SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- A man suspected in an attack at a Rolando 7-Eleven that left a father of four on life support pleaded not guilty to one charge of assault with a deadly weapon Friday.The assault charge includes a special allegation for great bodily injury on the victim.John Cowan Patch, 26, is accused of striking 30-year-old George Almestar in the head with a wrench during an argument early Tuesday morning. Arian Tabatabaei's family runs Huapangos in Hillcrest. His parents, Viri and JT, have owned it for more than a decade. Arian and his twin work there to help their parents. "It's been good until now," he said. Like many, their future is up in the air. "It's completely dead in Hillcrest right now," he said. "We're not making any profit to help anybody... all these bills that are coming in, they're just piling right now." They've had to lay off most of their employees. Tabatabaei said they dropped their prices, simplified their menu, and are offering take out or delivery. There's been an ongoing effort on social media to promote businesses that are still open.Laura posted on Twitter that she got pizza for her birthday from Tribute Pizza in North Park. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Two children suffered injuries Monday when a pick-up truck driven by an elderly man hit tables and parked cars outside a University City Starbucks.The crash happened about 8 a.m. outside the coffee shop at 3202 Governor Drive at Regents Road, according to San Diego Police. The Starbucks is near the University City Post Office.The 85-year-old man driving the truck jumped the curb, crashing into customers.A 6-year-old girl was taken to the hospital with unknown injuries. Police did not release details about her condition. A 2-year-old girl had an injury to her lip but did not need further treatment.San Diego Police have not announced what caused the crash. 689

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - UC San Diego Health unveiled a drone pilot program they are a part of, testing flights containing sensitive medical samples and documents.The idea is to skip over traffic on the ground. "Unfortunately traffic seems to get worse and worse every year so what we're really trying to do is find alternatives for doing that," Matthew Jenusaitis, Chief Administrative Officer at UC San Diego Health said.San Diego is one of nine cities in the country testing the FAA's Integration Pilot Program."So the goal is to establish how the FAA is going to monitor a lot of their drone flights as we move forward," James Killeen, Emergency Medicine Physician and Professor of Emergency Medicine, said. He said this will help determine how other private delivery companies, like Amazon, will operate drones.This drone is three feet by three feet and carries a small UPS box. "The package itself is specially designed, impact resistant, temperature controlled... The container is locked, so only special people can open it," Killeen said.The drone is also equipped with a parachute.The program received FAA certification and authorization and will use low risk flight paths for the deliveries.They worked with the military on how to safely flhy their drone and established a ceiling of 300 feet.The flights themselves are completely automatic.The future, Jenusaitis said, is limitless, "we could potentially be using this to fly samples from our clinic 20 miles away from here, in Rancho Bernardo, to the hospital."Currently they are flying dummy samples. In the coming weeks they will fly medical samples from volunteer patients.There are no cameras on the drones, to ensure privacy of those on the ground.
