ESCONDIDO, Calif. (KGTV) - Surveillance video captured a man in a truck treating an Escondido neighborhood like a dumping ground. In the video, a white truck pulls up in the 800 block of North Citrus Avenue just before 1 p.m.  The driver goes to the back and casually pulls the couch onto the street, before going back to the truck to toss out a piece of carpet. He then drives off."Just makes our neighborhood look bad and ugly, and we don't want that," said Gil Gomez who lives feet from where the couch was dumped. His frustrations growing every time he watches the video, recorded from his Ring camera. That's because the truck appears to be a newer model Ford F-150."If you can afford to buy a brand new truck, you can afford to get rid of this thing properly," said Gomez.Gomez fears this type thing could attract more dumping."It might happen around the corner next time. That is the type of culture we cannot stand for," said Gomez.Gomez posted the video on the Neighbors by Ring app to track the person down and to send a message to would-be dumpers. "Not in our neighborhood. This is not that type of neighborhood," said Gomez. After 10News contacted Escondido's Public Works Department, the couch was picked up Tuesday afternoon. If you have any information on the case, call Escondido police at 760-839-4722. 1339

Every morning, Philip Staroska starts his day by logging onto his computer and wishing his class of kindergarten students in Phoenix, Arizona a good morning. The spiking COVID-19 cases have kept this life-long educator out of the classroom for longer than he could’ve ever imagined. There are days when all Staroska wants to do is give his students a hug or a high five, but instead, a virtual pat on the back over Zoom has to suffice.“I would give anything to give my kids a high five, a hug, to be able to be like, ‘hey, come on, focus.’ It’s a lot more powerful in-person than over the screen,” Staroska said. And yet, for as much as he longs to be in the classroom, Staroska knows with COVID-19 cases reaching record-high levels in his county, keeping kids and their families safe is taking precedent right now.“I would love for it to be a normal school year, but it’s not,” he added. It’s been long, challenging year for teachers like Staroska across the country. Regardless of whether learning is occurring in-person or virtually, many educators are worried the pressures of the pandemic are dramatically impacting student’s academic progress.“It’s just not the same as being in the classroom,” Staroska said. His sentiments are shared by other teachers and administrators, trying their best to navigate the challenges of learning during a pandemic. In Nashville, Tennessee, Dr. Kenyae Reese, a high school principal, is worried about the emotional impact this year is having on her high school students. In many cases, students are now taking part-time jobs to help parents who may have lost their jobs due to the pandemic.“We’re seeing high school kids who have to watch little siblings because their parents are out of work. It’s then juggling being a student, but I also have to monitor a younger sister or brother. There’s a lot more responsibility,” the principal said.“Sometimes kids are working during the day because they may be one of the breadwinners, especially right now,” she added.Another concern: attendance, especially among students who are starting to experience burnout.“Even kids who are super strong with social media and technology are struggling. We just didn’t anticipate having to go this long.” 2230

ESCONDIDO, Calif. (CNS) - A motorcyclist was traveling at high speed when he collided with a pick-up truck on Interstate 15 in Escondido and was thrown into traffic lanes, where he was struck by multiple vehicles, the California Highway Patrol reported Monday. The CHP is seeing witnesses to the collision, which occurred about 9:55 p.m. Sunday near Via Rancho Parkway.A 48-year-old man from Chula Vista was riding a Harley Davidson Softail on the Centre City Parkway on-ramp to the southbound I-15 at a high rate of speed, according to CHP Officer Mark Latulippe. As the motorcyclist transitioned from the ramp onto the freeway, he sideswiped a Toyota Tundra traveling in the far right lane, the officer said. The initial contact between the Toyota and the Harley Davidson caused the motorcyclist to lose control, and the rider to be ejected, he said. Before emergency personnel arrived at the scene, multiple vehicles struck the motorcyclist, who was pronounced dead at the scene. He was not immediately identified. 1022

Federal Communications Commission Chairman Ajit Pai, a Republican, says he is leaving the telecommunications regulator on Inauguration Day. President-elect Joe Biden will choose a new Democratic head for the agency. A new administration typically picks a new chairman. The FCC typically has three commissioners of the majority party and two in the minority party. It currently has two Democratic commissioners, Jessica Rosenworcel and Geoffrey Starks, one of whom Biden could choose to elevate to chairman or choose someone from outside the agency.Pai and another Republican commissioner, Michael O’Rielly, are leaving the agency. O’Rielly is leaving because the White House pulled his nomination after he said he wasn’t sure the agency had authority on Section 230. Congress is weighing the nomination of another Republican, Nathan Simington.Pai has presided over a contentious FCC. He undid net neutrality rules that barred internet service providers like Comcast and AT&T from favoring some types of online traffic over others in 2017 and championed other deregulatory efforts. The incoming FCC is likely to try to reinstate net neutrality rules and focus on getting internet service to more Americans. They will likely not act on a recent directive from the Trump administration to look at Section 230 in an effort to regulate social media companies like Facebook and Twitter. Section 230 shields internet companies from lawsuits about posts by users. The Trump administration has gone after the law, alleging with no evidence that social networks censor conservatives. Pai had recently said the FCC could move forward making rules around Trump's directive about looking at Section 230. 1702
