BEIJING, July 12 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Premier Hui Liangyu Monday urged concrete measures be taken to protect the ecological environment while building to improve living conditions as part of the country's campaign to develop its vast western regions.Hui made his remarks at the opening ceremony of the achievements exhibition displaying the western regions' environmental protection and construction accomplishments during the "West Development" campaign.The Chinese government launched the "West Development" campaign ten years ago as part of a program to narrow the gap between the country's coastal eastern region and the underdeveloped west.Statistics indicate that forest coverage has increased in the west from 10.32 percent to 17.05 percent over the past decade thanks to west regions' efforts in natural forests preservation, forestry restoration and reducing the impact of desertification.Hui called on local governments in the western regions to more effectively implement the central government's policies and decisions at the recent work meeting on West Development held on July 5 and 6.The western regions should also do its share to maintain the country's ecological security, Hui said.

ZHENGZHOU, July 2 (Xinhua) -- Three city mayors were suspended from their positions Friday after three mine accidents killed 169 people in central China's Henan Province, said the provincial authorities Friday.Li Endong, mayor of Pingdingshan City, Li Junfeng, vice mayor of the city in charge of work safety, and Shen Qinghuai, vice mayor of Luoyang City in charge of work safety, were suspended Friday, pending investigations, said the provincial committee of the Communist Party of China in a statement.Pingdingshan has seen two deadly accidents since last year. At least 49 miners died after explosives detonated at Xingdong No. 2 Mine on June 21, 2010. Another deadly gas explosion killed 76 people in the Xinhua No.4 pit in Xinhua District on Sept. 8, 2009.Luoyang City was home to a gas blast that killed 44 people in a coal pit in Yichuan County on March 31, 2010.All three mines had been ordered to suspend production before the accidents but somehow operated secretly as a result of possible negligence by the safety watchdogs.
SHANGHAI, July 15 (Xinhua) -- Argentine President Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner paid a visit here Thursday as the last leg of her China trip.Shanghai was more prosperous and beautiful now, said Kirchner, who came to the city in 2004 for the first time, in a meeting with Shanghai Mayor Han Zheng Thursday morning.Over 40 heads of states and governments from various nations had visited Shanghai since the opening of the Shanghai World Expo on May 1, Han said, adding that 15 state and government chiefs were expected to attend the closing ceremony scheduled for the end of October.Kirchner said the Expo was a "real world gathering" and reiterated Argentina's support to the event.One hundred and eighty-nine countries and fifty-seven international organizations have participated the Expo.Deeply impressed by the sound construction and administration of Shanghai, Kirchner said the cities in other countries including those of Argentina should learn from Shanghai's development."We will introduce Shanghai's experience to Argentina after this China visit," she added.Kirchner visited the Chinese and Argentine Pavilions after the meeting.She will leave Shanghai and conclude her China visit later Thursday night.
