SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Confirmed flu cases in San Diego County are well behind the rate of confirmed cases during last year's flu season, according to county health officials.The county has confirmed 189 flu cases so far this flu season compared to 441 cases at this time last year. According to county public health officer Wilma Wooten, flu cases usually increase during the holidays due to increased traveling and large family gatherings."Holiday gatherings and celebrations bring people together in large groups raising the possibility of people getting sick and making others ill," Wooten said. "Get a flu shot before the flu starts to spread and so that you are protected during the holidays."The county's weekly influenza report found 33 lab-confirmed flu cases for the week of Nov. 4-10. Only one county resident has died due to flu complications this season, compared to three at this time last flu season. Flu complications killed 342 people in San Diego County last season, the highest total since the county began tracking flu deaths roughly 20 years ago.The county and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommend that everyone 6 months or older get vaccinated against the flu each year. It is especially important for those at risk of serious complications, such as pregnant women and people with chronic medical conditions, to get the vaccine. Residents should also wash their hands regularly, stay away from sick people and clean surfaces that are touched often.The flu vaccine is available at doctors' offices, local retail pharmacies, community clinics and the county's public health center. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Multiple local and nonprofit organizations around San Diego County will host Christmas meals Tuesday for underserved and low-income residents.Salvation Army San Diego will host its 35th annual Christmas meal, beginning at 11 a.m. at Golden Hall at 202 C St. The organization expects hundreds of volunteers to assist with the event. Volunteers will escort attendees to their seats and serve them a traditional holiday meal.Serving Seniors will also host its annual Christmas meal for low- income and homeless San Diego County seniors, many of whom would otherwise spend the holiday alone. About 350 seniors will enjoy a meal of Cornish hen with Mornay sauce, cornbread dressing, whipped potatoes, green peas and carrot cake, according to the organization. The meal begins at 11 a.m. at 1525 Fourth Ave.Rev. Shane Harris, former president of the National Action Network, will host his second annual community Christmas breakfast at the National Black Contractors Association. Attendees will receive a free hot breakfast, free clothes and children will receive free gifts.The event begins at 7 a.m. at 6125 Imperial Ave. According to Harris, the breakfast is open to the public, but foster families, low-income residents, homeless residents and military veterans are all encouraged to attend. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - County Supervisor Nathan Fletcher and Mayor Kevin L. Faulconer, along with other regional leaders, Monday urged the Board of Supervisors to approve as part of its budget .4 million to fund behavioral health at new permanent supportive housing projects.The group -- which also included San Diego City Councilman Chris Ward, chair of the Regional Task Force on the Homeless (RTFH), and San Diego Housing Commission (SDHC) Executive Vice President Jeff Davis -- unveiled a strategy to provide intensive behavioral health and care coordination services on-site to support up to 400 new units at upcoming hotel housing projects.The board is scheduled to meet Tuesday to have a final discussion and vote on its .4 billion fiscal year 2020-21 budget.Starting in April, the city and county of San Diego teamed up with the RTFH and the housing commission to provide shelter and services to nearly 1,200 people experiencing homelessness with Operation Shelter to Home at the San Diego Convention Center. The county's Health and Human Services Agency has provided on-site behavioral health and care coordination services at the operation, expanding on the services provided at the city's bridge shelters.Now, the organizations are working to replicate and build on the same coordinated care model outside the shelter setting.According to the group, these types of services are critical to stabilizing individuals so that they can stay in permanent housing. In a survey conducted by the SDHC of clients at Operation Shelter to Home, nearly 70% of clients required permanent supportive housing level of services or higher for success."The county can tackle the debilitating cycle of homelessness by making behavioral health and care coordination services more readily available," Fletcher said. "Redirecting .4 million toward mental health and substance misuse treatment is a better way to use the funds, reduce the reliance on a broken crisis-care model, and ensure people's needs are being met. The commission activates its Inclement Weather Shelter Program when temperatures drop below 50 degrees and the chance of rain is higher than 40%, the temperature falls below 45 degrees regardless of the chance of rain or sustained high winds are predicted. The program is funded through a partnership between the commission, the city of San Diego, Father Joe's and Connections Housing. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - According to a report released Thursday by the San Diego Association of Governments, drug use reached a 20-year high among men and women arrested and booked into San Diego County detention facilities in 2019.Nearly four in five male arrestees (79%) and 82% of female arrestees tested positive for at least one of the following drugs: marijuana, methamphetamines, opiates, cocaine, and PCP, according to the report by SANDAG's Criminal Justice Research Division.The lowest rates in the past 20 years for arrestees testing positive were in 2009 for men (56%) and 2008 for women (58%).Meth showed up the most in the survey results in 2019, with 66% of women and 55% of men testing positive for the drug. Those rates were also 20-year highs and were up 4% among women compared to 2018. The rate among men remained unchanged from 2018 to 2019.On average, meth-using arrestees in 2019 reported using the drug for about 15 years, using before their 22nd birthday, and using more than 19 days ina row over the last 30 days.The surveys also found that 36% of arrestees tested positive for multiple drugs, 65% reported ever being homeless, and 83% reported being arrested at least one other time in the past. According to the report, when arrestees tested positive for multiple drugs, it was most often meth and marijuana. Of those who tested positive for multiple drugs, 59% were white, 79% had been homeless in the past, and 44% had been diagnosed with a mental illness."While the population of individuals booked into our facilities has changed over time, these statistics are sobering, and indicate the continued need to address underlying risks and the need to stop the revolving door of incarceration," said Cynthia Burke, SANDAG's director of research and program management.Slightly over a quarter of arrestees reported that they thought a drug they had used contained fentanyl, given the effects they experienced.
