The opioid crisis has had a devastating impact across the country.Now, doctors in one state are tackling the problem head on, and it starts with how they treat pain in the emergency room. When Dr. Donald Stader walks through his emergency room these days, it's almost like he's a different doctor. “I used to over prescribe opioids for the first several years of my career and residency,” he says. “I was giving them out like Tic Tacs, if you will.” All that changed a few years ago, when he met a woman overdosing on heroin. “She told me that she actually got hooked after being prescribed Percocet for an ankle sprain,” Dr. Stader says. “And one thing that struck me, earlier that day I had prescribed Percocet for an ankle sprain and thought that I was practicing really good medicine.” Now, he and his hospital, Swedish Medical Center, are a part of the Colorado Hospital Association’s ALTO Project, a program aiming to reduce the use of opioids in emergency rooms in the state, using alternative pain treatment.The program is paying off.However, experts say it's too late. The crisis is so bad, so simply improving prescription practices is not enough to combat opioid abuse. In an article published in JAMA Psychiatry, doctors say in addition to tighter drug restrictions, psychiatrists specializing in depression and suicide, along with new research and treatments, are needed. Now, they treat patients with medications like Tylenol and ibuprofen. For stronger pain, they use ketamine, bentyl and lidocaine, which is often used in the dentist’s office. Two million Americans struggle with opioid addiction and 42,000 people died of overdoses in 2016 alone. 1678

A 4-year-old girl and four family members are recovering after a bobcat attack on Mt. Graham. Two campgrounds are closed with Arizona Game and Fish trying to catch and kill the cat they suspect has rabies. Has more on what officials are calling an extreme and bizarre animal attack. Game and Fish says they won't know for sure until they catch and test the animal, but this is simply not the behavior of a healthy bobcat. They say it needs to be destroyed. “The behavior is extreme by any reasonable standard. This is not someone coming across a bobcat and quickly being bit and the bobcat running off, this is sustained attacks on human beings,” said Arizona Game and Fish Spokesperson Mark Hart. Graham survived a traumatic experience Sunday. “A year-old girl ran behind the tent, her mother heard screaming, and they came around the tent to see she was being attacked by a bobcat, on the ground bitten at least once in the head.”The girl's father, two uncles, and a teenage girl came to her aid and the bobcat attacked them too. Hart says mountain lions can target children, but a healthy bobcat never would. “A bobcat is going to be more interested in an antelope squirrel or a rodent, not a human being it’s too big, the child was bigger than the bobcat.”The girl was treated for rabies exposure at a nearby hospital. Her family needed to go to two other hospitals to get the vaccine. All have been released. “Once symptoms onset rabies is almost always fatal. If you are exhibiting symptoms the vaccine won't work but if you get it before symptoms onset your life will be saved.”Shannon and Snow Flat campgrounds have been closed to the public. “We are on scene today setting traps and using predator calls in an attempt to lure the bobcat in, it has to be destroyed.”Hart says rabies are more common in foxes, bats, and skunks but the disease can be spread to other animals. A driver jumped a curb in Harlem in New York City, striking a father and son out for a walk, and then got out of his BMW and slashed the dad, police said Thursday.The 32-year-old dad was with his 8-year-old son on Nov. 6 when a BMW jumped the curb, officials said. A "partial equipment failure" involving a jet bridge at Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport (BWI) in Maryland on Saturday left six people injured.The airport tweeted that the six people were taken to local hospitals with non-life threatening injuries. The jet bridge, an extendable hallway stretching from the terminal to the plane, was at Gate E-10 for Southwest Airlines Flight 822, according to the airline.Southwest Airlines said the flight arrived at BWI from Punta Cana, Dominican Republic, with a request for paramedics to meet it to check out a passenger's "onboard medical situation." While medics were helping the passenger outside the aircraft, the airline said the jet bridge "experienced a failure."The remaining passengers got off the plane using stairs."We are working swiftly to assist all passengers and crew," Southwest said in a statement to CNN.The BWI Fire and Rescue Department responded, along with mutual aid, the tweet added.The jet bridge failure at BWI Airport is "under investigation," according to another tweet from the airport.The bridge will remain closed until the investigation is over, the tweet said.
