requests by 10News for comment.Prevost says it just doesn’t seem fair to blame the dog.“The problem is even if she got the door open,” said Prevost, “they just let her go.” 1622

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A human smuggler reportedly used two children as decoys by dropping them over the border into concertina wire, according to U.S. Customs and Border Protection. CBP reports that two Salvadoran girls, ages six and nine, were dropped roughly eight feet from the San Diego border behind concertina wire late Monday night. “Agents responded and moments later, a group of 10 individuals crossed the border in the area agents vacated,” said Rodney Scott, Chief Patrol Agent for the U.S. Border Patrol. Scott said on social media that the group eluded capture. The two young girls were given medical attention for what CBP called minor injuries. The agency is working with the consulate in El Salvador to locate the girls’ parents, the agency said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A preliminary 5.8-magnitude earthquake struck in Inyo County, just north of Ridgecrest, on Wednesday.The quake occurred at about 10:40 a.m. in the Lone Pine area, about 60 miles north of Ridgecrest, according to the USGS. There have not been any immediate reports of injury or damage.The initial 5.8 earthquake was followed by several smaller shake-ups, ranging from magnitude 2.5 to 4.6.USGS's "Did You Feel It?" map reported the quake was felt as far away as Fresno to the north, Los Angeles to the south, and Las Vegas, Nev., to the east. There was no threat of a tsunami due to the quake, according to the National Tsunami Warning Center.The earthquake comes a day after a 7.5-magnitude quake struck Mexico's southern coastline, just east of the popular tourist destination Huatulco, Oaxaca. 822
