(KGTV) - A talented, visually impaired 11-year-old is thrilled after being chosen for her ability and character to ride on the Lyon's Club Rose Parade float on New Year's Day.The Braille Institute chose Grace Dabbieri as well as two other children to ride on the float as part of this year's theme, "The Melody of Life." If you've heard Grace sing, it's easy to understand why she placed 3rd in Coronado's Got Talent and has been called on to sing at major events."I sung for the state of the city address, for the mayor and for the concert in the park," Grace said. "Excited beyond excited," she said being chosen to ride on the float is like winning the lottery.She's always loved music, "well when I was a baby you know I would just tap on keyboards, but ever since I can remember I've been doing something with music," saying it opens up a whole new world. Grace has Optic Nerve Hypoplasia since birth. She explains her optic nerve connecting her eyes to her brain is too thin, only allowing some light in.Which means instead of seeing her living room, "it's very like blurred and messed up but hey at least I can kinda see." Her ever sunny disposition reflected by her drive to push past obstacles."My motto is disabled can do anything even though they may not be able to see hear walk talk or feel, they can use other methods to help them get through challenges," encouraging anyone to do what they love and let nothing get in their way.Those same challenges daunting for her family. "When I was born, it's kind of natural if you've never met a blind person and you hear that your daughter's blind, you're going to get a little scared. So my mom went to the Braille Institute and met this wonderful blind person... She showed mom how the blind can do anything," she said tearing up.When asked if she was getting emotional, she said yes, "I'm thinking about how awesome the Rose Bowl Parade is going to be, how wonderful my life is, and how awesome my mom is to like be there for me and help me out."Grace thinks it's amazing how technology has enhanced the lives of visually impaired people, and that's part of the reason she wants to be a computer programmer.The Braille Institute will celebrate their centennial in 2019. 2253

CORONADO, Calif. (KGTV) -- Police arrested a second suspect Wednesday in the shooting of an 18-year-old Coronado High School student earlier this month during a jewelry sale meetup. According to police, Alejandro Guzman, 18, was arrested for his alleged involvement in the shooting of Jacob McKanry, who was shot on May 4 near Orange Avenue and 10th Street. Guzman was charged with robbery and transported to San Diego Central Jail. A 17-year-old male was arrested in Chula Vista on May 22 after police served three search warrants in connection to the shooting. That suspect was charged with attempted homicide, robbery, and assault with a deadly weapon. Coca-Cola has introduced a touch-free soda machine amid the coronavirus pandemic.In a press release, the company launched the Coca-Cola Freestyle dispenser, which they say is contactless.“All Coca-Cola beverage dispensers are safe with recommended care and cleaning,” said Chris Hellmann, vice president, and general manager, Coca-Cola Freestyle in the release. “But given these uncertain times, people may prefer a touchless fountain experience. It has been exciting to see our team continuing to innovate – mostly from home – to meet the evolving needs of customers and consumers. Like so many seniors this year, the coronavirus pandemic has left Kuula isolated — separated from family and friends through necessity.Her birthday celebration consisted of her kids singing to her in her front yard.“My oldest son Matt made his first cake and wrote ‘Sweet 16’ because, at age 79, 7 and 9 is sixteen,” Kuula said.So when Kuula got the chance to take part in a pilot program book club for seniors, she couldn’t wait.“When I got the book, I couldn’t put it down,” she said. “Keeping our mind busy!”That could be crucial for older Americans amid the pandemic. According to a Washington Post report, doctors have reported increased falls, pulmonary infections, depression and sudden frailty in patients who had been stable for years.“Human connection is a huge piece of what keeps us healthy,” said Ann Smith, executive director of Books @ Work.Books @ Work isn't a typical book club.— they team up with professors who help facilitate the discussion, in this case, one from Kent State University. The idea came from the Literacy Cooperative, a Cleveland-based nonprofit.They got in touch with seniors who wanted to take part through the Cleveland Department of Aging.“But because most of the folks who participated in this program don’t have internet access, don’t have computers, we actually did this one by phone,” Smith said.Group leaders hooked up a specific phone line that the seniors could call in to — and then, they let them talk. Their first book?
