SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The King family, who launched "Chelsea's Light" after the rape and murder of their daughter Chelsea in 2009, has decided to end the popular "Finish Chelsea's Run" event after eight years.In an interview with 10News from the family's home near Chicago, Chelsea's father, Brent, said they are proud of the impact they have been able to have through "Finish Chelsea's Run," but that it was time to move on from the event."Our family wants to thank everybody that has ever come out to run in our race. It's spectacular. It's beautiful. It brings us a lot of joy. But at the same time, it reminds us how we lost our little girl," King said.Chelsea was a 17-year-old student at Poway High in 2010 when she went for a run at Rancho Bernardo Community Park. A registered sex offender, John Gardner, later pleaded guilty to dragging King into a secluded area near Lake Hodges, raping her, and strangling her to death. He buried the body nearby.Shortly after his arrest, Gardner also admitted to the murder of an Escondido teen, Amber DuBois, who had disappeared a year earlier.The King family began the "Chelsea's Light" Foundation, through which it carried out "Finish Chelsea's Run" and a companion baseball tournament. King says "Chelsea's Light" will continue to exist and raise money. However, he has launched a new nationwide organization called "Protect the Joy."King says he will use the experience he gained helping pass "Chelsea's Law" legislation in several states to protect youth from sex offenders to help build a bigger, stronger organization dedicated to issues of defending children."I've built an organization that mirrors the Sierra Club, or the Surfrider Foundation, or Greenpeace. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The City of San Diego is rolling out the second phase of the polystyrene foam and single-use plastics ordinance as the Memorial Day weekend kicks off. Starting May 24, a ban on the sale and distribution of egg cartons, food service ware and food trays made from polystyrene foam begins. The ban includes bowls, plates, trays, cups, lids and other similar items designed for single-use. According to the city, polystyrene foam doesn’t biodegrade and can be mistaken for food by marine life and other animals. Acceptable alternatives include recyclable plastic, aluminum and recyclable paper products, the city says. Some businesses that make less than 0,000 are exempt until 2020. “The City’s goal is to achieve zero waste by 2040,” said the City’s Environmental Services Department Director, Mario X. Sierra. “This ordinance not only helps in achieving that goal, but also improves water quality, reduces pollution and keeps our environment healthy.” 980

Anyone who believes they have symptoms resembling the novel coronavirus (which are fever, coughing, and shortness of breath) is asked to contact their medical provider, who will help determine if they need to be tested."We have already identified and issued warning letters to companies found selling and promoting fraudulent items, and we expect additional such actions will be forthcoming," the FDA said.Anyone who believes they have found a vendor selling fake testing kits can report them to the FDA. 1570

Dan King told reporters, "I just want to give perspective on what it's like to be a firefighter and to have cancer. Unfortunately, that's me. Two years ago today. I was in the middle of chemotherapy and radiation; pretty extensive treatment. For me, the treatment was very long and very painful."His remarks were during a news conference about a fund-raiser to upgrade the equipment at Firehouse 21 in Pacific Beach Tuesday.Imagine the health risks — every day."Firefighters can experience a lifetime of environmental exposures in a compressed period of time. It may happen at just one fire or, in many cases, chronic exposure over the course of a long career," Firefighter Kurtis Bennett, part of The Cancer Awareness and Prevention Program, said. To fight that the Pacific Beach Town Council wants to raise ,000 to augment city funding.San Diego City Council leader for District 2, Lorie Zapf, told the crowd, "I wish we had more revenue, more money so we could take care of all these equipment needs."Firehouse 21 would benefit directly. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The man suspected of opening fire on U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents at the border Monday has been named.San Diego Police say 23-year-old Travis James Eckstein, a U.S. citizen, was shot and killed during a shootout with CBP officers Monday at the San Ysidro Port of Entry. Eckstein was driving from Mexico into the U.S. and refused to stop for officers. Officers say Eckstein tried to drive through an inspection area, before a vehicle blocked his exit.He then began to fire on officers before he exited his vehicle continued shooting. He said he was driving back home to Chula Vista from Mexico on Monday evening. Moments after he cleared customs, he said he saw a white truck blaze past him. He immediately saw CBP agents throw out spike strips on the ground and the driver of the truck crash into another vehicle. Seconds after two separate shootouts, our viewer saw agents dragging Eckstein onto the sidewalk. Meanwhile, other officers were pointing their guns at the bullet-ridden truck, addressing the passengers. Two male Chinese nationals, ages 18 and 27, were found in the rear of Eckstein's truck and were interviewed and released to CBP officials.First responders attempted life-saving measures on Eckstein, but he did not survive his injuries.Seven CBP officers were involved in the shooting but, miraculously, none were injured.“The CBP officers risked their own lives to protect the public from this gunman,” Pete Flores, Director of Field Operations, said in a release. “Human smuggling is always dangerous. He also had many concussions, his Brain didn’t Think like a Normal Person.”Kniss concluded the post with sorrow.“We weren’t okay with the choices Travis had made.
