This time of year, many people get Cinderella complexes and worry their financial lives will unravel if they don’t pay their tax bill by the stroke of midnight on April 17. But will the IRS really turn your assets into pumpkins if you don’t meet the deadline? Though the timeline varies (things can happen faster or slower, depending on the situation), here’s how tax pros say things often play out. 407
Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin asked the White House about the possibility of using a government jet for his European honeymoon this summer but later withdrew the request.A Treasury Department spokesperson told CNN in a statement that Mnuchin made the request to ensure he had access to secure lines of communication when he and his new wife, Louise Linton, were traveling."Treasury withdrew its request after a secure communications option was identified during the Secretary's extended travel," the spokesperson said Wednesday.Treasury said it has a practice of considering a "wide range of options" to ensure Mnuchin has access to secure communications, including the possible use of military aircraft. The Treasury spokesperson said it was "imperative" that Mnuchin, who is a member of the National Security Council and directly involved with national security issues tied to North Korea, Iran, and Venezuela, could communicate securely.ABC News was the first media outlet to report the Secretary's request. When asked if there was a review of the request, an official with the Treasury Department's Inspector General, which investigates allegations of wrongdoing within the agency, told CNN Wednesday "We are looking at all requests and uses of government aircraft."A White House spokesperson declined to comment and directed questions to Treasury. This is not the first time a trip by the former Goldman Sachs banker has raised eyebrows.Another trip by Mnuchin and his wife to Kentucky last month is already under review by the Treasury Department's Inspector General.Jaws dropped in August when Linton posted a picture of herself on Instagram stepping out of a U.S. government plane. She had tagged a series of luxury designers such as Hermes, Tom Ford and Valentino to describe her expensive clothing. Social media pounced on the post and called it ostentatious.Mnuchin's trip to Kentucky included a stop at a chamber luncheon in Louisville and Fort Knox, where he, and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, and others watched the Aug. 21 eclipse. The Treasury Department has previously defended Mnuchin's trip as "official government travel" and denied that viewing the eclipse was the primary purpose of the trip.Instead, the agency said the government aircraft was used to facilitate the secretary's travel schedule and ensure uninterrupted access to secure communications."The Department of the Treasury sought and received the appropriate approval from the White House. Secretary Mnuchin has reimbursed the government for the cost of Ms. Linton's travel in accordance with the longstanding policy regarding private citizens on military aircraft," a Treasury spokesperson told CNN earlier this month. 2746

Those working from home could soon have the option of moving their home temporarily to the island nation of Barbados.According to the Barbados Government Information Service, the country is working on a 12-month “Welcome Stamp” that would allow “persons to come and work from here overseas, digitally so, so that persons don’t need to remain in the countries in which they are.” Prime Minister Mia Amor Mattley said the concept is being refined right now.Barbados is an island on the southeastern side of the Caribbean.“But in order for those things (long-term travel to and from Europe or the U.S.) to truly resonate, what does it mean? It means that what we offer has to be world-class and what we continue to offer is world-class,” Mottley said. The prime minister also called on those living in Barbados to help by doing their part during the pandemic. “If the first tourist is a Bajan, then they must equally, also be the first promoter and the first protector,” she is quoted as saying.Barbados has reported 103 cases of COVID-19 since the pandemic started, and seven deaths from the virus. The island has a population of just under 300,000.Her comments came during a reopening of a restaurant in St. Lawrence Gap on the south side of Barbados.Curfew restrictions in Barbados were lifted in July, and beaches and parks do not have limited hours. Social gatherings are limited to 500 people and social distancing is required in public.According to the U.S. embassy in Barbados, flights to the island resume over the next few weeks depending on the airline. Health screening and wearing masks is required at the airport, and a COVID-19 test will be done upon entry with some travelers being monitored for symptoms for up to 14 days. 1743
TOKYO (AP) -- The decades-old dream of zipping around in the sky as simply as driving on highways may be becoming less illusory.Japan's SkyDrive Inc., among the myriads of "flying car" projects around the world, has carried out a successful though modest test flight with one person aboard. In a video shown to reporters on Friday, a contraption that looked like a slick motorcycle with propellers lifted several feet (1-2 meters) off the ground and hovered in a netted area for four minutes.Tomohiro Fukuzawa, who heads the effort, said he hopes to turn it into a real-life product by 2023, but acknowledged that making the vehicle safe was critical. 658
Top USA Swimming officials are under fire for what critics say was a culture of sexual abuse that was allowed to persist for decades unchecked.A stunning new investigative report first published in the Orange County Register found that since 1997, more than 250 coaches and officials were either arrested, charged or disciplined by USA Swimming for sexual abuse or misconduct. The paper -- citing, documents, interviews with abuse survivors, former Olympians, USA Swimming officials and others -- claims that there are at least 590 victims. According to the report, the organization's top brass was aware of the problem, but did little, if anything, to stop it. 674
