SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego Police have released video footage of an officer-involved shooting involving a man who was arrested and reportedly stole a gun out of an officer's backpack Sunday.The footage includes bodycam video from officers inside the police station's sally port, as well as surveillance footage of the parking area.Police say a 25-year-old Hispanic man, later identified as Keith Bergman, was arrested shortly after 6:20 p.m. after an incident at a downtown San Diego hotel on Sunday. A hotel security guard reported the man was “acting strange” and threatening others.Bergman was evaluated for being under the influence and arrested, according to SDPD. Police say they found methamphetamine and five credit cards that didn't belong to him in his pockets.See the video in the player above (If the video doesn't appear below, click here)Officers brought Bergman to SDPD headquarters. Just after 8 p.m., police said the suspect somehow freed one hand from his handcuffs while inside the patrol SUV, and then broke a divider that separates the prisoner seat area from the cargo area.Police said Bergman found an officer’s backpack that contained a backup handgun. When officers returned to check on the suspect, he was still in the vehicle but armed with a gun, according to SDPD.Officers drew their weapons and gave Bergman verbal commands to drop the weapon, but he refused and fired at least one round from the gun, police said.The officers felt threatened, police said, and at least one round was fired at Bergman, hitting him in the torso.Bergman reached out of the vehicle's window and opened the door to exit while he was still armed, police said, adding that he tried to open the rear cargo compartment of the SUV and the driver's door, refusing orders to stop in the process.RELATED: San Diego Police: Suspect shot by officers after finding officer's gun in patrol SUVPolice eventually released a service dog to subdue Bergman, and police moved in to arrest him.Officers provided first aid at the scene and Bergman was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries, according to SDPD.San Diego Police also identified the three officers involved in the shooting as Paul Yi, a six-year veteran of the department, Michael Rodriguez, who has been with the department for 10 months, and Timothy Arreola, an eight-year veteran of the department. After the department's Homicide Unit completes its investigation, the San Diego County District Attorney’s Office will look at the incident to determine if the officers bear any criminal liability for their actions. The Internal Affairs Unit will also conduct an investigation, and the Shooting Review Board will evaluate the tactics used by the officers. The Community Review Board on Police Practices will conduct a review of the incident and provide any appropriate recommendations. The Federal Bureau of Investigations and the United States Attorney’s Office will also monitor the investigation. 2982

If we get off the state’s watchlist Friday, kids would be allowed back in-person in as soon as two weeks.But, some districts tell ABC 10News they would still need more time.Supervisor Nathan Fletcher hinted at a victory for the county Thursday afternoon.“Yesterday we were below the state guidance, today we’re below the state guidance,” said Fletcher. “Tomorrow if we’re below the state guidance that will remove us from the state monitoring list.”RELATED: San Diego County case rate under watch list threshold for second straight dayThose metrics are based on having fewer than 100 cases per 100,000 residents over two weeks. They tell us over the six-week period they did not have a single case of COVID-19.Superintendent David Miyashiro says even if the county can welcome students back, they would still need time to prepare.“To say we’d be able to open right away, I don’t feel comfortable with that,” said Miyashiro. “The short answer is as soon as possible starting with our most vulnerable students.”San Diego Unified says they’re using their own criteria that goes beyond the state standards. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego Police have made an arrest in the death of a 20-year-old in the Bay Terraces area last year.Police said 26-year-old John Orozco was arrested Wednesday for the murder of Joaquin Ruiz of San Diego.On July 12, 2019, Ruiz was found in a vehicle off the side of the road just before midnight in the 7000 block of Paradise Valley Rd. He was suffering from a bullet wound to his upper body.Police began first aid at the scene, but Ruiz died of his injuries on the way to the hospital.The investigation into Orozco is ongoing, and no other details surrounding his arrest or involvement in the murder were released.SDPD asked that anyone who may have information related to the case to call the department's Homicide Unit at 619-531-2293 or Crime Stoppers at 888-580-8477. 800

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego Police have released officer bodycam footage of a fatal shooting involving a man in Mountain View earlier this month.San Diego Police say 39-year-old Jose Alfredo Castro-Gutierrez was shot and killed after officers responded to the 300 block of South Pardee Street just before 5 a.m. on Oct. 19 over reports of a violent disturbance involving a weapon.According to police, Castro-Gutierrez was staying at a home as a guest when the residents were woken up by him. He had reportedly been acting paranoid and ripped a metal curtain rod from a window and began breaking windows and other objects in the home.Video shows Castro-Gutierrez crawl through a window in the front of the home and run toward police, before officers fired their weapons and fatally struck him. A metal pole was found near him.Three officers fired at Castro-Gutierrez: One officer fired a bean bag round, another officer fired a Taser, and a third officer fired several rounds from his service pistol, SDPD says.Officers started first aid at the scene, but Castro-Gutierrez was pronounced dead at the hospital. The officer who fired his service pistol was identified as Isai Castillo, a two-year veteran of SDPD assigned to Southeastern Division.Gene Iredale, the attorney who represents Castro’s family, says they are planning to file a wrongful death action. He says the lethal force was not warranted.“This was a tragic combination of negligence and callousness that led to a needless death,” Iredale said.Iredale says his client leaves behind a wife and a one-year-old child. He says Castro is a Mexican citizen and a legal resident of the U.S. His wife lives in Mexicali, but Castro has been working and renting locally.He says Castro also has a history of mental illness.“This was a person in a mental health crisis and was paranoid,” Iredale said. “His last word as he rushed towards the officers was ‘ayuda,’ ‘help me’”In a recorded video statement provided to ABC 10News by Iredale, Castro’s wife was emotional, saying the family is shocked at what happened, calling her husband’s death an injustice.
