SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Hours after Navy officials said all fires aboard the USS Bonhomme Richard were extinguished, smoke was visible coming from the vessel at Naval Base San Diego early Friday morning.Radio scanner traffic obtained by ABC 10News indicated crews at the scene reported at least two fires onboard the ship and called for evacuations at around 1 a.m. Friday. The 10News Breaking News Tracker observed smoke coming from the ship’s front end.At around 5 a.m., a Navy spokesperson confirmed to ABC 10News that no evacuations were ordered and all fires were out. Mike Gilday will be at Naval Base San Diego on Friday to inspect the USS Bonhomme Richard.During a Thursday afternoon press briefing, Rear Adm. Philip Sobeck described the 22-year-old ship as ravaged -- its melted aluminum superstructure bent at a 45-degree angle -- but not dead in the water."The ship can be repaired," he said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Governor Gavin Newsom and the state Attorney General California officials served a cease-and-desist letter to two San Diego strip clubs operating amid the state's stay-at-home order.The letter to the attorneys representing Pacers Showgirls and Cheetahs Gentleman's Club said the state has been informed the locations are operating indoors despite restrictions forcing restaurants to offer only take-out and delivery services under the order.The letter was sent by state Attorney General Xavier Becerra on behalf of Governor Gavin Newsom and the Department of Public Health."We are informed and believe that MIDWAY AND F-12 are continuing to conduct indoor operations notwithstanding the Regional Stay at Home Order currently in effect in the County of San Diego. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — High surf forced the west wall at La Jolla's Children's Pool and Ocean Beach Pier closed Saturday.A high surf advisory was issued for the county's coast from Saturday to Sunday at 4 p.m. Surf is expected to peak Saturday with waves up to 10 feet possible along the county's coastline. Sunday, surf conditions are expected to hold through the day.Beachgoers were warned of strong rip currents and possible beach erosion during the surf event. Lifeguards asked that anyone heading to San Diego's beach hold off on water activities and watch the bluffs until the high surf passes.Because of the surf, San Diego Fire-Rescue lifeguards closed the Ocean Beach Pier on Friday just before 10 a.m. and were expected to keep the pier closed through at least Saturday morning.In La Jolla, lifeguards said the west wall of the Children's Pool was closed to visitors, as waves crashed over the barrier. 916

Six hundred patients have been diagnosed with influenza so far this flu season, according to the San Diego County Health and Human Services (HHS) Agency. The number of cases soared last week, with 139 people diagnosed with the flu. During the same week last year, 57 flu cases were reported. Couple that with Democrats flipping the County Board of Supervisors after years of Republican control, and it appears a whole new philosophy is on the way."I've been waiting 20 years,” said Nicole Capretz, who heads the Climate Action Campaign. “This is, I mean, decades in the making.”Climate Action Campaign has fought the Republican-controlled Board of Supervisors for years over how it handles the environment, prevailing in court over the county's climate plan.“They've twice had to rescind their climate plan publicly, which is unprecedented,” Capretz said.Capretz said she expects things to change in January, when the board will flip to a 3-2 Democrat advantage. That is expected to shift how the county addresses key issues like the environment, public health, and housing - in other words, no more sprawling back country developments that many times wind up challenged in a public vote.“We have wasted so much energy and so much time debating things that were not legally valid and should not have been done,” said County Supervisor Nathan Fletcher.Meanwhile, over at City hall, the Democrats will expand their veto proof advantage on the city council from 6-3 to 8-1.
