ROME, May 21 (Xinhua) -- China's top legislator Wu Bangguo met with Italian President Giorgio Napolitano here on Thursday afternoon, and the two leaders exchanged views on how to address the current global financial crisis.     Wu, chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC), the top Chinese legislature, said China is positive about the results of the London G20 summit and appreciates the efficient efforts that Italy has made in preparation for the dialogue meeting between the leaders of G20 countries and five major developing countries (8+5 dialogue). Italy is ready to strengthen cooperation with China and other developing countries at the 8+5 dialogue.     Napolitano stressed that Italy will join hands with China to firmly oppose trade protectionism and address the international financial crisis.     On China-EU relations, Wu said a strong Europe and a developing China share broad common interest and can contribute to world peace and development. He said China supports the integration process of the European Union, adding that the EU should play an active role in regional and international affairs.     Wu said China places great importance on developing relations with the EU. He expressed the wish to deepen practical cooperation in all fields and expand trade and investment. He said the two sides should carry out dialogues and communication on major issues on the basis of mutual respect of sovereignty and non-interference in each other's internal affairs.     Napolitano said as an important member of the EU, Italy is ready to play a constructive role in the regional bloc and help push for a healthy, stable development of EU-China relations.     Napolitano said China's development will not only benefit the Chinese people, but also contribute to peace and development of the world.     Wu said that China is still a developing country, with its per capita GDP ranking below 100th place in the world. He said China will continue to focus on development by working on economic restructuring and industry upgrading. HONG KONG, July 4 (Xinhua) -- The Bank of China (Hong Kong) Limited (BOCHK), the sole Renminbi (RMB) clearing bank in Hong Kong, announced here Saturday that it will launch RMB clearing services for trade settlement starting from Monday.     BOCHK said it had singed a clearing agreement with the People's Bank of China in relation to RMB business, and will invite banks and other financial institutions participating in trade settlement to sign a new clearing and settlement agreement.     On Wednesday, the People's Bank of China and other departments on the mainland jointly announced the "Administrative Rules on Pilot Program of Renminbi Settlement of Cross-Border Trade Transactions", allowing RMB settlement of cross-border trade transactions for the first time.     "The initiation of the Pilot Program is of particular significance. It will increase the source channels and the usage of RMB funds," said He Guangbei, vice chairman and chief executive of BOCHK.     Under the Pilot Program, enterprises will also have greater flexibility in selecting the settlement currency of cross-border trade transactions as well as increasing their capability to hedge exchange risk, minimize costs, and boost the efficiency and profitability of cross-border trade transactions, he said.     BOCHK, as a participating bank of RMB business, will take the lead in launching a wide spectrum of RMB trade settlement and finance services for its corporate customers to conduct RMB- denominated trade transactions such as remittances, collections and L/C services between Hong Kong and Shanghai, Shenzhen, Guangzhou, Dongguan and Zhuhai, said the vice chairman.

UNITED NATIONS, May 4 (Xinhua) -- China on Monday called on the international community to continue to push forward the nuclear disarmament process.     Cheng Jingye, director-general of arms control and disarmament department of the Chinese foreign ministry, made the appeal here at the third session of the Preparatory Committee for the 2010 Review Conference of the Parties to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons.     Complete prohibition and thorough destruction of nuclear weapons for the establishment of a world free of nuclear weapons is not only the shared aspiration of the international community, but also the goal that China has advocated and worked for over the years, Cheng said.     "China believes that nuclear disarmament should be a fair and reasonable process of gradual reductions towards a downward balance," he said.     Cheng urged nuclear-weapon states to commit themselves unequivocally to complete prohibition and thorough destruction of nuclear weapons, and negotiate and conclude an international legal instrument at an early date.     Pending achievement of the above-mentioned goal, nuclear-weapon states should reduce the role of nuclear weapons in their national security policies, he said. They should undertake unequivocally not to be the first to use nuclear weapons, and conclude an international legal instrument on not to use or threaten to use nuclear weapons against non-nuclear-weapon states or nuclear-weapons-free zones.     As states with largest nuclear arsenals, the United States and Russia bear special and primary responsibilities, he said. They should continue to drastically cut their nuclear arsenals, which is indispensable for advancing the nuclear disarmament process and realizing the ultimate goal of complete and thorough nuclear disarmament.     China welcomes the agreement of the United States and Russia to start negotiations on a new bilateral nuclear disarmament treaty, and hopes that the two countries will further reduce their nuclear arsenals in a verifiable and irreversible manner, Cheng said.

BEIJING, May 15 (Xinhua) -- China has called for the EU to recognize its market economy status soon, said Yao Jian, spokesman for China's Ministry of Commerce (MOC) here Friday.     China's Commerce Minister Chen Deming will attend the 11th China-EU Summit in Prague in the Czech Republic next week, Yao said.     The summit will address China's desire to be recognized as full market economy by the EU soon, the limitation on high-tech exports to China from the EU and bilateral economic cooperation, Yao said.     China need not be recognized by any country in terms of market economy as a concept, but market economy status is a technicality that will help China receive fair treatment in anti-dumping investigations, Yao said.
