For years, the White House Correspondents Association has pushed for access to the White House grounds for reporters and news media. On Wednesday, the WHCA told its members to stay away.The White House Correspondents Association’s recommendation came as three of its members are recovering from coronavirus infections. There have also been a number of infections among White House press staffers, including press secretary Kayleigh McEnany.In response to the cluster of coronavirus cases, the WHCA said that only a handful of journalists should work from the White House grounds. The association says other than reporters working at the White House as part of the “pool” as well as those with enclosed offices should refrain from working inside the White House. Pool correspondents are the small, rotating group of reporters who share reports to the rest of the media.“We would also strongly encourage all journalists to avoid working from the White House grounds entirely if it can be avoided,” WHCA chair Zeke Miller said.Miller said that the organization has been pushing for the White House to help with contact tracing.“We have communicated to the White House that, as a press corps, we would like more information to evaluate our own potential exposure,” Miller said. “We have pressed for them to provide updates on known and suspected infections so that reporters can as soon as possible know if they and their families have been put at risk. The administration, citing privacy concerns, has not provided additional details.”Miller said that protocols by White House journalists have helped minimize spread of the virus among its members.“While we are awaiting additional test results for some members, it appears clear that our safe behavior has helped contain this virus,” he said. “We haven’t just been lucky, we have followed science and we have been vigilant.” 1880

Forget the shirt and shoes; no service for people on horseback at Starbucks in Anthem, Arizona. A Valley girl is frustrated after trying to ride her horse through the drive-thru when the barista said nay. Aspen Cline had seen internet videos of others riding their horses through the Starbucks drive-thru and decided that's what she wanted to do for her birthday. Instead, she and her horse, Scout, were shut down by the barista who apparently wasn't into horsing around. "We weren't given a reason, just, "we can't take your order," said Aspen. "My friend and I were going to get frappuccinos for us and a cup of whipped cream for the horses." A Starbucks spokesperson told us, officially, their drive-through is for cars only. He said that policy is for animal, rider and employee safety. But, he also added that the horses caught the barista off guard and with a little-advanced notice next time they'll find a way to serve all creatures."We support Starbucks because they're very accepting," said Tandy Cline, Aspen's mom. "So we were kind of disappointed we got thrown to the side from such a great company."  Tandy said they would definitely be reaching back out to Starbucks to see if they can arrange a better experience for Aspen. 1297

For 9-year-old Joey DeLeon, staying on track can be hard. His mom, JoAnn Lopez, would have to tell him several times to brush his teeth or use his puffer. So, when she heard about The Attention Arcade, a new game system that helps kids focus, she was immediately interested."I figured if it was something we could try and it would work and we could help other kids,” said Lopez. “If it does work, why not do it?”DeLeon is part of a beta test group for Brain Leap Technologies, the company that created the game system. The game comes with a black bar that attaches to your PC. It tracks the child’s eye movements and allows the child to control the game with his or her eyes."The eye movement system and the attention system share neurocircuitry," said Bran Leap Technologies CEO Jeff Coleman. "We are leveraging the eye-movement system. It’s really hard to pin down the attention system, but we leverage the fact that they’re connected to train attention through eye movements."In a new study done at the University of California San Diego that's backed by the National Institutes of Health, Coleman says they saw on average of 55 percent improvement in inhibitory control. That’s the skill you need to not get distracted.And it’s working for DeLeon."I’m good at task initiation, especially when I write things down," said DeLeon. "When my brothers and sister are playing, and they're loud, there's a 50/50 chance I don't get distracted by them.”"He’s gotten better at being independent and just doing it on his own without being asked multiple times. I mean, he still has days where it’s just days, but overall much improved," said Lopez.With DeLeon and his two brothers and sister doing virtual learning this school year, Lopez hopes this helps him focus on his own school work."His grades have been always great when he puts effort in, but he just gets sidetracked a lot, and so hopefully this year, we will see that that has subsided," said Lopez. 1960

For months, many of us have done what we can to keep ourselves and families safe from the coronavirus.We have stayed home from events, worked from home and exercised caution when running errands, but for people who are obese, some have gravitated towards weight loss surgery as a way to protect themselves.According to medical experts, complications from COVID-19 can disproportionately affect people who are obese. In an August study, the Cleveland Clinic found patients with a body mass index of 30 or higher were found to be at a significantly higher risk for severe COVID-19, and those with a BMI of 35 and higher had a dramatically increased risk of death.“It’s been shown that people do worse with viral infections when they’re obese,” said Dr. Michael Snyder, medical director of bariatric surgery at Rose Medical Center in Denver, Colorado. “In addition, the success of a vaccine is limited in people that are obese, for any viral vaccine historically.”That August study by the Cleveland Clinic also found that when patients with obesity lose at least 5% to 10% of their weight, their risk of cardiovascular disease drops and their survival rate improves. Perhaps, that is why so many have decided to have different types of bariatric surgery to control their weight.“Obesity is really a pro-inflammatory condition and we think it really affects your T cell response; your ability to appropriately attack infection,” said Dr. Snyder.Amanda Kines-Phillips is one of those people. In February, she had wanted to get her weight more under control and decided to go through with a mini gastric bypass surgery. However, because of COVID-19 and the ban on elective surgeries, Kines-Phillips’ surgery was pushed back to July.In the four months since her mini gastric bypass, she has lost 55 pounds and feels healthier and better about health in case she contracts the virus.“I have two small daughters that I need to be there for the rest of my life and to be the best mom that I can be,” she said. “So to me [this surgery] is a life-changing tool.”Dr. Snyder says during a typical week, he performs 12 to 15 surgeries to help people control their weight. Florida is once again in the crosshairs of Tropical Storm Eta as the slow-moving system meanders its way toward Florida’s Gulf Coast.On Tuesday afternoon, the National Hurricane Center issued a tropical storm warning for the Dry Tortugas, and a tropical storm watches for parts of Florida's west coast, including the Tampa area.The storm has top sustained winds of 60 mph and has been drifting off the northwest coast of Cuba since early Monday after Eta went over the Florida Keys. The tropical storm’s outer bands have been raking the Florida peninsula for days.As it turns more toward the north, Eta is forecast to remain a tropical storm until Saturday, according to the National Hurricane Center. Eta’s forecast cone does not bring the center of it over land until then, but its outer rain bands are expected to dump heavy rain in parts of Florida that could lead to flooding.Eta was the 12th named system to strike the US this hurricane season, setting a record. This hurricane season set a new record on Monday for most named systems with 29 after the formation of Theta in the eastern Atlantic.Theta marks the deepest jaunt down the Greek hurricane naming list. Theta is the seventh storm this season named after a letter in the Greek alphabet. The only other time the Greek alphabet has been used was in 2005.Eta previously struck Central America as a powerful Category 4 hurricane last week.The Atlantic hurricane season still has another three weeks to go, and it’s not unheard of for a system to develop in December if conditions are favorable, like they have been for much of 2020. 1602
