Students from high schools around the country have been working to compete in a national engineering challenge, and it’s all focused around helping people with disabilities. STEM students from 50 high schools across America entered the SourceAmerica Design Challenge, where participants create innovative technology to help people with disabilities in the workplace. That's A Wrap deli in North Potomac, Maryland is known for employing people with disabilities. That's why these STEM students from Poolsville High School picked this place for their school project. The group is one of the five finalist teams for the national engineering competition. Learning all the back-end technology on their own, the students invented an iPad application called "Recipe Easy," which aims to help people with disabilities work more efficiently. The students took all of the recipes from That’s A Wrap and shot videos on how to make the food, before uploading them to the app. Step by step, each recipe is show in an animation and text. It’s also hands-free. "When you hold up a spatula, the camera will detect it and it will move to the next step of a recipe, so Steven has that as a guide for him," says junior Anjali Murthy on the help it provides one of the workers at the deli, Steven.Charissa Garcia with SourceAmerica says the students from the five finalist schools will present their devices on stage for a panel of judges. "They come together. They build a project to really focus on independence, empowerment, increased wages and increased employment opportunities for people with disabilities," Garcia explains of the program. Although these students from Poolsville High School want to take the trophy home, they say they already feel good about making an impact. Science centers, Smithsonian centers, and art museums are shutting down amid the spread of coronavirus. On Thursday evening, the Smithsonian museums, galleries and National Zoo will all close on Saturday indefinitely. The news comes as a hit to the D.C., which was also slated to host the Cherry Blossom Festival later in the month. The Smithsonian issued the following statement:"The health and safety of Smithsonian visitors, staff and volunteers is a top priority. We are closely monitoring the coronavirus situation and maintain ongoing communication with local health officials and the Centers for Disease Controland Prevention. Due to the rapidly changing nature of the situation, we are not announcing a reopening date at this time and will provide updates on a week-to-week basis on our websites. Follow the Smithsonian on Instagram, Facebook and Twitter for immediate updates @smithsonian."The situation is similar in New York, where the Metropolitan Museum of Art is shutting down indefinitely. Here is what The Met had to say:"We will be closing all three locations—The Met Fifth Avenue, The Met Breuer, and The Met Cloisters—temporarily starting tomorrow, March 13, to support New York City’s effort to contain the spread of COVID-19. The Museum will undertake a thorough cleaning and plans to announce next steps early next week. While we don’t have any confirmed cases connected to the Museum, we believe that we must do all that we can to ensure a safe and healthy environment for our community which at this time calls for us to minimize gatherings while maintaining the cleanest environment possible. We look forward to soon announcing when we’ll be able to welcome our staff and visitors back to the Museum.” 1738

Sens. Dianne Feinstein of California, Kelly Loeffler of Georgia and Jim Inhofe of Oklahoma have been informed that the Justice Department has closed investigations into their stock trades. That's according to people familiar with the notifications. The senators came under scrutiny for transactions made in the weeks before the coronavirus sent markets downhill. The developments signaled that federal law enforcement may be narrowing its focus in the stock investigation to North Carolina Sen. Richard Burr. Agents showed up at his Washington-area home two weeks ago with a warrant to search his cellphone. 620

SAN FRANCISCO — Federal and state officials in California were preparing Monday to receive thousands of people from a cruise ship that was idling off the coast of San Francisco with at least 21 people aboard infected with the coronavirus. The ship docked around midday Monday as officials prepared to begin to slowly disembark passengers and crew. The process could take several days. Fences were being installed at an 11-acre site at the Port of Oakland, as authorities readied flights and buses to whisk the more than 2,000 passengers aboard the Grand Princess to military bases or their home countries for a 14-day quarantine. There are more than 3,500 passengers on the ship, who hail from 54 countries. Questions have surrounded the cruise ship since reports surfaced last week that one person had died of COVID-19 aboard the ship. After the cases of the virus were concerned, the ship has attempted to quarantine passengers in their rooms and asked the passengers to practice "social distancing" by standing about six feet away from each other.Princess Cruises also operated the Diamond Princess, a ship that was moored for weeks in February off the coast of Japan after passengers tested positive for the coronavirus. Ultimately, about 700 passengers tested positive for the virus and seven people died. The quarantine practices used on the Diamond Princess have been questioned since passengers disembarked. The U.S. death toll from the virus reached at least 21 and the number of cases worldwide soared above 110,000. 1538
