RICHMOND, Va. -- Markeisha Harris-Minor is a young entrepreneur who has always considered herself to be a resource to people. And she has always wanted to do it, as she says, on a macro level.So, last December, she came up with an idea for a new app she calls Blocal Search.What is it?“This is a nationwide directory and app for locating Black-owned businesses all across the country," Harris-Minor, CEO of Blocal Search, said.Harris-Minor said she was constantly seeing the Black dollar recycle in front of her eyes. That’s why she said it was important for her to find an avenue that would allow the money to stay in local neighborhoods, especially in a moment in time where a demand to support Black businesses is on the rise.“Because we all know that buying Black right now, it’s something that’s important. It may look more trendy or what have you, but I want to make sure I’m pushing it to be a lifestyle, so just kind of changing that focus and perspective, like why am I really buying Black?” she said.Ajay Brewer, owner of Brewer’s Café on the city’s south side, added his business to Blocal Search this year.“I’ve had several people tell me that they’ve found me through Blocal, so any sort of search engine that creates that sort of awareness for us is really priceless. It’s created revenue for Brewer’s Café for sure," Brewer said.Harris-Minor said she has over 150 local businesses -- like restaurants, juice bars, beauty supplies, family dentistry, and more -- in the app.The number is even higher nationwide. Roughly six percent of the male population - and less than one percent of the female population - suffer from colorblindness.It isn’t a deficiency that is debilitating, but it can be frustrating.For 11-year-old Andreas Koerber, reds and greens are mixed up, blues and purples are difficult to differentiate. The world, as he sees it, is generally more drab.The North Olmsted, Ohio sixth-grader and his family didn’t know there was a fix, until recently.Now, his eyes are open to an entirely new world after the discovery of specialized glasses.“Everything is more colorful, it’s brighter, it’s not as dark,” Andreas said.He realized he was colorblind at age five. It’s one of the biggest differences between him and his twin brother Luke. Luke is the one who had the idea to surprise Andreas with the glasses after learning about them online.“He’s my brother and really, it doesn’t feel fair that I get to see all the colors and he doesn’t,” Luke said. “I didn’t really realize how bad it was and what he wasn’t seeing.”For mom Rita Koerber, watching Andreas see colors for the first time was eye-opening.“It was just this totally special, emotional moment,” Rita said. "Kind of like Christmas when you have little kids and you’re seeing that through their eyes and they’re so excited, it was like that."The glasses run upwards of 0 and are not covered by insurance. After trying them on at Eyetique in Eton Center, Rita immediately had them special-ordered.“It’s like, how do you put a price tag on that? RIPON, Wisconsin — An assistant professor at a Wisconsin college is getting national attention for the research she just published about a dog's empathy for its owner.The idea came to Ripon College's Julia Meyers-Manor when her collie tried to save her mom from a pile of pillows when she was just playing with her children.In her study, Meyers-Manor observed whether dogs would open a door if their "trapped" owner was on the other side crying or humming, and if so, how much of an effort they would make to "rescue" the person. She also recorded the dogs' heart rate variability.Meyers-Manor said dogs can "feel" your emotions. One dog named Molly rammed through the door and leaped into her owner's arms."If we're distressed they become distressed," Meyers-Manor said.The animals, however, had a hard time deciphering whether the human was being truthful."In the crying condition the dogs basically ran in, and if they did, they did it within 20 seconds," said the assistant professor.About 50 percent of the dogs rammed through the door. Meyers-Manor said the other half did not because they were too stressed over what they saw and heard."Dogs were pacing, whining, showing all types of stress behaviors by their owner's distress," said Meyers-Manor. "So they start to shut down and freeze from opening the door."To many people's surprise, she found service K-9's in the study performed no different than any other pooch.None of the more than 30 animals were hurt in this study.You can read the assistant professor's published research by clicking here. 1596

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — California Democratic Party Chairman Eric Bauman was accused of inappropriate behavior on a campaign bus days before the Nov. 6 election, a Democratic official said Tuesday, a day after Bauman took a leave of absence.Bauman was among those aboard a bus during a statewide get-out-the-vote tour. Two young women on the bus reported alcohol was consumed and inappropriate sex talk occurred on Nov. 1, said David Campos, chairman of the San Francisco Democratic Party.The bus was scheduled to arrive in San Francisco the next day at an event with U.S. House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi. Her campaign team learned of the incidents aboard the bus and told state party officials that Bauman and the bus should stay away, Campos said.It appeared Bauman engaged in the misbehavior and did not intervene to stop others from acting inappropriately, Campos said.RELATED: Top California Democrat on leave amid sex misconduct inquiry"We felt, and I felt, it was important for us, given we had serious credible allegations, not to have Chair Bauman attend this get-out-the-vote event in San Francisco," said Campos, who first shared details of the allegations with the Bay Area Reporter, a publication serving the LGBT community. He provided no details on the allegations. Campos said he doesn't know if Larimore-Hall's letter relates to the alleged incident on the bus or something else, but he said he was not aware of any allegations of sexual assault on the bus."We did not hear anything about possible sexual assault," he said.Larimore-Hall did not respond to multiple emails and a phone message from The Associated Press Tuesday. Jorge Aguilar, executive director of Pelosi's campaign, and Bauman did not immediately respond to emails seeking comment.In a statement Monday announcing Bauman's leave, party spokesman Mike Roth said "Bauman believes this decision is the best way to ensure the independence and integrity of the process.
