SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Months after one of San Diego’s biggest employers was said to be looking to add up to 1,000 jobs, General Dynamics NASSCO instead announced layoffs.In April, NASSCO held a job fair, claiming the company was looking to add up to 1,000 jobs. Robert Godinez, head of the Boilermakers Union Local 1998, says the shipbuilder didn’t hire close to that number.In total, NASSCO notified nearly 1,500 workers that they could be out of a job in September. The shipbuilder told 10News it expects to let go of closer to 350 workers.The layoffs are in relation to a dry dock accident in July that damaged facilities.One of the company’s employees, Glicerio Cortez, says he doesn’t know exactly what happened in July, but he heard of the damage through coworkers. “They say that they heard like a, something like a bomb, something strong and then the water came all the way to the dry dock,” said Cortez.RELATED: NASSCO delivers layoff notices to 1,500 workersVideo captured by Sky10 shows water flooding the dry dock as debris filled the area. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Police are asking for the public’s help identifying a man they believe robbed the same San Diego gas station twice in six months.According to police, the first robbery happened at the Chevron on the 3500 block of National Avenue on June 2 at 4 a.m. with the second taking place November 3 at 3:52 a.m.During both robberies, the suspect stole cash and cigarettes, pointing a handgun at the clerk. The suspect is described as a Hispanic male, 35 to 40-years-old and between 5’6’” and 5’9” tall.During the June robbery the man was wearing blue jeans and a black hooded sweatshirt. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - NASA's Mars-bound rocket launch from Southern California could leave San Diego gazers disappointed.Saturday's launch window could be blanketed behind a thick layer of morning fog, according to meteorologists. Vandenberg Air Force Base is forecasted to see partly cloudy skies through the morning hours.The fog, however, may not be enough to scrap the launch. InSight's launch director Tim Dunn said during a briefing Thursday that, "We got 'go's' from all aspects, all organizations that have a vested interest in launching InSight," Space.com reported. RELATED: Mars-bound NASA launch will be seen from San DiegoThe launch is currently scheduled for Vandenberg between 4:05 a.m. and 6:05 a.m. NASA has given a six-month time window to set InSight for Mars.Regardless of fog, officials have given the all-clear for NASA's first interplanetary launch on the west coast.But that shouldn't deter San Diegans from trying to catch a glimpse — even if just a blurry bright light in the distance. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Police are investigating after a man was shot in the leg in East Village late Saturday night.Authorities say a 48-year-old man parked his car on 11th and E Street near City College Station around 10:50 p.m. Saturday.The man got out of the car and started walking when he saw two people arguing and heard gunshots.According to police, the man got into his car and began to drive away when he felt a pain in his right leg, looked down and saw that he was bleeding.Police said at this time, they don’t have any description of the suspects.The man drove himself to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries. 642

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Proposition 25 is a measure that would end the money bail system, replacing it with an assessment for public safety and flight risk. If approved, it would allow SB 10 –signed into law in 2018—to take effect.Team 10 spoke to a San Diego mother against Proposition 25. She did not want to be identified because her daughter has an open case. She said she was recently able to get her out of jail by paying bail.“It would be devastating not to have that available,” she told Team 10 over the phone. “Unfortunately, she is caught up in a very unhealthy relationship and she actually was the victim in this.”She said her daughter has mental health issues and is worried that her daughter would have unfairly stayed in jail longer.“Not having [bail] available, I wouldn't have been able to get her out especially with this whole pandemic going on. There [are] delays in the courts. Courts are not open.”While many civil rights groups have worked to reform the current system, some do not believe this proposal is better. The No on 25 ad features the President of the California NAACP.In the ad, Alice Huffman says “Prop. 25 ends our right to put up bail for anyone, even though they may have been racially profiled. Prop. 25 replaces bail with computer algorithms.”Backers of the measure believe Proposition 25 is a fairer system. Opponents believe it is a “new discriminatory system of computer-generated profiling,” according to the argument against Prop. 25 in the official voter guide.Legal analyst Michael Crowley said while parts of the ad are factual, there are misleading statements.“It is factually correct that this proposition will replace the cash bail [and] bail bondsman with algorithms. They say algorithms like it's a dirty word, but we live with algorithms every day,” Crowley said. “In fact, they're using some algorithms in the court system as we speak.”In reference the term “black boxes” used in the ad, Crowley said that it is a “term in the industry that is just used to talk about algorithms that they keep them proprietary.”The American Bail Coalition is a major backer of the No campaign.
