BRASILIA, April 16 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao explained to several foreign leaders why he had to cut short his visit after a deadly earthquake in northwestern China's Qinghai province."At this difficult time, I need to return to my country urgently, to be together with the people of China, pitching in with the earthquake rescue efforts," Hu said to the leaders.A 7.1-magnitude quake struck the Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture of Yushu on Wednesday, killing at least 1,144 people and leaving 294 missing and 11,486 injured. About 100,000 people have been relocated.When the tragedy was reported to Hu, he had just attended the Nuclear Security Summit in Washington. Hu held an urgent meeting to analyze the sudden quake.Hu urged all-out efforts to save lives and provide assistance to people in the disaster zone. GOTEBORG, Sweden, March 28 (Xinhua) -- China's Zhejiang Geely Holding Group signed a deal worth 1.8 billion U.S. dollars with Ford Motor Co. here Sunday to acquire the U.S. auto giant's Volvo car unit.Under the definitive stock purchase deal, Geely will own 100 percent of Volvo Cars and its related assets.The agreement was inked by Li Shufu, founder and chairman of Geely, and Lewis Booth, chief financial officer of Ford, at a ceremony at the headquarters of Volvo in Goteborg, the second largest city of Sweden. Geely Chairman Li Shufu attends a press conference after the signing ceremony in Goteborg of Sweden, March 28, 2010. BEIJING, May 19 (Xinhua) -- Major indices of China's large ports mostly pointed to better performance in April with increasing cargo throughput and exports volume, the Ministry of Transport said Wednesday.According to latest figures posted on the ministry's website, China's large sea ports and river ports saw rapid throughput growth in cargo, exported goods volume and containers from January to April.Passenger throughput via large ports, however, fell 18.5 percent from a year earlier to 295 million in the first four months of 2010, the ministry said.Large ports are classified in China as sea ports with an annual cargo throughput above 15 million tonnes and river ports with an annual cargo throughput above 10 million tonnes.From January to April, cargo throughput in those large ports jumped 20.2 percent year on year to about 2.48 billion tonnes, the ministry said.About 206.5 million tonnes of goods were exported via the large ports during the January-April period, up 27.2 percent from a year ago.Container throughput rose 22.4 percent year on year to 436.81 million TEUs in the first four months, according to the ministry.

BEIJING, April 19 (Xinhua) -- China's Vice President Xi Jinping Monday told members and organizations of the Communist Party of China (CPC) they had strict responsibilities in restoring normal life in quake-stricken Qinghai Province and helping the survivors.Xi, a member of the Standing Committee of the CPC Central Committee Political Bureau, made the requirements at a meeting of senior CPC leaders in Beijing on Party building.Party members, officials and organizations responsible for civil affairs should make sure quake-affected people have enough food, clothes, drinking water and shelters, Xi said.CPC members, officials and organizations working in health-care fields should treat the injured and prevent disease outbreaks, while members working in education should work to resume school classes, Xi said.Other CPC officials and members in transport, electrical power and telecommunications should make efforts to repair infrastructure, and restore power, water supplies and road transport as soon as possible.He Guoqiang, head of the CPC Central Commission for Discipline Inspection, who was also present at the meeting, underlined disciplinary rules for quake relief work.
