(KGTV) - An Escondido family was surprised with a life-changing gift Tuesday morning, brand new appliances for their home.The gift was made possible through a partnership between the Boys & Girls Club of America and Maytag.“When I heard my name I was speechless, I was overwhelmed," said Rosie Montejano. "I thought I was being tricked, but then I was like, no it’s us, it’s us!"Montejano's children attend the Escondido Boys & Girls Club after-school program.“The security that my kids get picked up, they’re watched, and I don’t have to worry about who’s watching my children," said Montejano.She explains it's been a difficult few years, with her older daughter battling addiction. The family adopted her daughter's two children, so now they take care of five.While Montejano can't donate financially to the Boys & Girls Club, she donates her time. She also asks her employer Walmart to donate goods to the Club whenever they can.Last year Danny Sherlock, President & CEO of Boys & Girls Club of Greater San Diego, won the Maytag Dependable Leader Award, which allowed him the opportunity to pay it forward to others.Montejano's generosity never went unnoticed by branch manager Dave Luevanos, who nominated her for the Maytag donation made possible through Sherlock's leadership award."I feel truly blessed today, and I am overwhelmed," said Montejano.She's looking forward to having a new refrigerator and washer and dryer in time for the holidays. 1495

ENCINITAS, Calif. (KGTV) -- Video from a witness shows a driver slamming into a crowd outside an Encinitas bar early Sunday morning. In the video, a U-Haul van can be seen accelerating onto a sidewalk. Video shows pedestrians leaping out of the way before the vehicle crashes into the crowd. In a Monday news release, the San Diego County Sheriff's Department said one person is in an intensive care unit while another is undergoing surgery with serious injuries following the crash. The department says a 24-year-old victim is in an intensive care unit while a 25-year-old is in surgery with serious injuries. All three of the victims were struck when the suspect, Christian Davis, 28, reportedly drove the van onto a sidewalk outside The Saloon Bar around 1:30 a.m. Sunday. Two others received minor injuries when they detained Davis outside the bar. Deputies say Davis was asked to leave the bar because he was too intoxicated. After complying with the request, deputies say Davis got into the van, intentionally driving it onto the sidewalk. Davis was later arrested and is being charged with three counts of attempted murder and one count of attempted escape with force. Davis is scheduled to be arraigned in Vista on March 3. (KGTV) -- Police in Escondido are joining law enforcement throughout the state in cracking down on distracted driving throughout April.Throughout the month, the city is deploying extra traffic officers thanks to grant-funded resources. Violators will be stopped and cited with fines set at 2 for first-time offenders.On April 5 and April 13, law enforcement officials all over the state are set to step up distracted driving enforcement.According to authorities, officers have issued hundreds of thousands of citations over the past three years to those texting or calling while driving.Recent legislation has even gone as far as to make it illegal to use a smartphone’s apps while driving."California’s distracted driving laws have been saving lives for a decade now,” said former State Senator Joe Simitian, who authored the state’s hands-free and no-texting laws. “Every day, somewhere in California, someone is sitting down to dinner with their family who wouldn't have made it through the day without these laws on the books. That’s tremendously gratifying.”Data from 2017 shows that nearly 22,000 were involved in distracted driving crashes throughout California.“Traffic safety has consistently been a top priority in Escondido,” said Chief Craig Carter. “If our enforcement and education campaign to eliminate distracted driving saves even one life, I would consider that a success.” 1420

ESCONDIDO, Calif. (KGTV) - Escondido Police announced Saturday the arrest of a 13-year-old boy in a case involving Xanax overdoses at Rincon Middle School.Six children aged 11 to 13 years were found to have taken the anti-anxiety drug at lunch time on October 25.Three of the children required emergency medical treatment.  All six have since recovered with no lasting effects.RELATED: Juveniles hospitalized after taking XanaxEscondido Police arrested the juvenile suspect Monday after an investigation.
