BEIJING, April 24 (Xinhua) -- The Chinese government has ordered food companies to keep clear and intact records of all their production and selling operations as part of the efforts to prevent the illegal use of food additives.All food manufacturing and management companies must examine all products in stock for any trace of illegal food additives and keep records of the results in accordance with laws and regulations, according to a circular released Sunday by the food safety committee under the State Council, or China's Cabinet.The circular came days after Vice Premier Li Keqiang warned of the great harm from illegal additives in food, promising "a firm attitude, iron-hand measures and more efforts" in dealing with the problem.Companies that fail to keep genuine and intact records and documents will be ordered to reform, and those providing fake records and certificates will be suspended from operations and punished accordingly, said the circular.According to the circular, it is strictly forbidden to produce and sell non-edible materials that are likely to be used in food production without official certificates, and authorized production companies of these materials must adopt a real-name selling system.These materials, including those banned in animal feed and drinking water, should not be sold to food and feed companies, the circular added.A series of food safety scandals emerged in China recently. In one of the latest cases, steamed buns in Shanghai were reported, last week, to have been dyed, sold past their expiration date, or laced with coloring additives to mislead consumers.

BEIJING, Feb. 21 (Xinhua) -- China's domestic air travelers, as well as international passengers in and out of China, will be the biggest boost to airline industry growth over the next four years, according to an industry outlook report by the International Air Transport Association (IATA) Monday.Of the world's expected 800 million new travelers by 2014, about 181 million new passengers will come from China's domestic air routes, while another 33 million will be passengers flying to or from China via international routes, IATA said.China's 181 million domestic air passengers growth will lift the country's domestic passenger throughput to 379 million by 2014, only behind the United States in the world's aviation traveler volume ranking, according to IATA.The United States will remain the largest single country market for domestic passengers, with 671 million domestic air travelers and international passengers by then, according to IATA's forecast.The world's air travelers will top 3.3 billion by 2014, up by 800 million from the 2.5 billion in 2009, while world air cargo will rise to 38 million tonnes from 26 million tonnes in 2009."The forecast indicates that the world will continue to become more mobile. This creates enormous opportunities but also presents some challenges," Giovanni Bisignani, IATA' s Director General and CEO, said in the outlook report."We will need even more efficient air traffic management, airport facilities and security programs," he said, adding the shadow of the global economic recession is expected to remain over parts of the industry for some time to come.He said lingering consumer debt, high unemployment and austerity measures will dampen growth rates in Europe and North America, shifting the industry's focus eastwards.By 2014, 1 billion people will travel by air in the Asia-Pacific region, accounting for 30 percent of the global total, up from 26 percent in 2009, he added.

SYDNEY, May 27 (Xinhua) -- A toddler and a policeman have become the latest victims of a rare and potentially deadly mosquito-borne disease in Western Australia (WA), local media reported on Friday.The two-year-old child contracted Murray Valley encephalitis (MVE) in the Kimberley of WA and is now in Royal Darwin Hospital in a stable condition, according to Australian Associated Press (AAP).The 29-year-old police officer, who was recently contracted the disease at an Aboriginal community of WA, has emerged from a coma in a Perth hospital but is still unable to communicate.It is not known if the victims from WA's far north will fully recover.In April 2011, a man who had been traveling in WA's northwest became the first person in the state to die from the disease in three years.A 19-year-old Canadian tourist also died after contracting MVE while traveling through the Northern Territory earlier in May.A WA Health Department spokeswoman said nine West Australians had contracted MVE so far in 2011. JERUSALEM, March 31 (Xinhua) -- Two researchers at the Hebrew University (HU) of Jerusalem have been honored with a prestigious award for their study of the connection between several inflammatory diseases, cancer and bacteria.Medical faculty members, Dr. Eli Pilarsky and Prof. Sigal Ben- Yehuda, won this year's Sir Zelman Cowen Universities Fund prize that recognizes significant achievement in the field of medicine.The prize committee noted the impressive contributions of Pilarsky and Ben-Yehuda in understanding complex diseases like cancer and antibiotic-resistant infections, and, in a first, decided to award the two scientists this year.Pilarsky told Xinhua that his research deals with the connection between chronic inflammatory diseases like hepatitis, and the development of cancer cells."The relevance of this discovery is that we were able to establish the link between the molecules secreted with such inflammations and the proliferation of cancer cells," Pilarsky explained, noting that "we discovered that the inflammation favors the cancer cells' growth, and now we are trying to find a way to manipulate these molecules to stop the cancer cells from appearing. ""The importance of these findings lies in the fact that 20 percent of the world's cancer cases are attributed to inflammation processes," Pilarsky pointed out.
