EL CAJON (CNS) - A Santee man accused of in the death of his infant daughter pleaded not guilty today to charges of murder and child abuse. Daniel Charles Marshall, 34, was arrested and charged last week in connection with the April 25 death of 7-month-old Hailey Marshall.Paramedics responding to a medical emergency call in the 8600 block of Paseo Del Rey in Santee on April 22 found the child in medical distress, Lt. Thomas Seiver said. She was pronounced dead at a hospital three days later of injuries that included skull fractures, prosecutors said.The circumstances of the death ``warranted further investigation, resulting in the (sheriff's) child abuse unit responding,'' according toSeiver. ``As the investigation progressed, the homicide unit responded and assumed responsibility of the investigation.'' DOWNTOWN (CNS) - Authorities shut down lanes of Interstate 5 in Downtown San Diego as firefighters battled a small fire that broke out in palm trees near San Diego City College's campus, just west of the freeway Saturday afternoon.The fire was first reported at 3:44 p.m., according to a California Highway Patrol incident log.The CHP closed the right two lanes of southbound I-5, leaving only the left two lanes open. Ramps onto I-5 were also closed in the area, including the ramps from C Street and Pershing Drive to southbound I-5, according to San Diego police Officer Robert Heims. Firefighters had the fire knocked down by about 4 p.m., according to the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department.Lanes on I-5 were going to be closed for at least an hour while firefighters worked to clean up the fire, the CHP log said. 825

EL CAJON (KGTV) -- Investigators are gathering clues to determine what caused a deadly single-car crash along a major roadway in El Cajon early Friday morning.The crash was reported at around 2:20 a.m. Friday by witnesses traveling to nearby pharmacy on Fletcher Parkway near Navajo Road. The witnesses, a woman and her young daughter, called 9-1-1 after discovering a wrecked white SUV fully engulfed in flames. According to El Cajon Police, the driver was heading westbound on Fletcher Parkway when they stuck a tree. The SUV immediately caught fire.The woman and other good Samaritans tried to pull the driver out of the burning vehicle.Crews arrived and also tried to rescue the trapped motorist but the victim died in the blaze.No information about the victim has been released at this time.Both directions of Fletcher Parkway near Navajo Road were closed as of 6 a.m. while officials continue their investigation. 928

(KGTV) — One man suffered severe injuries after he was hit by a vehicle in El Cajon on Saturday.El Cajon Police said the collision occurred at Jamacha Rd. and Sunnyland Ave. just before 6:30 p.m. It wasn't immediately clear how the man was struck by the vehicle.The man suffered head trauma and a severed foot, according to police. He was found unconscious when police arrived before he was taken to a nearby hospital. His condition was not immediately known.The driver remained at the scene. ECPD said drugs or alcohol do not appear to be a factor.Traffic on Jamacha Rd., from Lexington to Washington, will be closed for at least two hours while police investigate. 691

Loved Halloween and candy," said Jean Bilbrey.As with so many other families, Halloween night for the Bilbrey's three children - ages 11,9 and 4 - was a blur of costumes, front doors and a steady flow of treats. Their family started around Falmouth Drive and Virgina Court and walked for several hours, stopping by 30 to 50 homes. In all, they filled about six buckets' worth. This past weekend, the kids went about the task of sorting the candy."My middle daughter, who is nine, said 'Mom, Mom, I found something in my candy' and brought me a ring," said Bilbrey.It was a woman's ring, possibly a precious one. "Looks like a wedding band similar to mine. Possibly an anniversary band ... somebody wears on a hand that means something to somebody ... my first thought was we need to get this back to the owner. As a woman, my jewelry, I don't have much but what I do have is very important to me," said Bilbrey.The piece of jewelry likely slipped off while someone was handing out candy. Like any good mystery, there are a few clues, including the candy found next to the ring. "Candy corn and the Sour Patch candies. That's what she had in her hand was the candy corn," said Bilbrey.Bilbrey spread word of the ring on social media, but so far, she's come up empty."I'll keep it safe. I've got it here.
