Right before the shooting began, Gould said he saw a man lying on a lounge chair by himself, so he invited him to join the festivities.That’s when the man, later identified as Peter Selis, pulled out his gun.The only thing Gould could do is raise his arm. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- It is a trend that happens around election time—an increase in hate crimes.“The weeks before and after, particularly the presidential elections, we do see a pretty marked increase in hate crimes,” said Leonard Trinh with the hate crime unit at the District Attorney's Office. “In 2016, the two weeks after the election were very busy. In fact, I think the busiest day for hate crimes was the day after the 2016 election. But that was true in 2012 and 2008 and before.”In June, a man was caught on cell phone video punching a Black Lives Matter demonstration in Imperial Beach. The DA’s office filed felony assault and battery charges and hate crime allegations against two men, Jeffrey Brooks and Henry Brooks Jr.In September, the St. Peter’s Chaldean Catholic Cathedral in El Cajon was vandalized with a mix of graffiti. Swastikas, “BLM,” and “Biden 2020” was spray painted on the exterior.Last month, Rabbi Yonatin Helevy said he was attacked by a teenager on a bicycle, who hit him over the head and yelled a racial slur. A 14-year-old was arrested.Trinh said as of Friday, there were 42 potential hate crime cases this year. Six of them were reported in the past few weeks. 17 people have been charged so far.He said they are currently reviewing two more potential hate crime cases that came in this weekend. “We work very with our law enforcement partners and with community leaders,” Trinh said. “We encourage them to report hate crimes and hate incidents whenever they happen.”Trinh said the pandemic has also affected the local Asian-American community. Two hate crime cases were filed in connection to anti-Asian sentiment. In the two previous years, there were no hate crimes filed involving hate against this community.Trinh explained the difference between a hate crime and hate incident.“A hate incident is the use of a racial slur or a homophobic slur or anti-Semitic slur where there’s no threat of violence directed at any person or group of people and no ability to carry out that threat,” Trinh said. A hate crime involves physical harm and actual threats.People should not dismiss hate incidents as harmless, Trinh said.“Those are still concerning because incidents are oftentimes precursors to hate crimes.” Trinh added.Imam Taha Hassane with the Islamic Center said they have seen an increase in reported hate incidents.“We’re working basically at this moment with our local law enforcement to secure our houses of worship,” Hassane said.He said they are preparing for the worst, but hoping for the best.“We don't want people to be at risk or threatened just because of this election,” Hassane said. “The whole world is watching. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Longtime San Diego State football coach Rocky Long is stepping down after nine seasons.San Diego State officials announced Wednesday that Long will be replaced by Aztecs defensive line coach Brady Hoke.Hoke was SDSU's head coach in 2009 and 2010 before leaving to become head coach at Michigan. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - In an exclusive interview with ABC10 News, a firefighter shared his heroic story of helping battle the massive fire that erupted aboard the USS Bonhomme Richard this past July.“It was a crazy situation,” said Deputy Fire Chief Robert Sepulveda with Navy Region Southwest Fire Emergency Services. “We [had] about 400-plus firefighters on-scene at the time,” he stated and added, “I was on the front lines with the firefighters and was directing the fire attack on the forward side of the ship at that time.”His first shift lasted for 30 hours. It took almost a week to knock it all down. “What I was feeling at that time was obviously fear and wanting to make sure that everyone was safe on-scene and make sure I had that command presence to be able to unify everybody,” he told ABC10 NewsHe has now received a civilian of the year award for his heroic actions.On Monday, Navy officials announced that the warship would be decommissioned after it was gutted this summer during the explosive fire at Naval Base San Diego. The Navy reported that it’s not cost effective to bring the ship back, which could require up to billion and seven years to restore.At the time of the fire, more than 60 personnel including sailors and civilians were treated for injuries like heat exhaustion and smoke inhalation.In August, ABC10 News was the first to report that the fire was being investigated as an arson and the lead suspect is a navy sailor, according to multiple sources with close ties to NCIS.To date, the Navy will only confirm that the cause is still under investigation.Sepulveda remains grateful to the many sailors who ran to help just minutes after the flames erupted. “These ships are like homes to them and to see them in action and put everything on the line to make sure that their home was safe at the end of the day [was] incredible,” he added.The time lines for towing and dismantling the decommissioned ship are still being finalized. 1973

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Immigration and Customs Enforcement issued new guidelines that could have a big impact on many international students studying in the U.S.The modifications were posted to ICE's website, outlining the new rules for students on F-1 or M-1 visas. The guidelines say students may not take a full online course load and remain in the United States and that the Department of State won't issue visas to students enrolled in programs that are fully online or allow them to enter the country. The news comes as many schools including San Diego State University and UC San Diego have moved to online only or a hybrid format because of the COVID-19 pandemic.In their modified guidelines, ICE said they had issued a temporary exemption regarding online courses for the spring and summer semesters. If a student attends a school with a hybrid model, the school must certify that the program isn't online only and that the student is only taking the minimal number of online courses.
