A starting point for investigators trying to trace the bombs sent to Democratic figures and CNN this week: the postmark.But in some cases, it appears to be a missing clue.The postmark typically indicates when and where the mail was sent from and is marked over the stamps -- "canceling" them, and preventing the stamps from being reused. Unlike stamps, most of which cannot be traced, the impression left by a postmark or mail meter is distinctive and can help investigators focus their search.A postmark is visible in a photo of at least one of the packages seen by CNN. A postmark is not visible in photos of several other packages shared with CNN -- only adding to the questions about their origins.The lack of a postmark is very rare, according to Nancy Pope of the National Postal Museum.A postal inspector who spoke to CNN on the condition of anonymity indicated it would be very unusual for a piece of mail to leave the facility where it was dropped off for delivery without such a mark.That could indicate that a sender or senders were working in multiple diverse geographical areas, including New York, Washington, Florida and California.Another source told CNN it is possible some of the stamps may not have been canceled because of the package's soft sides and odd shape, which would make it difficult to stamp.The US Postal Service's website also says mail may not be postmarked if it was processed through a meter or if the postage was paid by permit or precanceled stamp. None of those appear to apply to this situation.Adding to the mystery are post office markings on one of two packages sent to former Vice President Joe Biden indicating the stamps on the package did not cover the cost of the delivery, and additional postage is due.That suggests the package was weighed at some point during the shipping process, a former postal inspector told CNN.It was unclear from the photo whether that package had been postmarked.Postmarks can be applied by machine and by hand, depending on how a piece of mail is sent, according to the Postal Service. When mail is run through an automated system at a processing distribution center, the postmark is applied, and the mailed item is screened by a biohazard detection system.It was not clear why postmarks were not visible on several of the packages, and the US Postal Inspection Service provided a statement to CNN that did not address the question."The U.S. Postal Service has developed a comprehensive approach to protecting the mailsystem by utilizing a targeted strategy of specialized technology, screening protocols and employee training," read the statement.The statement noted its Dangerous Mail Investigations Program includes law enforcement officers who "are trained to recognize the common characteristics of suspicious mail and are highly proficient in the use of state-of-the-art equipment to include portable X-ray machines." 2907

A total of 13 people linked to a militia group have been charged by the federal government and the state of Michigan in to kidnap Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer.Six men — Adam Fox, Barry Croft, Ty Garbin, Kaleb Franks, Daniel Harris and Brandon Caserta — were charged by the federal government, according to a criminal complaint from the FBI. Croft is from Delaware; the rest are Michigan residents.Additionally, Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel announced that seven other people, linked to the Michigan-based militia group "Wolverine Watchmen" have been charged by the state in relation to the plot.According to the FBI's complaint, the militia attempted to recruit members for the operation, which included storming the Capitol building in Lansing and taking hostages, including Whitmer.The suspects, now under arrest, are alleged to have called on the groups’ members to identify the home addresses of law enforcement officers in order to target them; made threats of violence to instigate a civil war leading to societal collapse; and engaged in the planning and training for an operation to attack the state Capitol building and kidnap government officials, including Gov. Gretchen Whitmer.In total, 19 state felony charges were filed by the Attorney General against seven individuals known to be members of the militia group, Wolverine Watchmen or associates of Wolverine Watchmen.The plan was reportedly supposed to be executed before the November 2020 election.The militia group reportedly held several meetings over the summer, where they participated in firearms training and combat drills.According to the complaint, they also attempted to build IED devices, which were faulty and did not detonate as planned.The group then reportedly decided to abduct the governor at her vacation home in western Michigan and take her to a secure location in Wisconsin for "trial."In August, federal officials say the group allegedly conducted surveillance of her home on two occasions.On Wednesday night, the FBI and Michigan State Police spent hours raiding a home in Hartland, Michigan — a town about an hour west of Detroit — on Wednesday night, which continued into the early morning of Thursday.The house is located on Lansing Avenue in Hartland Meadows near M-59 in Livingston County.Several Michigan State Police vehicles, including their SWAT team, were also on scene alongside FBI agents. Some officers were dressed in camo gear carrying guns. A non-profit in California has developed a way to capture poachers who snatch sea turtle eggs - building lookalike eggs with GPS trackers constructed inside them.According to research published Monday in the journal Current Biology, the InvestEGGator is a 3D-printed life-like turtle egg that can be tracked as far away as 137 kilometers (85 miles)."It replicates the appearance, weight, and feel of a real turtle egg. It is easily deployed at low risk to investigators, can be programmed and monitored remotely using web-based and smartphone applications, and is a low cost, allowing for deployment of many units at once," said the Ventura-based Paso Pacífico, the non-profit that developed the eggs.The decoy eggs are placed in real nests alongside real eggs, which are monitored and mapped every time they are moved, the non-profit said.The research showed that the decoy eggs provide a signal once every hour."Using data provided by the decoys, we identified trafficking routes and on two occasions properties of potential interest to law enforcement," researchers said in the journal.
