CHULA VISTA (KGTV) - After a series of fires, Chula Vista Police have begun the process of clearing people out of the Otay Mesa River Valley. Tuesday morning, members of the CVPD Homeless Outreach Team handed out vacate notices to people living in the area. Several fires have broken out in the river bed recently, requiring large responses from local fire agencies. Chula Vista Police said after people have been moved out, they will begin clearing brush. But some drivers working for popular ride sharing services like Uber and Lyft are willing to break the law.A hidden camera, undercover investigation by Scripps station WXYZ in Detroit exposed those willing to risk children’s lives for the price of a ride.In Michigan, the law is clear: Children younger than eight or shorter than 57 inches have to be in a child safety seat.First responders say it’s a matter of life and death.“I’ve watched a child go forward, go into the windshield and have a crushed skull,” EMS paramedic Gary McMenamin said.WXYZ decided to put Uber and Lyft drivers to the test, to find out just how many were willing to ignore state law and drive a mother and her 2-year-old son without a child safety seat.Emily Gottschling and her son “Weston” hailed six rides — three to Uber and three to Lyft. Gottschling agreed to be part of the hidden camera investigation.After calling six different drivers, five of them were willing to illegally take Gottschling for a ride without a child car seat.“People have gotten in the car and never asked, so we just go,” one driver said.“If you’re alright with it, I’m okay with it,” another driver said.A different driver acknowledged the law, then said, “Well, I’ll be careful.”The last driver would not allow Gottschling into his car for fear if being ticketed. During the investigation, the drivers never actually rode anywhere and no laws were broken.Uber and Lyft both offered statements in response to the investigatiion.  1666

CINCINNATI -- Just days after calling for a national boycott of the Kroger Co., the Rev. Jesse Jackson Sr. brought his fight to the corporation's front porch.The Rainbow Push Coalition Local Steering Committee invited Jackson to Cincinnati as he continues his protest over Kroger closures in predominantly black neighborhoods. Kroger closed three unprofitable grocery stores in Memphis in February, mirroring its closure of a store in Cincinnati's Walnut Hills neighborhood last year. The company said its East McMillan Street location had lost millions of dollars over years."We wrote a letter to the leadership of Kroger, and they did not respond to us," Jackson said. "This is a pattern across the country. There are enough mouths to be fed and people to be served for Kroger to stay in the community. CINCINNATI -- On Tuesday afternoon, 16-year-old Kyle Jacob Plush called 911 panicking.Over the course of a three-minute call in which he gasped, cried repeatedly for help and struggled to communicate with the operator, he relayed that he was trapped inside his car in the parking lot of Seven Hills School."I probably don't have much time left, so tell my mom I love her if I die," he said. The call ended; when the operator attempted to call back, only a voicemail responded.A deputy sent to the scene called in soon after to report that he couldn't find anyone trapped in a van. He questioned if the call had been a prank.Plush was there. He called again."This is not a joke," he said. "I am trapped inside a gold Honda Odyssey van in the parking lot of Seven Hills. ... Send officers immediately. I'm almost dead."At several points in the second three-minute call, during which the operator does not respond and loud banging or heavy breathing can be heard, he attempts to call on the Siri automated iPhone assistant without success.Around 9 p.m., according to police, a family member discovered him dead inside the van -- a death Hamilton County Coroner Lakshmi Sammarco would rule accidental "asphyxia caused by chest compression."Something -- neither Sammarco nor Lt. Steve Saunders indicated what -- had pressed so hard against Plush's chest that he suffocated.The information released by police Wednesday afternoon did not clarify the reason the first deputy to respond was not able to find Plush's van or where Plush had been inside of it. Plush's uncle, who declined to share his name or speak on camera, said Wednesday night the 911 system failed the "great kid" who had been his nephew.Plush was a student at Seven Hills, spokeswoman Christine Hedges said Wednesday morning. CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) -- The forward rate of spread has been stopped after a fire sparked near a canyon in Chula Vista Thursday evening. The fire started around 5 p.m. in a canyon on the 400 block of Agua Vista Drive. It is in a residential area near the San Miguel Mountain Trailhead.Video from the scene showed white smoke billowing from the canyon. By 6 p.m., crews announced the forward rate of spread had stopped.Check 10News Pinpoint Weather ConditionsEvacuations were briefly ordered for Via Maggiore and Corte Premana.At this time, it’s unclear what sparked the fire.
