NEW DELHI, Nov. 1 (Xinhua) -- Zhou Yongkang, a senior official of the Communist Party of China (CPC), on Monday asked for joint efforts to promote China-India relations."It is an inevitable trend of history to consolidate and develop the peace and friendship between China and India," Zhou told a seminar on China-India ties."We should extract nutrition and wisdom from history to persist in maintaining peace, friendship and mutually beneficial cooperation, and to be good neighbors, good friends and good partners forever," said Zhou, a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee.He made a five-point proposal on the further development of China-India relations: Zhou Yongkang (L), a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee and secretary of the Political and Legislative Affairs Committee of the CPC Central Committee, meets with Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in New Delhi, capital of India, Nov. 1, 2010.First, both sides should promote political mutual trust."We should maintain high-level visits and exchanges, strengthen communication and cooperation between our governments, parties, parliaments and the armed forces, promote cooperation in defense and security, respect and accommodate each other's core interests and major concerns and continue to build up strategic mutual trust," he said."By doing so we can further consolidate our strategic cooperative partnership," he added.Second, the two countries should expand cooperation in economics and trade."We should intensify cooperation in areas of resources, energy, agriculture, manufacturing, infrastructure, information technology, etc. and also promote mutual investments," he said."We should properly settle problems arising in these fields, reduce restrictive measures against each other to achieve mutually beneficial and win-win results," he added.Third, China and India should expand friendly exchanges."We should further our exchanges and communication in the fields of culture, education, science and technology, promote exchanges between our two countries' academic institutions, youths, as well as press and media, so as to boost mutual understanding and trust between our two peoples," he said."We should do more things conducive to the Sino-Indian friendship and create a good atmosphere for the healthy development of bilateral ties."Fourth, both sides should strengthen international cooperation."We should actively coordinate our stances and strengthen cooperation in international affairs and deal together with global issues including climate change, food security, energy and resource security, terrorism, separatism and extremism, so as to safeguard developing countries' interests," he said.Fifth, the two should strengthen friendly consultation.For controversial issues and disagreements, the two countries should properly handle them on the basis of mutual respect, consultations on equal basis and mutual understanding and mutual accommodation, so as not to let specific issues affect the overall relations, he said.This year marks the 60th anniversary of China-India diplomatic relations."Looking back into our history of exchanges, we felt that peace and friendship between China and India were deeply rooted in the history and culture of our two countries and among our two peoples," said Zhou, who is also secretary of the Commission for Political and Legal Affairs of the CPC Central Committee."It is an established policy and strategic decision of the party and the government of China to develop friendly relations with India," he said.Zhou arrived here Sunday for a visit. He had visited the tomb of Mahatma Gandhi, leader of India's national independence movement.

BEIJING, Sept. 6 (Xinhua) -- The Chinese government announced Monday that it would provide an additional 200 million yuan (29.4 million U.S. dollars) of humanitarian aid to flood-hit Pakistan for disaster relief and reconstruction.The Chinese government had previously given 120 million yuan in humanitarian relief to its neighbor, the Ministry of Commerce said in a statement on its website.Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Jiang Yu confirmed the 200-million-yuan aid on Monday evening."Chinese government has decided to provide 200 million yuan of humanitarian aid to support Pakistan," she said in a statement.As Pakistan's "close neighbor and all-weather friend," China would continue to support Pakistan's disaster relief and reconstruction efforts, said Jiang.Pakistan is still facing severe challenges in relief and reconstruction, and needs additional aid from the international community, she said.

MOSCOW, Aug. 31 (Xinhua) -- Russian President Dmitry Medvedev and Chief Executive of China's Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) Donald Tsang Yan-Kuen voiced their support here on Tuesday for the development of more direct links between Russia and Hong Kong.Tsang arrived in Moscow by the first ever direct commercial flight run by a Hong Kong airline.Tsang noted that after the lifting of visa restrictions in July 2009, two-way travels between Russia and Hong Kong rose by 100 percent."I am certain this flow will be increasing further," he was quoted as saying by local news agencies."The updating of the relevant listing rules in June this year would facilitate the listing of (Russian) mining and resource companies in Hong Kong," said Tsang.He also encouraged Russian companies to issue RMB bonds in Hong Kong, and welcomed Russian banks to set up branches in Hong Kong and make use of the RMB clearing and settlement system.Tsang was accompanied by 30 Hong Kong businessmen who were interested in cooperation with Russia."I hope that your meeting here in Moscow, including with members of the business community, will be useful," said Medvedev.The Russian president also invited Tsang to discuss the further advancement of bilateral cooperation as well as some key international issues.

  

GUANGZHOU, Sept. 8 (Xinhua)-- The tenth tropical storm this year might strike southeast China Thursday night or Friday, bringing waves as high as six meters, said local flood control officials Wednesday.The storm could make landfall in the coastal areas between eastern Guangdong and southern Fujian Provinces, said Guangdong Provincial Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters in a statement.The storm was tracked at 21 degrees north latitude and 119.4 degrees east longitude in the South China Sea at 6 p.m. For the next 12 hours, it is expected to move westward at a speed of 10 to 15 km per hour, said the statement.Further, the storm was packing wind gusts of 72 kilometers per hour near its center at 6 p.m. Torrential rains of 30 to 80 mm are expected in central and eastern Guangdong if landfall is made.Headquarters officials have asked fishing boats to stay clear of the waters east of the Pearl River estuary. Checks on reservoirs should also be beefed up, they said.

  

BEIJING, Oct. 9 (Xinhua) -- China's Vice Premier Li Keqiang has stressed the importance of quality management, proper resettlement of people, environmental protection and preventing corruption in building the country's South-to-North Water Diversion Project.North China had long suffered from water shortages and the project is a strategic infrastructure goal that would benefit the Chinese people, Li told high-ranking government officials at a forum held Saturday in Nanyang, a city in central China's Henan Province.According to a design, a canal serving the middle route of the South-to-North Water Diversion Project will be in Nanyang City.Building the project concerns China's national economic and social development and the long-term development of the Chinese nation, said Li, also director of the South-to-North Water Diversion Project Commission (SNWDPC) of the State Council.Further, the enormous complexity of the South-to North Water Diversion Project called for excellent coordination and organization in pushing forward the construction, he said.Li also stressed the importance of quality management in the project, saying quality control was the core task for building the project into a world-class one.Also, resettlement of people is a key issue in carrying forward the project, and efforts needed to be made to make sure that people are properly resettled and they have the capabilities to increase their wealth, he said.Additionally, Li said, during the process of building the project, more attention should be given to protecting water resources and preventing water pollution.He also called for strengthened supervision of the funding used for the project to prevent corruption and to punish those violating the law.The South-to-North Water Diversion Project is designed to divert water from the water-rich south of China, mainly the Yangtze, the country's longest river, to the country's arid northern part. It will consist of three routes: eastern, middle and western ones. The project started with construction of the eastern route in 2002.Up to now, both of the eastern and middle routes are already under construction. The western route, meant to replenish the Yellow River with water from the upper reaches of the Yangtze through tunnels in the high mountains of western China, is still at the planning stage.About 330,000 people in Hubei and Henan provinces will be relocated before the middle route is completed in 2014.
