San Diego (KGTV) -- A local enterprise center for at-risk teens in City Heights is doing what they can to help those struggling during the pandemic. Their weekly food distribution is serving hundreds of people.The Union of Pan Asian Communities, also known as UPAC, works with at-risk teens in the City Heights community. The organization strives to lead the teens on a successful path.“We provide all the mentorship and guidance that we can for these kids to follow the right tracks but employment is such a critical feature,” says Director Dante Dauz.In 2018, the Enterprise Center was created to help the teens gain employment and entrepreneurial skills. The center consists of the “Neighborhood Cafe,” a commercial kitchen, print shop and technology center.“They are prepared to open up their own business,” says Dauz. “They’ve been instructed from top to bottom about what licenses they need, business formation, marketing plan.”When the pandemic hit, Dauz says many people in the City Heights area were in need of food.“This community was already experiencing challenges and barriers before COVID-19 hit.”UPAC distributes 6,000 pounds of food through care boxes every Friday.“In addition to the distribution boxes our cafe also pumps out roughly 1,000 hot meals for the families.”Dauz says the teens serving the families not only get a chance to better their professional skills but also give back to the City Heights community they love.“Food for the next few days isn’t going to solve all their problems but, its definitely going to help,” says Dauz. “We take a lot of pride in being able to do that.”The organization says to ensure there is enough for everyone, they encourage people to call and reserve a donation box ahead of time. 1750

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A new grant is helping a San Diego nonprofit expand its services during the coronavirus pandemic.Kitchens for Good recently got a ,000 grant from the San Diego Foundation and San Diego Gas & Electric.With the new money, Kitchens for Good is now cooking 7,000 meals each week, which local food banks give away to people in need.The meals are "heat and eat," said co-founder Aviva Paley. That helps people who can't cook or don't have a full kitchen get healthy meals."If you are a home-bound senior or someone who doesn't have a full kitchen or the capacity to cook for yourself, it can be really difficult to turn that bag of mixed match groceries into a healthy nutritious meal," said Paley.Before the pandemic, Kitchens for Good made 2,000 meals per week. The program provided job and skills training to people with troubled past, many of whom had been in prison or experienced homelessness.RELATED: San Diego program transforming lives in the kitchenThe grant is helping Kitchens for Good rehire some of their graduates who had lost jobs during the pandemic."Many of our apprentices have been on that other end of the food line; hungry, hopeless and homeless," said Paley. "This gives them an opportunity to really support someone. And they know how much food can mean to someone who's really struggling."The grant will allow Kitchens for Good to make an additional 100,000 by the end of 2020. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A San Diego County sheriff’s deputy was arrested and charged with multiple sex crimes involving minors.Chula Vista police said they received anonymous tips via Crime Stoppers on April 9, 2020, “regarding an unidentified adult male suspect, who engaged in sex acts with an underage victim. Investigators were able to identify the suspect and also determine that there were two additional underage victims.”During the probe, investigators identified the suspect, 27-year-old Jaylen Fleer, as a correctional deputy with the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department.According to CVPD officials, Fleer surrendered to investigators on Wednesday, July 22. After being processed at CVPD headquarters, he was transported to the sheriff’s Vista Jail.Jail records obtained by ABC 10News show Fleer was booked on 15 charges, including oral copulation with a person under 16, luring a minor for a sex offense, and sending harmful material to seduce a minor.Chula Vista police noted that the sheriff’s department “cooperated and assisted with the investigation.”In a statement, the San Diego Sheriff Department said that Fleer was placed on administrative assignment when the department was made aware of the possible incident and that because of the seriousness of the allegations, his authority as a peace officer was taken away. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A new mother got a big surprise when she walked into her garage in Linda Vista: A ripped fence and a missing, pricey bike.Kristen Farias had just put her 3-month-old daughter in the car early Thursday evening when she noticed her garage door was open. She and her husband have lived at the City Scene condo complex for eight years."Felt violated. Something just didn't seem right," said Farias.That something was a hole in a fence that separates her garage from her neighbor's. All of her belongings were untouched, except for something expensive: a Cannondale R500 triathlon bike - loaded with accessories - valued at some ,000."You just feel icky. Someone knows how to get into your belongings and take your stuff," said Farias.In this case the 'how' included the neighbor's garage door accidentally left open. The thief got into that garage and cut open up the shared fence. Detectives told Farias of a rash of other incidents. "Four times in the same area in the past month," said Farias.In each of the cases, the burglar somehow broke into one garage, then went to work on the fence."Just means people are lurking in the neighborhood, following you and seeing when there is an opportunity. That's scary," said Farias.Farias says the thief knew exactly what he wanted, leaving behind less expensive items. Her big fear is what could happen when the thief strikes the next time. She can't help but think she and her baby could have walked in on the burglar."Makes me sick to my stomach. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A plan to improve bike access along Harbor Drive may put pedestrians at risk.As SANDAG works to promote alternative transportation through its "Keep San Diego Moving" initiative, they plan to upgrade the Bayshore Bikeway.That includes a stretch through Barrio Logan that runs along Harbor Drive from 32nd Street to Park Boulevard.Renderings from SANDAG show a two-way bike lane protected from traffic by concrete or plants.But, plans to build the bike lanes also call for the removal of two pedestrian bridges that go over the intersection of Harbor Drive and 32nd Street. SANDAG will replace the bridges with crosswalks.Navy personnel use the bridges as they go to and from Naval Base San Diego every day.Some people who use the bridge daily say they're worried that it will lead to more accidents and dangerous conditions while trying to cross. Others say it could lead to more people jaywalking along Harbor Drive.SANDAG told 10News that safety is their top concern, and the new crosswalks will "enhance the entire intersection, including adding pedestrian pushbuttons, striped crosswalks, median landings, and other safety features."SANDAG also says they're working with the Navy and other city organizations to make sure the crosswalks are as safe as the bridges. A spokesperson for the Navy was unable to provide a comment about the project.Right now, the project is in the environmental review phase. Construction is expected to begin in the summer of 2020 and wrap up by the end of 2021. 1523
