SAN BERNARDINO (KGTV) - With their backs to the wall, facing elimination, an unforgiving heat, and trying to stave off fatigue from a rigorous schedule, the Park View Little League all-stars survived to play another game at the West Regional tournament in San Bernardino.Keyed by slugger Jose Mendoza and stellar pitching by Kainoa Baptista, the Green Monsters kept their postseason run alive while ending the Arizona Sunnyside Little League's hopes of advancing.  The squad from Chula Vista defeated Sunnyside 9-5 in an elimination game Tuesday afternoon.PVLL, which suffered its first loss of the postseason on Monday, took an early 3-0 lead on a first-inning three-run blast to right center by Mendoza.The Southern California champs broke the game open in the third inning.  Down two outs with runners on first and second, Aiden Skinner punched a deep single to right field scoring Jordan Bleisch.The long inning and blistering 108-degree heat seemed to wear down Arizona starting pitcher Cristobal Lorta.  Lorta started struggling with his form allowing Park View to extend their lead 7-0 on two wild pitches with runners on third and an RBI single to Conner Alonzo.Sunnyside's decision to keep Lorta on the mound in the fourth inning backfired when the leadoff batter, Ivan Rodriguez Jr., ripped the first pitch down the left field line for a double. Lorta then hit Mendoza and Makai Corpuz with a pitch leading to two more runs later in the inning.Arizona's last-gasp effort in their final turn at-bat shrunk Park View's lead 9-5 on a two-run homer by Jovanni Toledo but PVLL closer Atticus Gates to force a pop fly to left field for the final out.The Green Monsters won't get much time to enjoy their victory.  After playing three consecutive days in triple-digit heat, PVLL will return Wednesday night at 7 p.m. to face either Tri-City Little League of Northern California or Dixie Little League of St. George, Utah, in another elimination matchup.Park View may be favoring a match up against Tri-City.  The Green Monsters defeated the Northern California champs in a 16-8 rout that saw a grand slam and a pair of back-to-back homers from Rodriguez and Mendoza.  The winner of the West Regional advances to Williamsport, Pa., for the Little League World Series, which runs Aug. 16-26.10News' Jermaine Ong contributed to this report.-------------------------------------------NOTES  2477

SAN DIEGO — Advocates with the group Yes California aimed at splitting California have released a new plan that would establish the “autonomous Native American nation.”"The plan is to retrocede virtually all federally-owned properties in California back to its original occupants, the California Native Americans," part of a release reads. Earlier this year, advocates with the campaign began collecting signatures for the initiative.The proposed initiative is the third Calexit proposal since the election of President Donald Trump. Previous efforts were all either withdrawn of failed to gather enough signatures.The latest proposal asks voters about secession in 2020. SAN DIEGO (AP) — Otay Mesa Detention Center in San Diego was the site of the first big outbreak at U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s 221 detention centers. The origins of the outbreak are uncertain, but in interviews with The Associated Press, workers and detainees reveal shortcomings in how the private company that manages the center handled the disease: There was an early absence of facial coverings, and a lack of cleaning supplies. Symptomatic detainees were mixed with others. Some workers at the center quit; the Mexican consul general, responding to complaints from detainees, raised concerns about how the facility handled the outbreak.One guard at the facility told the Associated Press employees were discouraged from wearing masks because it would frighten detainees and make them think they were sick.According to ICE, there have been 168 detainees at Otay Mesa that have tested positive since the start of the outbreak. Four detainees are currently under isolation or monitoring and one detainee has died due to the virus.ICE adds that 11 ICE employees have also tested positive at the facility.More than 30 CoreCivic workers have tested positive, the AP reports. 1196

SAN DIEGO (AP) — A California tribe whose ancestral lands span across the U.S.-Mexico border is suing the Trump administration to block construction of a section of border wall that the Kumeyaay people say is desecrating sacred burial sites. The La Posta Band of Diegueno Mission Indians filed the lawsuit in federal court in San Diego on Tuesday seeking to temporarily halt construction of the wall until the tribe can protect its religious and cultural heritage. La Posta is one of 12 bands of the Kumeyaay people. The tribe wants its members to be able to monitor work and interrupt it to recover human remains and cultural items uncovered during construction. Federal officials did not immediately respond to a request for comment. 743

SAN DIEGO (AP) — The Marine Corps says one of its fighter jets collided in mid-air with another plane during a refueling operation in a remote desert area of Southern California.The pilot ejected and the other aircraft landed safely.Authorities say the F-35B jet collided with a Lockheed Martin KC-130J tanker around 4 p.m. Tuesday. The pilot who ejected is being treated, and nobody aboard the tanker was hurt.The jet crashed near the Salton Sea, northeast of San Diego.The big tanker landed in Thermal in neighboring Riverside County.Photos from the scene show the plane on its belly in a farm field. 610
