CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) - What started as a donation to help hospital heroes has blossomed into an ongoing relationship. The San Diego chapter of the North American Taiwanese Women’s Association makes a point to help in any natural disaster. While they usually would step up to help with something like hurricane relief, they made it a point to help with the pandemic.A woman connected to the group who also works at Sharp Chula Vista told the seamstresses that the medical workers at her hospital were in need of caps, so the ladies got to work. They made a batch of caps to donate, and haven’t put down their sewing machines since.Every time the ladies make a batch of caps, the medical staff take a picture with the items and send it back to the creators.“We love seeing those smiles from the medical professionals and we feel like we are really doing something for them because they work so hard for the community,” said Chunmei Carol Lin, President of the Taiwanese American Foundation of San Diego.Since the start of the pandemic, the seamstresses have more than 1,000 caps for the Sharp Chula Vista staff, as of September. (KGTV) -- The City of Chula Vista is teaming up with local high schools to help beautify one of its most important corridors.Students from High Tech High began painting a mural Tuesday on a business near Broadway and E Street, the first of five new student-painted murals planned along the Broadway corridor this year.Broadway is the highest revenue-producing corridor in the city, said Chula Vista councilmember Jill Galvez, but a 2019 survey by the Institute for Public Strategies highlighted community concerns with graffiti and vandalism. In the survey of 160 businesses along Broadway, more than 70 percent said graffiti and vandalism were a top concern.Galvez challenged high schools to paint city utility boxes last year and says it’s been successful at deterring graffiti.“Artists respect other artists’ work,” she said.“We’ve already seen the delight of people driving by to see beautiful artwork. It brightens your day. This is going to be the first of many projects along Broadway,” she added.In addition to High Tech High, she said Castle Park High School, Chula Vista High School, Hilltop High School and MAAC Community Charter School are working on murals.Two classes of seniors led by art teacher Chelsea Smith. She said students came up with designs then voted on their favorites as a class. (KGTV) — A Chula Vista man says he got a screeching, costly surprise after he started his car Wednesday morning.Along Regency Way, just before 6:30 a.m., Jimmy got into his Toyota Corolla S, which was parked in the street."Started the car. As I was pulling out, felt my car lurch to the side," said Jimmy, who asked us not to use his last name.The lurch came amid the most awful of noises."Pretty much like a crash ... felt the scraping of my rotor on the asphalt ... and then pretty much my car slammed into the asphalt itself. Traumatized and scared of what happened," said Jimmy.His heart sank as he got out and stared at the driver's side wheels, which had fallen off."My lug nuts were completely missing, all ten of them on the left side," said Jimmy.His repair estimate: a staggering ,500. He's insured with a 0 deductible. "Every little cost affects you. It matters," said Jimmy.Jimmy's vehicle was not the only target. Two blocks away the same morning, another driver shared a similar fate because of stolen lug nuts. A member of the HOA board for the nearby condos told 10news that a month ago, there were reports of a car with loosened lug nuts. The motive of the incidents remain unknown. Jimmy doesn't believe he was personally targeted, but he's fearful the thief will be back at it again. "It could have cost my life or another driver's life. CINCINNATI – Charles Adams went on a rampage before he died in police custody Wednesday, acting wildly and damaging residents’ property at a Westwood apartment complex, according to a resident and 911 callers."It was bizarre, so bizarre," India Lavender told Scripps station WCPO in Cincinnati.Lavender said the 36-year-old Adams jumped on her car and then jumped into her neighbor’s window."(Somebody) came and knocked on my door and told me there was a man standing on top of my car," Lavender said.  “I came out. He yelled at me and told me to call the police, somebody was chasing him,  and he literally jumped off my car into my neighbor's window."Adams damaged at least five others cars while calling out for help as he went along, residents said.“It definitely seemed as if he was hallucinating,” Lavender said. “In his mind, someone really was chasing him, 'cause he was trying to get everyone else in the building to see the other people that weren’t there."Body camera video of Adams' arrest shows him becoming increasingly lethargic and unresponsive after officers put him in handcuffs. At one point, while standing, he slumps forward until he is nearly bent double.When officers escort him outside and allow him to sit down against a railing, he begins to drool and twitch before losing consciousness. "Jeez," one officer says in the recording. "He's foaming at the mouth."His breathing stopped shortly after his eyes closed.The fire department gave Adams first aid, including CPR, but he died on the scene.It’s unclear what brought Adams to the apartment complex. Neighbors said they had never seen him."Officers did not use any type of force to subdue Mr. Adams during the arrest activity," Lt. Stephen Saunders, Cincinnati police public information officer, said in the statement.
