SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Five people who witnessed a potentially deadly situation were honored by the California Highway Patrol Friday to taking action that helped save a man's life.Dennis McNea is a driver for the Freeway Service Patrol. His job is to help stranded motorists. But Nov. 13, 2019, he was driving on State Route 94 when he suffered a medical emergency. "Almost hit me," said witness Gina de la Torre, a Navy sailor who was on her way home at the time. "And as I saw him, he was hitting the highway barrier and I noticed that he was slumped over in his car."RELATED: Community helps man devoted to keeping park cleanAnother witness, Alberto Robles, used his own truck to make contact with McNea's, slowing them both down to a stop. The other four, including de la Torre, stopped to help. "They just kind of stopped and looked at me like, 'What do we do?'" she told 10News. "So that's when I was like, okay, keep calm and just do whatever you have to do."They performed CPR until medics arrived. "I don't remember what happened to me at all," McNea said. "I woke up in the hospital a couple of days later. I was told what happened."RELATED: San Diego Police honor boy who risked life to save brother from drowningMcNea said it was emotional when he finally got the chance to meet each of his rescuers at a ceremony put on by CHP Friday. "A million thanks is not enough. They gave me a lottery ticket. They gave me life. You can have a billion dollars, but you can't buy life, and they gave me life," McNea said.McNea has since returned to work. He says he plans to take CPR training so he can provide the same life-saving support he received to others in need. 1675

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Hours after Navy officials said all fires aboard the USS Bonhomme Richard were extinguished, smoke was visible coming from the vessel at Naval Base San Diego early Friday morning.Radio scanner traffic obtained by ABC 10News indicated crews at the scene reported at least two fires onboard the ship and called for evacuations at around 1 a.m. Friday. The 10News Breaking News Tracker observed smoke coming from the ship’s front end.At around 5 a.m., a Navy spokesperson confirmed to ABC 10News that no evacuations were ordered and all fires were out. The spokesperson said investigators were looking into the matter. On Thursday afternoon, Navy officials said all known fires aboard the USS Bonhomme Richard were declared out. The blaze on the ship erupted on the morning of July 12, and the firefighting efforts involving hundreds of crew members and thousands of aerial water drops took four full days.Navy officials said they will not know the exact cause of the fire until the ship can be inspected fully.ABC 10News learned Chief of Naval Operations Adm. Mike Gilday will be at Naval Base San Diego on Friday to inspect the USS Bonhomme Richard.During a Thursday afternoon press briefing, Rear Adm. Philip Sobeck described the 22-year-old ship as ravaged -- its melted aluminum superstructure bent at a 45-degree angle -- but not dead in the water."The ship can be repaired," he said. "Whether or not it will be repaired will be determined."A total of 40 sailors and 23 civilian firefighters suffered various minor injuries, mostly heat exhaustion and smoke inhalation, while taking part in the battle to defeat the blaze, Navy officials said. The Bonhomme Richard is the third warship in U.S. naval history to bear the name, which means "Good Man Richard" in French and honors Benjamin Franklin's "Poor Richard's Almanac."The vessel has been homeported at Naval Base San Diego since the spring of 2018, when it returned from a six-year port switch to Sasebo, Japan, while becoming the command ship for Navy Expeditionary Strike Group Seven.City News Service contributed to this report 2114

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – Food insecurity is something far too familiar for those serving in the military and for their families. Feeding San Diego is helping bridge the hunger gap in hopes of making it easier for active-duty military, their families, and veterans to get the food they need and deserve. Desiree Mieir is a mom of four. Her husband is currently serving his tenth year in the Navy. She says the high cost of living in San Diego makes it tough to survive here. "It's several dollars of a difference as far as gas goes. Milk, eggs, all your basic necessities," said Mieir. "If we want to go on a day trip, we have to make room in the budget for that." Now, every month, the family gets access to free food at Dewey Elementary School, one of Feeding San Diego's distribution sites. The access gives families some financial relief without compromising the kid's nutrition. Donate now to Month of a Million Meals"We joke that we have four fruit bats in the house, so anytime they get fruit, they are just over the moon," Meier said. Feeding San Diego continues to food insecurity for those in the military, so more families like the Meier's can succeed."This program gives us a chance to catch our breath," Meier said. "Families like mine and others will use this food to help them carry out their day and be able to thrive." 1336

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Drive through any neighborhood in San Diego these days, and you’re bound to see homes decked out for the holidays. This time of year also can signal a slowdown in the real estate market - and an opportunity for buyers.Germaine LaValade took advantage, and is about to own his first home. He’s in escrow for a four-bedroom home in North Pacific Beach, listed for .17 million. LaValade, a software engineer, said a big reason the seller chose him was because the sale would close before the end of the year for tax purposes.“Because we are renters right now we didn’t have any house to sell to buy this one,” LaValade said.A motivated seller is just one of the advantages a homebuyer may have in these winter months - far removed from peak summer season. Another help - interest rates, which have been on the rise, tend to soften as activity slows nationwide.“We’re seeing a lot of prices are coming down from the all-time highs that they were,” said San Diego realtor Gary Kent. “We’re probably off as much as 5 percent from the peak, peak, peak of the market.”But prices are still high in San Diego County. In October, the median sale price was 0,000, up more than 5 percent from a year earlier. While activity is thought to slow, San Diego realtor Michelle Silverman said some of her best months have been in December. She said buyers get a little more leverage, while sellers still capitalize on low inventory. Silverman believes anyone involved now is also probably for real.“When you have serious buyers you have homes that will close,” she said. “You have sellers that are ready to negotiate and are willing to maybe give a little bit more that they wouldn’t give before, but they want it sold."Still, San Diego’s weather is good enough to shop for homes year-round.“You can close in January and get a good value on a home due to the decreased demand in December,” Kent said. The San Diego Association of Realtors reports roughly 7,300 active listings in the county in December, up about 80 percent from a year earlier. 2055
