SAN FRANCISCO, June 13 (Xinhua) -- Google on Monday confirmed that it had signed an agreement to buy Admeld, an on-line advertising optimization firm, in a deal seen as the Internet search giant's latest move to bolster its on-line display ad business.Admeld, launched in 2007 and headquartered in New York City, has developed a service that can help on-line publishers manage their ad space more efficiently and profitably.Admeld now has more than 500 customers worldwide, among them are FOX News, IDG TechNetwork, Discovery and The Weather Channel, according to information posted on its website."By combining Admeld's services, expertise and technology with Google's offerings, we're investing in what we hope will be an improved era of flexible ad management tools for major publishers, " Neal Mohan, Google's vice president of display advertising, said in a blog post announcing the deal."We believe that this investment will be an important step to help on-line publishers, and will further improve and grow the display advertising industry as a whole," Mohan noted.On-line display ads usually appear in forms that consist of images and may be interactive. According to the Interactive Advertising Bureau, a U.S. trade association, display-related on- line ad revenue in the United States totaled nearly 10 billion U.S. dollars in 2010.Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed by the two companies. TechCrunch, a technology blog site, has reported that Google paid around 400 million dollars.
SEOUL, Sept. 26 (Xinhua) -- Samsung Electronics, the world's second-largest manufacturer of mobile phones, launched its first smartphones based on fourth-generation (4G) communication technology in a bid to meet growing demand for high-speed wireless services. Galaxy S2 LTE and Galaxy S2 HD LTE compatible with long- term evolution (LTE) technology were rolled out at a media event held in central Seoul on Monday. The two new smartphones support LTE with data transmission five times faster than the existing third-generation (3G) mobile phones, featuring functions offered by Galaxy S2 smartphones, the company said.The Galaxy S2 LTE is equipped with an Android 2.3, or the latest version of the Android platform, a 4.5-inch wide Super AMOLED display and a 1.5 gigahertz dual core processor, while the Galaxy S2 HD LTE is featuring a 4.65-inch high-definition (HD) AMOLED display with 110 percent natural color reproduction and 180- degree viewing angle. "The 4G LTE technology became the base for enjoying high-speed and high-resolution wireless services. The new products will meet rising demand for such services in an environment where global wireless operators are transitioning to 4G networks," Shin Jong-kyun, president and head of Samsung's mobile communications business, told reporters.Shin forecast sales of the new LTE smartphones would approach the ones of the existing Galaxy S series, adding that it may take time to reach the goal as the LTE networks have yet to be covered nationwide.Global sales of the Galaxy S2 smartphones reached more than 10 million units since its debut in April, according Samsung. BEIJING, Sept. 2 (Xinhuanet) -- Insomnia costs average U.S. worker 11.3 days, or 2,280 dollars, in lost productivity each year, according to a new study published in journal Sleep.The total cost to the nation is 63.2 billion dollars annually, the study said.Researchers analyzed information about sleep habits and work performance from 7,428 workers taking part in Harvard Medical School's American Insomnia Study survey in 2008-09.As a result, 23.2 percent of the participants suffered insomnia, characterized by a hard time falling or staying asleep.Moreover, insomnia rates were 19.9 percent for those with less than a high school education and 21.5 percent for college graduates."We were shocked by the enormous impact insomnia has on the average person's life," said Ronald C. Kessler, a lead author and a psychiatric epidemiologist at Harvard Medical School."It's an underappreciated problem. Americans are not missing work because of insomnia. They are still going to their jobs but accomplishing less because they're tired," Kessler noted.Employers usually ignore the consequences of insomnia because it's not considered an illness resulting in workers' absenteeism.But the high cost of lost sleep identified in this study indicates that employers need to take it more seriously.
