SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Normal Heights will become the testing ground for 7-Eleven's newest store strategy aimed at young consumers.The company will open a location of its "Evolution Store" concept at 3504 El Cajon Blvd. "in the next month or so," a company spokesperson told 10News.The store, geared to have a millennial appeal, will offer consumers options like made-to-order coffee and smoothie drinks, kombucha and cold brew on tap, and self-serve frozen yogurt. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — One of the country's best spots to lay and in the sand and watch the tide roll in is right in San Diego.Stephen Leatherman, a professor at Florida International University more widely known as "Dr. Beach," has released his annual list of the best beaches in the U.S. Rounding out the top 10 at number nine is San Diego's own Coronado Beach for the second straight year.Tucked along Coronado, the beach is hailed by Leatherman as a local oasis and "toast of Southern California."RELATED: Coronado's Free Summer Shuttle service launches before Memorial Day"Coronado Beach is the toast of Southern California; it is a veritable oasis by the sea, measuring hundreds of yards wide. He uses 50 criteria to evaluate beaches, including water and sand quality as well as safety and management. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Mostra Coffee, the San Diego-based coffee company that recently won the award for Best Roaster in the U.S., has opened its second brick-and-mortar store.The move is a risk, as many small businesses had to close or scale back during the coronavirus pandemic."Being an entrepreneur, it's just something that you pretty much fight for, and you are you're kind of programmed to just take a leap off the cliff even though you don't know what's happening," said Jelynn Malone, one of Mostra's co-owners.The new location is in 4S Ranch, an area of town that asked Mostra to move in. A petition in 2019 calling for the new location got more than 1,500 signatures."It was something that the community rallied for, and we felt that the community deserved it," said Malone. "So we just piecemeal this thing and slowly worked our way through to the point where we can actually open."But Malone admits it was scary taking that kind of risk during the Pandemic."Being a small business with over 20 employees, including my own family, it was very troubling and scary," she said.The company went through layoffs in the spring, and work on the new location slowed to a crawl. To keep the business going, Mostra built a website and app to allow for curbside pick-up and online ordering.Now that the new 4S Ranch location is open, Malone and her co-owners say the struggle has made their success more enjoyable."I'm so happy we made this decision, and I'm so happy with how the shop turned out. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) One day after a woman was hit and killed crossing El Cajon Boulevard, a local business group is demanding change. The 63-year-old woman was hit by an SUV while crossing El Cajon Boulevard near 46th Street in the Talmadge area Monday around 5 p.m. "We're devastated. Unfortunately, I actually get news like this almost every week," said Beryl Forman, Marketing and Mobility Coordinator of the El Cajon Boulevard Business Improvement Association.The woman who was killed was not in a crosswalk. Forman said a lack of crosswalks is just one of the problems. RELATED: Woman struck, killed by SUV while crossing Talmadge-area street"We have high speeds of traffic, there aren't enough crosswalks, and you're in the middle of dense urban neighborhoods with local businesses that people peruse on a regular basis." The association purchased a speed indicator sign that is now posted on El Cajon Boulevard near 50th Street. The group was planning to present the sign to the Mid-City Police Department during an event Tuesday evening, but is using the time to hold a vigil in memory of the woman who died.The office of San Diego City Council President Georgette Gomez issued the following statement regarding the group's concerns. "Investments in pedestrian safety have been a priority for me in every budget discussion since I first took office. I have requested resources for the Safe Routes to Schools program, the City's Vision Zero project, and the El Cajon Boulevard Complete Boulevard Plan. These plans include improvements that increase pedestrian safety such as crosswalks, bulb-outs, new sidewalks, and street lighting. The City is investing in these projects and has also been securing grant funds from state and federal sources.Earlier this year, the Mayor announced the completion of safety improvements at 15 of San Diego's most accident-prone intersections and secured funding for hundreds more. Players throw an axe at a wooden target and score points based on where the axe lands. There are three rounds, with five throws per player.Steve and Annie Wyland created the facility after throwing axes on the East Coast. Steve lost his job, and the couple decided to move to San Diego.Their new project offers experiences like birthday and bachelor/bachelorette parties, and corporate outings. Five of the facility’s 11 lanes are dedicated to walk-ins. There’s also league play on Wednesday nights.If you’ve never thrown an axe, don’t worry, BattleAxe SD says.
