SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - On Monday, San Diego City Attorney Mara Elliott announced that the courts officially ordered the closure of a notorious independent living facility home off Ewing Street in the College Area, following a lawsuit brought by the City last November.“The circumstances were egregious,” Elliott told ABC 10News on Monday. She said the facility is no longer allowed to operate anywhere in San Diego County.“It was filthy. There were bed bugs. There were roaches. The air quality was not good,” she added. Officers had reportedly been called out nearly 300 times for issues like disturbing the peace and suicide threats.Now, the facility’s manager, operator and owners are ordered to pay a collective 7,000 in fines and restitution for victims.Eric Ching represents the homeowners who claim they had no idea the property was being used as an independent living facility. “They’re in Hong Kong. They’re elderly…they own this property [and] have a property manager that was supposed to manage this property. They were unaware of this problem until last year,” he told ABC 10News.Generally, independent living facilities provide the most vulnerable people with a last chance for housing before becoming homeless. This house had ten people living inside using disability checks to pay rent of up to ,000 a month.Elliott said the closure was part of a bigger crackdown. “It is one of our biggest objectives at the City Attorney's Office. We feel like we're the office that can stand up for the little guy…the most vulnerable [person] who otherwise would have nobody else to call,” she added.Elliott said that the facility’s operator, Mark Rogers, is charged with elder abuse and threats in a separate criminal case, which is still unresolved in the courts.ABC 10 News reached out to the attorneys for the other parties involved and are waiting for replies. 1875

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — One person is dead after a shooting in the Mountain View area Wednesday.San Diego Police responded to reports of a shooting just before 3 p.m. in the 3500 block of Florence Lane. Officers arrived to find a victim in an alley suffering from a gunshot wound, according to City News Service.The victim, described only as a male, was pronounced dead at the scene.The suspected shooter was described as a man who appeared in his 30s, wearing shots and a black tank top. He seen fleeing the area with another person in a silver Dodge Ram pickup or similar truck, CNS reported.SDPD is investigating. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - On this holiday, some extra thanks for a Clairemont family, months after an expectant mother was placed on a ventilator from COVID-19."This Thanksgiving, I’m thankful to be here with my family," said Ashley Duque.That family includes Ashley, her husband Diego, their daughter Anna, 3, and the newest addition, three-month-old Lucas."He came out our miracle baby," said Ashley.The miracle emerged from a pandemic. In March, 17 weeks into her pregnancy, Ashley was hospitalized with coronavirus, before being placed on a ventilator for five days."It was very, very scary," said Ashley.She spoke to ABC 10News from her hospital bed while recovering. Ashley was discharged after more than two weeks, but she would be back for nine different surgeries from complications from the COVID-19 treatment.Most of the surgeries involved removing scar tissue in her throat caused by her time on the ventilator.Then in August, Ashley was back in the hospital, as she went into labor three weeks early."I was nervous and scared," said Ashley.Despite her COVID battle and her other health issues, Lucas Duque was born August 25, weighing 6 pounds, 6 ounces. He was healthy."We’re just very blessed that nothing happened to him," said Ashley.On this Thanksgiving holiday, there is a mix of emotions. Ashley is still having issues with the scar tissue, but Ashley and Diego are feeling an overwhelming feeling of gratitude."In a flip of coin, anything can happen. Just very grateful to have my family with me. They are my world," said Diego."Learned to cherish every moment. Definitely our most grateful Thanksgiving ever," said Ashley. 1645

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - North Park’s Chicken Pie Shop is celebrating 80 years in business Friday and Saturday with deals for customers.The restaurant was originally located on 5th Avenue downtown. Then-owner George Whitehead moved his business to Hillcrest. The storefront at 5th and Robinson now houses a Starbucks.Eventually, Whitehead’s longtime employee John Townsend bought the business and moved it to El Cajon Blvd. at Oregon St. Townsend handed it down to his two sons.“Our father worked so hard for so many years. It’s a grind; you gotta be up for the task each and every day.”Bob Townsend is proud of the Chicken Pie Shop's history. He estimates the number of chicken pies sold at more than 30 million.“People just keep coming,” said Townsend. “They respect good old-school cooking.”Townsend described customers who travel to San Diego and head straight to North Park from the airport. Others buy coolers to bring home some of the restaurant’s frozen creations. Some devoted patrons included boxer Archie Moore and Mesa College coach Bill Sandback, both of whom Townsend served regularly until they passed.It’s not just the customers who stick around. The restaurant's dessert baker has been working for Chicken Pie Shop for 55 years and is now in his 80s.“If I made him retire, he’d probably die,” Townsend said.While Townsend is invested in the family legacy, his wife Lisa takes care of day-to-day operations while Townsend works as an instructor at Riverwalk Golf Course in Mission Valley. The Townsend family tradition may continue. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — One man has died after a hit-and-run outside Sharp Memorial Hospital in Kearny Mesa, after he had reportedly been discharged from the hospital.San Diego Police said a 61-year-old man was in the southbound land in the 3000 block of Health Center Dr. when they were hit by an unknown vehicle just after 5:30 p.m. The vehicle fled the scene after hitting the man, SDPD said.The man was taken to the hospital, where he died.Police told ABC 10News at the scene that the man had reportedly just been discharged from the hospital before he was hit by the vehicle.SDPD Traffic Division was investigating the collision. The victim's name was not immediately released.Health Center Dr. and Frost St. were closed following the hit-and-run for investigators. 773
