International auction house Bonhams has canceled an upcoming sale of rhino products amid mounting pressure from environmental groups, it was announced Friday.The auction, which was due to take place in Hong Kong next week, would have featured more than 20 antiques carved from rhino horn, including a vase, a hairpin, a pouring vessel and a variety of drinking cups.In a statement provided to CNN, Bonhams global CEO Matthew Girling said: "(We recognize) there are widely held concerns about this issue and have decided that the sale of the rhinoceros carving scheduled to take place in Hong Kong on 27 November will now not take place."An online catalog for the sale, which had been titled "Exceptional Chinese Rhinoceros Horn Carvings from the Angela Chua Collection," has been removed from the auction house's website.Girling also announced that Bonhams would join the likes of Christie's in barring rhino horn items from its auctions."In future Bonhams will not offer artifacts made entirely or partly from rhinoceros horn in its salerooms," the statement said.The decision follows objections from high-profile conservation groups, including WildAid. An online petition, addressed directly to Girling, called the auction "unethical" and "unsustainable," suggesting that the sale would stimulate poaching.The petition, which had been signed almost 10,000 times at the time of writing, also claimed that the sale was "quite likely illegal," and composed of "horns from recently poached rhinos" rather than antiques.Girling refuted such suggestions in his statement, claiming that all rhino carvings that pass through the auction house are antiques with "known provenance" and requisite licenses."Bonhams stands behind the professionalism and expertise of its specialists," he added.The use of rhino horn in Chinese art and crafts dates back millennia. Carved cups, such as those featured in the Bonhams auction, were thought to protect their users from poisoning. It was once believed that rhino horn reacted with poison, producing a fizzing that would alert drinkers to danger.Despite global efforts to combat poaching, antique rhino horn items can still be bought and sold if they carry a license issued by CITES (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species).Bonhams, which is headquartered in London, is considered among the world's oldest and largest fine art auction houses. Rhino products previously sold by Bonhams include a cup dating back to the 17th century, which sold for 4,000 earlier this year.Rhino horn items recently sold at the auction house's UK salerooms include a Buddhist carving from Nepal, which went for ￡40,000 (,000), and another elaborate Chinese cup worth ￡25,000 (,000). INDIANAPOLIS — Parents of two girls who attend Horizon Christian School on Indianapolis’ northeast side say their daughters are being bullied and threatened because of the color of their skin.Alexander Wortham realized something was happening when his daughter, Imani, started acting strange, asking to stay home from school more often than a typical teen girl.He and Dominique Duncan soon found out that their two high school daughters were being bullied.“Silence is killing our young people," Wortham said. "People not dealing with the issue. Not dealing with the problem and I think for us, as parents, enough is enough."Duncan agreed.“Very let down as a parent. Very let down,” Duncan said.Imani and her friend, LaShanti, say a male student started bullying them at school saying things like “If the school ever gets shot up, you’ll be the first one to get shot.”“He pointed to me personally, he looked me in the eye,” Imani said.“He said he would sell me into slavery if I didn’t do what he said and then he started making little jingles about slavery,” LaShanti said.According to an email the parents received from a school administrator, the school suspended the student last week after the girls’ parents brought the issue to the administration’s attention. But that student was allowed to return to class on Monday.The girls felt so uncomfortable, they both decided to stay home this week.“We should be able to go to school and not feel threatened, scared or having to be on edge the whole time,” Imani said.Both parents say they want the school to create more concrete policy changes on bullying. IRVINGTON, Indiana — An Indiana man has a warning for drivers who park anywhere Bird Scooters are known to be after he says he was left with hundreds of dollars in repairs after one of them blew over and damaged his vehicle. "It was a windy day. I think it was gusting 40 or 50 miles an hour that day," Matt Kawiecki said.The damage to Kawiecki's car was estimated at more than 0, but Bird tells him they're only willing to pay a fraction of that cost. "I offered to get multiple quotes, to see if this is a fair price — no response," said Kawiecki. He says the company was responsive when he first called to report the damage, but after he got the quote to fix the damage they stopped responding as much. "The quote came back at over 0. So I was a little surprised, just from a dent. Bird offered to pay 25 percent," Kawiecki said. He says it isn't even about the money, he's upset that the company won't take responsibility for the damage their scooter caused. "It's not about the money. I could care less about the money," Kawiecki said. "When they are not owning up to something as small and petty as 0 or 0 for a billion evaluated company, it's a little bit surprising."In the meantime, Kawiecki is urging other drivers to park away from scooters, so they don't have a similar incident. WRTV television station in Indianapolis reached out to Bird Scooters to ask them about the company's obligations to cover damage caused by unoperated scooters. INDIANAPOLIS -- Ninety minutes after Tonya Holtgrave dropped her dog, Titan, off at Barkefellers on the west side, the doggy daycare called to tell her that Titan appeared to be injured.Holtgrave said they told her that they weren't sure what happened, but she needed to take him to a veterinary hospital immediately."I was just shocked when they called me and said he was hurt, and it's kind of been a shock ever since," she said.According to medical records, Titan fractured his tibia in both legs."They let my dog get hurt," Holtgrave said "That's negligence on their part, not mine."She said the vets told her Titan will need an expensive surgery. She wants the company to help pay for it."I just can't afford that right now, ,000 for surgery," Holtgrave said. "I am already out over ,000 just in all of these vet bills and stuff, and his medicine."Barkefellers said they checked their surveillance cameras and did not see any point where the dog might have gotten injured under their care. Holtgrave said she had Titan's vet call the facility. The manager said they can't pay for anything unless they have proof that Titan was injured on their property."The other vet had already told him it was a traumatic injury, that he didn't walk in there with two broken legs," Holtgrave said.The owners of Barkefellers said they will help pay for the medical bills once they have their own vets review the records and X-rays themselves, and get the proof they need to make sure this injury happened there. 1518
