BOSTON, Mass. – Just a few miles away from the constant construction within downtown Boston’s skyline sits an abandoned school that’s about to get a second chance to reopen its doors. “We're doing a historic restoration of this beautiful building,” said Aileen Montour. However, the century-old building won’t be reopening as a school. Instead, it will be converted into a first for Boston: affordable housing for LGBTQ seniors. Aileen Montour is spearheading the project; one that she sees as a personal mission. “The number one concern of LGBT seniors is where are we going to live, where we can be safe and continue to be out and live our lives, not be fearful and have to go back in the closet at this point in life,” said Montour, who is with LGBTQ Senior Housing, Inc. The 74 units there will target low-income LGBTQ seniors, with rent based on a percentage of their income. However, even when all of the units are ready to move in, advocates say it will still only represent a small fraction of the affordable housing needed for the “Stonewall Generation” across the country. In the U.S., it’s estimated there will be 7 million LGBTQ seniors by the year 2030. In addition, 48% of same-sex older couples say they have experienced housing discrimination. Across the country, only about a dozen states have laws specifically prohibiting housing discrimination based on sexual orientation. “LGBT older people, much like the rest of the population, are seeking affordable housing,” said Aaron Tax, who is with SAGE, a group that focuses on advocacy and services for LGBT elders. “But on top of that they're seeking affordable housing that’s going to be welcoming, where they can be themselves.” Ideally, it’s also a place where, in their golden years, these seniors could also be helped in an environment that fosters social connections. “For example, this generation does not have kids, so there is a thought about the size of the apartments,” said Philippe Saad, the project’s architect, with the firm Dimella Shaffer. “So, what we as architects think about in this space, is being able to provide spaces and the environment that will make for these friendships, to allow for people to interact with one another.” In addition to Boston, there is also an affordable housing community for LGBTQ seniors that will be opening in New York City with 300 units.To learn more about the Boston project and LGBTQ Senior Housing, Inc., 2443

CISCO, Utah - In the Eastern Utah desert, the air is dry, and the cold is biting. Winter is coming, and the matron of town needs to prepare. “It’s good to push yourself, I think. It’s really easy to stay at home and watch movies and I think I was trying to avoid that,” said Eileen Muza, who owns Cisco, Utah. No Netflix for this woman of the wild west. Cisco, Utah, is a ghost town alright. It's an hour north of Moab, which is where you'll find the closest grocery store. It popped up in the 1880s as a saloon and filling stations for the railroad companies. Without the trains, it wouldn’t be there. Muza is the town's owner and the caretaker. “Even though everything here is sort of harsh, she’s sort of weirdly soft,” said Soren Hope, an artist staying with Muza. About five years ago, Muza bought some land, covered in old, disintegrating buildings and a few broke down automobiles. Muza wouldn't say how much land she owns or how much she paid for it, but the few parcels she owns is less than an acre and the county says it's worth less than a new car. There is running electricity, but no running water. If you need to use the facilities, you'll be using a composting toilet outside. Muza was a city girl from Chicago before relocating to Cisco. “I actually camped, I had a little tent set up. Yeah, and I was really scared, I was like totally terrified,” said Muza. But five years of living in Cisco has changed Muza. “Basically a hardened criminal at this point," Muza said. "I’m not afraid to yell at people, tell them to leave.” But don’t let that hardened exterior fool you; Muza still has a goal. She wants Cisco to be a place where people can come from all over and explore their artistic side. “It’s a really good place to stay focused on your work, because there’s not that many distractions really,” said Muza. And that’s where Hope comes in. She’s from New York. She's the only other person living in Cisco right now. “Brooklyn, and I’m here on the artist residency,” said Hope. The artist residency is something Muza and her sisters started. They let artists come out and use the space for free. In fact two of the artists a year get a 0 stipend. There's no requirement for the artists to complete anything, just use the space to create what they want. Hope has been using her time to draw. She says she wants to imprint the desert onto her brain. And she also draws sketches of the chickens. “I was only scheduled for two weeks, and then I’m just gonna stay here an extra week, and who knows, maybe I’ll never go back home,” said Hope.That’s the kind of place Muza wants to build. She wants to do it for as long as she can, but, “I hope I’ll know when I need to quit. I hope I’ll understand, if it happens.” Muza says living out there can take a toll on you. A Tennessee nurse pleads for Tennesseans to see the COVID-19 crisis through her eyes as the battle, she says, is "getting out of hand."That comes as Tennessee set two troubling new records Thursday -- a record high positivity rate of almost 20 percent and a new daily record of 93 additional deaths just reported.Nurse Emily Egan, who has worked in the COVID ICU unit at Holston Valley Medical Center in Kingsport for the past month, recorded the video diary shared by her employer, Ballad Health.“Ok, I guess, where to start? We started this fight together. We started staying at home, not going out unnecessarily, as a community. I think that everybody did really well. They fought with us.”Egan's own COVID fatigue showed in her eyes."And now I guess they’re tired of it. I guess people are tired of being alone or in their homes and want to get out and be social again."We understand the importance of mental health, but the fight is getting out of hand."As COVID hospitalizations continue to skyrocket across the state of Tennessee, she has seen the faces behind the numbers,"We’re losing more than we’re keeping," Egan said."I’ve put an ungodly amount of people in body bags that I wasn’t prepared to do, that I wasn’t prepared to give up on a patient, but there was nothing else we could do – and we lost them." Across Tennessee, hospitals are feeling the strain.Sadly, some days, the number of available ICU beds depends on the number of people dying."There’s been days that I’ve lost two patients, did their care and got them moved out to the funeral homes and had to take two right back that were equally as sick," Egan continued."I go home. I carry it home. I cry – a lot. I cry a lot. This is real, you know."Nurse Egan said that she gets that some people don't like wearing masks, that breathing through them isn't always easy."But seeing these people die that can’t breathe, it starts to take a toll on you – and you feel so frustrated that they didn’t take it serious, you know. I can’t tell you how many patients that we’ve had that they contracted it at a ballgame or at a family affair of some sort, you know, some birthday parties or dinners," Egan said.In her case, she hasn't seen her own grandparents in months -- because these days, she says, require us to all be willing to make sacrifices."I’m giving these patients my all. I’ve sat with them. I’ve held their hand as they died because family couldn’t be here," Egan said. "And it starts to hurt."And if you could just stop one case by wearing a mask or staying home when you didn’t have to go out, it would help us just so much. If everybody did that for one person, I think we could stop this."As of Thursday morning, there were just 174 ICU beds still available for the entire state. Stood up. “We got to the point where we were actually surprised that someone would actually show up on their first day [because] it got to be so frequent,” said Craig Cummings, a former restaurant manager. No show. “You go home and you wonder, what did I miss about this person,” said McNamee Ghosted. We’re not talking about dates. People aren’t showing up to their first day of work. “It’s like dating, right? Well I had coffee with you, I don’t like you, I’m going to block you. And that’s kind of how you feel like if you’re a hiring manager,” said McNamee. McNamee is a former hiring manager and now works for a payroll company in Colorado. She says she sees this all the time. “What I found, especially since the stock market has recovered, and jobs now aren’t as rare as they used to be, is there’s a lot of people out there that’ll come in, nail it on the interview. You’ll go through the hiring process, all the paperwork and then their first day they will not show up.” She’s right. Unemployment is at 3.5 percent, the lowest it’s been since in 50 years. That means some employers can’t find someone to take a job. Searching for a new hire can be a little bit like dating, you never know exactly what you’re going to get, it’s expensive, and they may not even show up. I went to a job fair and asked people looking for work if they’d ever consider doing this to a potential employer. “If I had a job offer in hand that I’d accepted," said Julie Ziobro who's looking for a job. “Absolutely not,” said Nathaniel Diamond, a job seeker. I come from a generation, and I grew up, making phone calls, don’t text,” said Cummings. “I definitely wouldn’t do it without communicating; that’s not fair,” said Ziobro. “Just let them know, like, 'Hey, I got a job that better suits my skill set, and I’m going to take that one instead,'” said Joshua Curry, a job seeker.No one was ready to admit they’d leave an employer hanging out to dry. But it doesn’t mean there are no other signs. “We really want to take a look at their job history to look at, are they a job hopper? Are they moving around every three months or every six months with different companies. To me that would signal someone is always looking for that next best thing,” says Keely Teynor, who runs her own hiring firm. Teynor says there are a few things employers can do, including looking at someone’s job history. “Even in this really tight labor market, the unemployment rate is so low, we kind of have to find this nice balance of having multiple steps in the process to show they’re really invested and interested in this opportunity,” she says.She says that process helps her avoid the dreaded no show on an employee’s first day. McNamee can still remember the sting of being stood up. “People are excited to have new hires come in and be a part of your team," she says.
