SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego Padres players and city leaders surprised more than 140 elementary school students with new bicycles Friday.As part of the Padres Holiday Giving Tour, the team partnered with Bikes for Kids Foundation to gift 141 students at Horton Elementary School. At first, the group of second- and third-grade students thought they were gathered to learn which student had won a bicycle after an essay challenge. One name was read. But then a second student won. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego police are searching for two suspects involved in a knife attack in Bay Terraces early Sunday morning that left a 30-year-old man hospitalized.The assault happened at around 4:25 a.m. in the 6900 block of Paradise Valley Road, said Ofc. Tony Martinez, San Diego Police Department The victim told police he was confronted by two men who asked him for a cigarette."An argument ensued, and during the argument, the victim was stabbed multiple times," Martinez said.Both suspects fled in a white sedan-type vehicle, according to Martinez.The victim suffered a stab wound to the neck, the left bicep and lacerations to his nose, jaw and back, Martinez said. The victim was taken to a nearby hospital. His condition is unknown at this time but Martinez said he is expected to survive.The two men were described as Hispanic between 20 and 30 years old. One of the suspects stands about 6- foot, 2-inches tall weighing 180 pounds with a thin build. He was last seen wearing a black baseball hat, a black jacket and blue jeans.The second suspect stands about 6-feet tall weighing 200 pounds with a heavy build. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego Loyal SC announced Thursday they will be wearing a Black Lives Matter alternate kit for the team's first game and for other selected games through 2021.The uniform is all black with dark teal accent and the phrase “Together San Diego” will run down the side of the jersey. Player nameplates will spell out "Black Lives Matters" across the back standing in solidarity with the national-turned-global movement against racism and injustice towards people of color.The team's first game is Saturday in Utah.The organization's goal in aligning itself with the BLM movement is to promote inclusivity and diversity in the community, according to team President Warren Smith."Loyal is more than just our name -- it's our mantra," Smith said. "The Loyal in our name is symbolic of the diversity in our community, and now more than ever we stand by this. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego County District Attorney's office published an updated 25-year officer-involved shooting analysis Thursday. The study is said to be one of the most comprehensive of its kind released in the country.10News spoke to District Attorney, Summer Stephan at her office in Downtown San Diego. Her office is responsible for investigating all officer-involved shootings in the county. "We look at those reports with an eye as to whether there is criminal liability," Stephan said. Some notable statistics of the newly released study include:-Between 1993 - 2017, there were 451 officer-involved shootings in San Diego County (55% were fatal)-64% of shootings happened within 5 minutes of an officer arriving at the scene-79% of shootings involved a person who had drugs/alcohol in their system or had mental health issues-92% of subjects were armed with a weapon-There are an average of 18 officer-involved shootings per year-Most shootings occurred after traffic stops and domestic violence incidents-Most shootings happened at an alley/street-Most frequent time of day for a deadly encounter was the midnight hour on FridaysArmed with these new stats, Stephan's office is working with local agencies to reduce these shootings. She said it begins with re-training officers and dispatchers, but also teaching citizens how to call 911."What information is dispatch getting, to tell the officers about the individual's mental health condition, their delusions or history of violence or substance abuse?" Stephan said.The DA's office has already started to pass out 911 cards at community events. The card has a mental evaluation checklist when for when citizens call for help.They are also re-training dispatchers to recognize certain situations and ask the right questions so that they can relay accurate information to field officers. Officers are also getting additional crisis management and de-escalating tools to help them reduce the speed in which they react, or use non-lethal force.The idea: Knowledge is power. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer announced Monday a larger investment into a program creating job opportunities for the homeless. Wheels of Change was launched in 2018 as a public-private partnership providing jobs and training for those living in the Alpha Project bridge shelter. “It’s innovative, it’s unique. It’s working it’s growing and it’s making a difference in people’s lives,” said Faulconer. The program is expanding from three to ten shifts per week, with participants earning per hour as they remove litter and debris through the Clean SD initiativee. An additional van is also being provided to transport the 20 workers. The City of San Diego doubled its investment to 0,000 this fiscal year.
